Valarr VIII: The Bear There Was, A Bear, A Bear!
The weeks slipped past as you fell into a motion of repeating motions. You spied, you gathered information and sought to use the knowledge to gain the edge that you would need for the future, and keep yourself, and all your allies safe from any many who may threaten you.
It was easy, meeting, and talking and listening. Everyone wanted to talk and be heard. To have their egos inflated.
But it was on the round, that you were confronted, and met… by a man, you did not expect to meet in your home.
The man was large, a beast od a man with a well kept beard. Brown hair was hading behind his balding head, and the sigil of an enemy house was worn on his chest.
The Bear on a Greenfield, House Mormont. Bannermen of House Stark.
He was sitting at the table, a drink in hand, his gaze on you, and Ser Warrek.
"Hmm, FInally, I was hoping to finally meet you, King Viserys." he stated.
You scowled at Warrek. "Is there any reason you didn't kill him?" You asked.
Warrek nodded. "Said he had a missive for you, your grace. A Message from Lord Stark."
You frowned. "I come unarmed to you, and set myself at your table, and your mercy." The knight replied. His voice was old but full of a lifetime of wisdom. "And wearing the colors of my house. I have not hidden anything from you."
You sat down across from the man and poured a glass of ale. "Who are you?" you asked.
"Jorah… Mormont." He stated quietly, his gaze going first to Warrek than you. "And I know who you are King Viserys, for you must be mad."
"Mad?" you asked. "No one's found me yet, not until you." Steel was shown as Warrek partially drew his blade.
"Indeed, because after all, who would put together a picture that Valarr Vaeltigar would be Viserys Targaryen." He stated. "I took you for brave boy, not stupid. Braving Valyria and returning with Valyrian Steel? Only a mad dragon would attempt such a task."
"And how did you place those two names together?" You asked. "And question my bravery in turn."
"Simple really. I picked a trail that would at least lead me to a man who might know where he might be. After all, the Spider's entire network seemed to vanish overnight." He stated. "And those same trails led me to you."
"And the name?" You asked.
That made Jorah sighed. "Your sister. She sang like the late Prince Rhaegar." The mention of your brother made you clench your fist. "She has a beautiful voice."
"What is your purpose here, Ser Jorah, besides a potentially walking to your own death?" You asked.
The bear knight sighed, shrugging his shoulders and drinking ale. He drank the entire cup. "A Message from Lord Eddard Stark."
"And why would I care for the friend of the Usurper?" You asked.
"Because Robert Baratheon murdered an entire island, for their rebellion." He stated.
You had heard of the scourging of Pyke, and the aftermath of the great massacre that had occurred. An entire island that had been made destroyed, the ashes of the land choking whatever lived there.
A place of death and devastation. A place where the Userper had marked his rule in blood and iron. A place where his fists were clenched at the balls of the Seven Kingdoms.
"And why should the Honorable Eddard Stark wish to betray his friend?" You asked. "Has he not gained much in his treason?
"My Lord's thoughts on the matter are his own." He replied. "But I believe he is afraid. Afraid for the realm, and the North and the poison that has been whispered into his ears by his Lannister wife."
You were lucky that Ser Jaime was not among the men listening to this, else he may have struck the man for such insolence, and slander against his house and his sister.
But the wife of the king was… someone you had been keeping tabs on. She was crafty, and dare you to say… brilliant. In a way you despised.
"And his message?"
"He wants to meet with you. To discuss your… plans for the future." He stated, handing over a letter, signed and sealed by the Stark Lord's hands. "If you meet him."
"Why should I trust Lord Stark. His honor, unquestionable as it may be for most me, is not unquestionable to me." You asked.
"He is willing to risk his life with you, personally." Ser Jorah replied. "Of that, I am certain."
He poured himself another cup of ale.
