Saturday's Eclipse, 15:25
"How do I beat this thing?" She almost begged. Too much power, too much to comprehend, just… too much. Samael, if that was its name, was something that made her want to run screaming - she'd gotten insight into its nature, oh yes, insight enough that her instincts were telling her to run away.
Honestly? I don't know if you can, but if you can distract it then that should be enough to save more people. Use your beams, augment them with the crippling charm and your desire to stop it from hurting people. With that, even if you can't hurt it, you should be able to distract it. Only fight it as much as you have to to keep its attention, otherwise focus on running and dodging - and don't stay still, that's dangerous. We can look for ways to get rid of it once everyone is safe.
While he was talking, she looked over to Miki and Su. They were starting to calm down, but that didn't mean much. If she was going to start jumping all over the place… no, even if she didn't do that, keeping them here was stupid and irresponsible. They wouldn't want to leave, she wouldn't have in their place, but that just meant she'd need to convince them.
"Got it," she acknowledged. "Just one thing, before I start. Miki, Su…" She held both of them close, realising to her horror that she was trembling. "Go find Mom, okay? Keep an eye on her, make sure she doesn't come here. I don't know how you'd stop her, but whatever it takes… just keep her safe, please." And yourself.
"Amu!" Su stared at her, looking horrified. "You can't really be thinking of fighting that thing? Look at it, it's a monster!"
"I think she has to." Miki smiled bitterly, glancing at the ongoing slaughter for a second before looking away. "Just be careful, okay? Su, come on, let's not distract her."
Both of them flew away, heading back the direction she came from. She looked at the battle, and the miniature forest surrounding it, mentally judging how quickly she could get around. Jumping down to the ground would be useless, all that would accomplish was putting other people between her and Samael. That tree over there… and then one of the two to its left, and then…
"I'm going to distract it, maybe hurt it a bit if we're lucky," she shouted to the soldiers below her. "Please, try to get people out in the meantime."
Was it her imagination, or was Samael paying more attention to her than before?
Without hesitating further or listening for a response, she jumped off towards the next tree in her plan. She launched her attack while still in mid-air, a beam of energy that smashed into its side from multiple angles as she flew, her hands somehow compensating for both her own free-falling parabola and Samael's apparently random movements to keep the beam focused on a single spot while still avoiding the flying demons swarming him.
As she was landing, touching down with both feet and a single hand to stabilise herself, he spread his wings in an upright position and once again screeched. She tensed, wary of a new attack, but nothing seemed to happen. The soldiers were still trapping a lot of people, refusing to let them out -
"What are you doing?" She shouted. "Get them out of there while I'm distracting Samael!" She punctuated her shout with a second blast, which seemed to bend when it neared him but still punched through to hit him in the face. This time she thought there was a note of pain in the scream, but she had no time to judge the effect because a moment afterwards a lightning bolt flashed past her, and she found she had somehow sidestepped just barely enough that it'd miss her. A moment later she deliberately sidestepped a second, more powerful one, and she realised that if she jumped off to a different tree she'd be a sitting duck as long as she stayed in mid-air.
At least it was focused on her, now. It seemed she could use some of her essence to perfectly dodge its attacks, but she didn't have an infinite supply. So long as she was careful, she could dodge the normal way, without burning essence. This was as close to perfect as she could hope for, and yet they still weren't letting people out. Why would - Lightning bolt! And another!
She almost danced around the upper branches of the now smouldering tree, twice hopping off a branch just moments before Samael pulverised it with his lightning. If the consequences of getting hit hadn't been so deadly brutal, it might almost have been fun. In a spare moment she noticed they were letting people out now, but slowly. She hoped she could keep this up.
That's when things went to hell, metaphorically speaking. Samael stopped his rapid-fire attacks, eyeing her with what she'd swear was amusement, and as she paused in her dodging to wonder if she should send another beam his way, he turned to her left, spread his wings and… flapped. Just once, but that single flap produced hurricane-force winds that sent everyone on that side of the fight flying - soldiers, civilians, parts of civilians (and she hoped there was a charm to erase memories) - everyone.
She hit him again, pouring everything she had into the blast. Then again, and again, and again. The first sent him reeling, the second cut off a wing, and by the time the fourth hit parts of him were wavering, fading in and out of existence.
For a moment a multi-layered golden sphere surrounded her, each layer incomplete on its own, each layer shifting and interlocking with the others and the whole assembly giving off an impression of great solidity despite the fragility of its parts. It should have been opaque, but somehow she could easily see through it, to where Samael was rising despite his injuries. She could see through him, too. He was… what was he doing?
She almost fell to her knees, her vision blurring until she forced herself to focus. Her thoughts had a fragile, crystalline quality to them, almost like she'd stayed up far too long. Samael was… looking at her, but otherwise doing nothing.
The people she'd been trying to save were getting to their feet, the civilians running in every possible direction except back towards Samael.
She stared at him as he faded into nothingness.

A/N: The next snippet is an interlude from Su's perspective, then we'll get back to Amu for some more questing. Meanwhile, feel free to decide on a course of action if you'd like Amu to be proactive in any way, otherwise Su's interlude will end with events happening to Amu rather than the other way around.
