Evermark Underground: RPG Brothel Management

I'm very much torn between [] Plan Obdurate Ossicone and [] Plan Consolidate and Mitigate

I think starting in on the big House Galero favors is something that needs to happen sooner rather than later, and starting a relationship with the Merchant's Guild is a solid step, too.
But Clean Æther does remain a bottleneck, so hiring on more escorts makes a good deal of sense.
So I'm unsure which Control and Intrigue actions are the best.

Unfortunately we have a huge bottleneck with our Intrigue options. I actually meant to ask about that. @Evenstar would it be possible for us to start grooming a lieutenant to delegate matters relating to the Redcaps, our territory, and so on to? Our Intrigue action economy is getting really inefficient since it's our only way to spend large sums of dirty cash AND our only way to interface with the Redcaps.

I'll put a Personal action in for it in the next update.

Yeah, escorts are dirty money. They're still increased income, though.

FWIW I do want to get that merchant guild membership but it's just not as high on my personal priority list as the second location. Too many options, not enough clean income...

Yeah - the favor economy helps but honestly it's always a strain to get an option that lets us actually leverage that effectively and it tends to devour actions quite a bit...

Doh, escorts would be Dirty Æther.
I've slid back over to wanting a little more space to operate the Dirty Æther than spending it all on the 5 House Galero favors would allow. Despite being really eager to start getting those favors, I'll go with

[X] Plan Consolidate and Mitigate

Ivy 1903
"Holly and Edie, just checking in; you've hired on all the staff we needed?"

Holly nods. "All five new escorts are ready to work."

Edie smiles. "And the receptionist is installed at the front desk."

"Glad to hear it."

As you walk the floor of the Dojo, you listen to the barks and calls of a half-dozen professional mercenaries and martial artists instructing your Redcaps, new and old. All twenty-seven of them wear your colors; the black uniform with the pink rosette covering the shoulder and the red cap on the head.

You go without a cap, stalking the rows in black pants, a vest and a dress shirt - but everyone looks to you, everyone defers to you. Even the hardened mercenaries look to you for answers when they falter, though they have far more combat experience than you.

On one of the pillars that supports the hall, someone has cut a symbol into the wood. A gear containing a fist.

"So," you say to Varielle, "there are a number of strategies we could pursue with regards to the Innumerable Aspect recruiting drive. I'm frankly unsure whether it's a good idea; we could try to throw our weight around to cancel or delay it, or get other causes involved to both slow it down and buoy it up. We could contribute cash, hands or a safe place to gather. There's a lot of options."

"But you have a plan, right?"

"I think our best option is to…"

[ ] Throw our weight around and try to cancel or delay the campaign. It risks too many people's lives when there are less dangerous options.
[ ] Get the other causes involved with the recruitment drive. They can't arrest all of us if we all make a stand together, right?
[ ] Contribute a major donation to the cause, say 500 Dirty Æther. The more money they have the more and better placed those leaflets will be.
[ ] Contribute hands to the cause, like the Redcaps. They ought to be able to distribute leaflets pretty far and wide, right?
[ ] Contribute a safehouse and meeting ground to the cause, letting them organize at Hotel Variety.
[ ] Do nothing. On second thought, this whole exercise is more trouble than it's worth.

After talking to a half-dozen different people about the iron gear charms, you finally trace their origin back to a small independent jeweller's in the city.

You knock on the door and wait; when he answers, you hold up the charm.

He blinks. "You'd best come in."

You step inside, and are greeted by a small forge and workshop.

"How did you come by that?", he asks.

"I could ask you the same thing. What do you know of the Steamborne faith?"

"The what?"

"You might call it something different. The religion represented by this token."

He looks at you like you've grown an extra head. "The what? Surely you mean the cause?"

You blink. "What cause would that be?"

"... have you ever heard of the Progressivists' Guild?"

"Huh."

"I take it you have. But you're still surprised. Is there… some joke I'm missing?"

"Well," you say. "Your charms have come to mean something very different…"

The apothecary's collection of animal skulls has some new specimens today. You examine a crow skull as you wait for her to arrive, looking at the curves and whorls of the bone.

"Your order is ready!", calls the apothecary.

You sit down, and go through the cases.

[ ] 10 Blackroot Coffee for 100 Dirty Æther
[ ] 5 Blackroot Tea for 50 Dirty Æther
[ ] 5 Fine Spices for 100 Dirty Æther
[ ] 10 Ostmark Tea for 100 Dirty Æther

"Everything seems to be as ordered. My people will come round in a few hours."

"Happy to help, dearie."

Clean Income has seemed to be a priority, so there's no real reason not to buy all the spices. I think that offering hands who can help in the event of a crisis, and keeping the redcaps up to standard is very important, and following along with quest lines is always good~
Also, we really should actually buy the Galero house favor sooner rather then later, though didn't include that to do the most I can for getting the redcaps up to spec for this mission.

OK, this is a big decision. But first, @Evenstar didn't we already do this? It was in the plan.
[ ][Intrigue] Hire additional trainers to get the former Rats up to speed with your Redcaps. -20 Dirty Aether/Month.
Or is it just doubling down on the extra training?

So my thoughts: First, just a couple turns back we voted to stay quiet and not Class Change to Magical Girl, then we voted to Class Up to Kalinsha which is a sort of teacher/guide rather than a revolutionary. We're definitely in the "slow and steady" camp. I'd like to delay, not cancel, the campaign. I mean, hell, they're all fired up (pun intended) by Steamborne, but we're still working on what it even means. We don't even have a real working set of rites or tenets or anything. Maybe see if we can get them to delay until Steamborne is more established, and meanwhile reach out to the other groups?

The apothecary is obvious, all of those things are extremely efficient ways of turning dirty aether clean again, mostly either 2 dirty to 1 clean or 1:1. We have 2000 dirty aether to play with, I literally don't think we can even spend it all this turn. Might as well get it all.

Control, Charm, and Lore are mainly Clean Aether conservation, as well as outreach. I don't remember if we've ever gone to the Suffragists personally, and even if we did it's been a while. Meanwhile, it's probably good to check in with the Ceverra now that we're a genuine Kalinsha; new doors might be open to us. Also, the Progressivists might know more about the coopted Steamborne symbol if it was theirs originally?

Intrigue is moving towards getting rid of this giant pile of dirty money and towards being introduced at court. We still need to get court finery, but this is a big step in the direction of getting that goal met. We'll still need favors, but we're making 2 favors worth of dirty money every turn, so that will probably take less time than getting finery.

Faith is more following the breadcrumb trail.

Finally, the Personal choice is a necessity IMO. As we move into a more overt territory control position, we're going to need to have someone that can handle that for us so that Filia has time to do our actual intriguing.

I like [] Plan The Revolution Will be Televised ... Eventually,
but I'm thinking Control should be the Merchant's Guild, since that requires an investment before any benefits start kicking in, and Hotel Variety is in desperate need of investment opportunities for all its dirty, Dirty Æther.

Evenstar, could M. Estellé make this transaction with the Apothecary an automatic transaction to save on the Personal Action? Like Blackroot Tea and Fine Spices every 5 months, and Blackroot Coffee and Ostmark Tea every 10 months? Maybe even get a discount since the Apothecary gains a reliable income stream?

I'll add an action to make a longer-term deal now that we're a repeat customer.

We actually have plenty of investment opportunities for dirty cash. We still need 10 house Galerro favors just to get introduced to Court (5 if we buy 5 now); who knows what use we'll have for more later, but I'm sure there will be some. We can turn dirty cash into cheap construction via Libertine favors, and if I have my druthers, we'll have plenty of use for that soon (by purchasing the empty lot and building a new business there). Arming our crew costs dirty money, and we'll have more and more need for that as our movement grows—both because we'll have more people to arm, and also because we're more likely to get into fights. Succubus artifacts and potions both spend illicit cash, and for the latter, I'm sure we'll be thankful for every single one we have eventually. Finally, the Progressivist Jeweller, Apothecary, and Corrupt Port Authority all are relief valves for our massive prostitution income; the latter in particular had like 800 or 1000 aether worth of goods last time.

Again, I do want to get that Merchant Guild membership, but I really want us to preserve our clean aether until we can afford the vacant lot. Building up a second business should skyrocket our clean aether income, which will make a whole lot of things a whole lot easier for us.

It was said in the last update, and I agree, that we're not in charge of when people want to risk their lives and livelihoods for the cause. However, this leaflet campaign seems like it will draw a lot of heat to the city, not just the Innumerable Aspect people, for relatively small gains. Orbites are a pillar of social control used not only by the state religion, but the noble houses that inscribe them. The authorities will crack down hard on them for this, and any other movement/illegal activity they find in the process. Going to the Innumerable Aspect's monthly meeting should help convince them to at least delay the leaflet campaign long enough for the other causes to prepare for the inevitable crackdown. They can still go through with it, and probably should, but the other causes need to be warned that the authorities will be paying closer attention to subversive activities.

Speaking of the crackdown on illegal activities, outfitting our Redcaps with the rifles and some pistols should help them when they clash with the Mob, along with projecting strength for the Sharks to respect. Going on active patrols next month, along with talking to the Sharks again after that, should be enough to unify the harbor underworld factions against the mob (and potentially the status quo as well). Finding a second-in-command among their ranks should also help keep things running smoothly.

Obviously we'll be buying all the various teas and spices. And searching for contacts among the Ceverra should be much more rewarding now that we've classed up to Kalinsha. The Merchants guild is apparently full of revolutionary sentiment, we should check for ourselves to see how much so, and why. If they merely want to tear down the Noble houses to build their own, they are probably not going to be our long-term allies.

We should also pursue where the connection between the progessivist symbol and the Steamborne faith came from. While we can't fully control how the Steamborne Faith spreads, we should make sure that it doesn't turn into something unpleasant due to influential bad actors.

I didn't express myself well here. I mean we need investment opportunities that will let us change Dirty Æther into Clean Æther. It isn't clear that building more rooms via favors is going to generate more Clean Æther. The laundry and spices + teas are each earning as much as the Hotelry. The band and VIP room are out-earning all of them. If we want to get more Clean Æther from our Dirty Æther, we need to get some silk on the sly and upgrade some more VIP rooms. Or open up a magic shop and try to source all the ingredients from underworld sources.

New thought, Evenstar: Can we use Dirty Æther to invest in a Smuggler's Bay Run? Find us a Han Solo and pay for a load of... spice? to get transported somewhere. Or high value luxury goods, but dodge tariffs / customs? That doesn't get us Dirty -> Clean Æther, but it can maybe be a source of Dirty income, as well as an inroad to building trusted transportation for the revolution.

If you're interested in this I'd recommend looking for more waterfront contacts.

Can we please, please avoid spending Clean Aether for just a couple more turns? We need literally one turn of saving to afford the vacant lot. Once we have that, we can work on getting another genuine money-making business up, like the magic shop that I know people want. It's a good idea, just not combined with the hotel.

I wrote my plan that way for exactly this reason.
