Edge of the Inner Sphere (A BattleTech Quest)

Say how many people live in this world and the attitude of our people?

Is this world where New Hendos is predominant, do they hate anything Terran, do they long for a society free of technology, etc?

Honestly reworking the deal might be a good way to get the funding and maybe the technical expertise and material to upgrade the plant...and maybe get my shad variant in production to boot.

-[X] Renegotiate the Deal
Terminate the clause it would be costly and a bad roll would decrease our economy by 1 while tear up the contract would decrease our standing with LC and if they feel vindictive they could send a mercenary team to raid our only planet. Renegotiate the deal is the safest of the option and have a small chance to even increase our economy.

-[X] Focus on Infrastructure
Infrastructure may not look like but is extremely important and would be embarrassing to have a ton of factories but no road or spaceport to handle all the cargo, goes unsaid that would hurt the economy too.

I don't think we actually need to hire mercenaries for now, we are too small of a world to attract any significant attention and I think our military can handle small pirate incursions.

We need the Mercs since a bunch of our military were political appointments who either retired or were retired during the changeover to the new government, so we're weaker than we are normally right now.

Say @Fullyautomagic once the situation stabilizes, can we send expeditions in the deep periphery to search for Lostech left behind by the Star League or the Rim Worlds Republic?

If we get lucky we can even find the Camelot Command.

Anyway since this little world of ours was establish by people from Terra is downright possible there's some vault of Lostech somewhere.

Jessica sucked in a breath as the Médaillon breached atmosphere, doing her best to ignore the sound of hypercompressed air particles screaming past the hull.

Instead, she tried to focus on the fact that she'd soon be back on solid ground. After spending several months cooped up in some ramshackle JumpShip on the periphery, she was excited to finally be able to stretch her legs. Especially without having to worry about knocking some vital component loose.

She grunted at the sudden activation of the Médaillon's landing thrusters, glaring in the bridge's direction as the vessel began its final descent. Fortunately, touchdown at Landung's spaceport was much gentler their descent into the atmosphere.

A light near the ceiling flickered off, and she immediately unbuckled herself from her crash couch. With an exhale of relief, she marched out into the hallway and made for the catwalk leading into the mechbay. She paused about halfway through as she heard a voice shout her name from behind.

"Jessica! You ready to get back on the saddle?" Marika grinned, leaning against the railing as she stared over at her Griffin.

Jessica glanced over at her own Awesome and smiled softly, "I'm happy just to be back on solid ground. Hopefully this'll be a quiet job though, we just managed to fix up the PPCs on ol' Bessie. Don't wanna get 'em blasted off again too soon."

Marika chuckled and rolled her eyes, "Have they told you where we're gonna be deployed yet?"

Jessica nodded, "We're going to serve as a rapid reaction first, that means sleeping on the ship and not straying too far from the spaceport."

Marika groaned, "How about those Finsterwaldians? Finsterwalders? Whatever, any idea where they're being deployed?"

Jessica frowned for a moment, and thought back to the briefing she'd received upon accepting the contract. "They're going to be stationed in-"

Tobias Whitmore had grown up on New Avalon, and earned enough money as a hydroelectric engineer to purchase himself a very comfortable retirement out in the periphery. However, he had never been comfortable just sitting around and doing nothing. When the call went out for experts to work on a new infrastructure project, he leapt at the opportunity.

Soon enough he'd drafted up a set of designs for a network of dams strategically placed along the length of the Rio Blanco River. Construction had already begun for one of the dams, and he was now tasked with deciding where the newly-built power source should distribute its energy.

[ ] Oasis
- Oasis' population had exploded in recent years, with the legalization of gambling and several other activities being a major factor in that. However, these newly built casinos and stadiums were now requesting an increased allotment of electricity. Many in parliament supported the move, as it could lead to increased funding in the form of taxes, though others opposed government support of such institutions on ethical grounds.

[ ] Rockton
- Under the old government, Rockton had faced the issues of rolling blackouts and public spending being used on oligarch-owned businessed rather than to support its population. Even now much of the energy provided to it was funneled straight into the industrial district, including Stone Hearth Industries. Other than the appreciation of the population, there likely wouldn't be too many benefits from directing a bit more power towards Rocktion.

[ ] Landung
- Analysts at the Westforge Industries Research Center in Landung had put forward a request for more power. Apparently they'd come up with a theory that by overclocking certain components they could increase production by as much as a sixth! However, it was equally likely that there'd be no real effect other than a bit more strain on some components.

Now that things were finally getting back under control, those in the Office of Foreign Affairs felt it was finally time to reach out to the rest of the Periphery and Inner Sphere to reestablish diplomatic ties. There was a heavy emphasis on reaching out to the Periphery, though some did feel that establishing ties with the Lyran Commonwealth would be a good idea if business was to be done with them regardless.

(Select Three)

[ ] The Lyran Commonwealth
- The Lyran Commonwealth stands as one of the most powerful Successor States in the Inner Sphere, and though relations may be cold with them, you are at the very least doing business with them. It was because of these already-existing ties that the recommendation was made for an embassy to be established on Althastan. Perhaps they could be convinced in the future to assist in modernizing your Shadow Hawk production facilities?

[ ] The Free Worlds League
- Though further from your borders, the Free Worlds League was no less a Successor State than the Lyran Commonwealth. Many in parliament were more positively inclined towards establishing ties with them, as many worlds within the Free Worlds League shared a similar method of governance as yours.

[ ] The Circinus Federation
- As a pirate kingdom, the Circinus Federation wasn't known for having warm relations with its periphery neighbors. Many in parliament saw reach out to them as a lost cause, and at best as merely negotiating with pirates for the chance to not be raided by them.

[ ] The Illyrian Palatinate
- Though they are a rather minor periphery power, they are opposed to the interests of the Circinus Federation. Perhaps some sort of defensive pact could be signed with them to defend one another from the pirate kingdom?

[ ] The Lothian League
- Quite similar to the Illyrian Palatinate, though they hold a few more worlds within their borders.

[ ] The Marian Hegemony
- The Marian Hegemony is the largest of the periphery powers in your stretch of the universe. They are an expansionist and militaristic state, and one which sees no issues with enslaving any world that it manages to snatch with its iron fist. They are easier to negotiate with than the Circinus Federation, but one should not let that fool them into think they are any less brutal.

[ ] New St. Andrews
- A single world, surrounded on all sides by pirates and hostile powers. With a pitiful population and industrial base, many in parliament scoffed at the idea of reaching out to them. However, they do hold one similarity with you. They produce Vedette Medium Tanks, though they limited to equipping theirs with primitive weaponry like Heavy Rifles. Perhaps you could sign an agreement where you transfer technology to them in exchange for favorable trade terms?

[ ] Kahakai Kuna
- Outside of the Lyran Commonwealth, Kahakai Kuna has been one of your most reliable trading partners. Over the years they have sent shipments of luxury goods like silk, chocolate, and even some consumer electronics. In exchange you have often sent Shadow Hawks and Vedettes, perhaps you could deepen these ties by offering to station some of your military on their planet as a defensive force? This alliance could be expanded to federalization in the future.

[ ] Odpoczynek
- You do not know much about Odpoczynek, only that they purchase bulk quantities of infantry equipment and combat vehicles from manufacturers in the Free Worlds League. Trying to displace the Free Worlds League as a supplier could be quite the lucrative proposition.

[ ] Yakusoku
- Founded by refugees from the Draconis Combine, Yakusoku is a peaceful world that mainly exports grain and raw ores to its neighbors. These exports have been cut down in recent years though, as pirates from the Circinus Federation have intercepted shipments or launched raids directly on their mines and fields. Offering to station some of your military on their planet as a defensive force would surely be a welcome proposition.

Would you guys be okay if I changed up the Economy and Manufacturing mechanics a bit? I've been running into a few unexpected limitations and have been considering giving you guys 'Currency' each turn based on your Economy stat instead of wagering a reduction in the stat.

Similarly, I've been thinking of switching the Manufacturing system to one where you can spend 'Industry Points', though these would need to be spent each turn and wouldn't be storable.

Diplomacy

So for the mercs I chose Festival, as it is the least defended place.
For the power I chose Rockton, just to prove we are better than the previous guy.
Diplomacy I'm going for anti-Circinus Federation factions as they are literal pirates that raid all over the area we are.

[X] Plan: Trade and Prosperity

-[X] The Lyran Commonwealth
-[X] New St. Andrews
-[X] Kahakai Kuna

Festival only has a single infantry regiment defending it. That's gonna get swept away by any form of armor, so best we reinforce the place.

Similarly, we still need to get our stability up before the police expansion bonus expires. Best to invest in solving the plight of the populace in Rockton to show that the new government cares! Goes well with our president's slogan of "prosperity for the people" too.

Speaking of prosperity. Want to know what gets people content with the new regime? Goods. Lots of trade goods. Let's make sure our links with our trade partners are as strong and healthy as possible. Kahakai Kuna gives our populace luxury goods which we need to maintain in exchange for a military formation, New St. Andrews gives us a favorable trade deal in exchange for our technology, while the Lyran Commonwealth can potentially help upgrade our mech production facilities so our tech and military become more valuable in the negotiating table with our neighbors.

I expect they'll make us pay through the nose, but it's a price I'm willing to pay for better mechs since our neighbors have a massive piracy problem.

Let's put a dam in Rockton where there's actually a needed for electricity while the other two options would only expand places that already have plenty of electricity.

Currently our current military is pitiful we should lay the ground work for a defensive alliance against Circinus and other pirate kingdoms, since our military don't currently have the strengthen to resist a large scale raid much less to share troops with other worlds, therefore is best to leave Khakai Kuna alone for now.

Another good idea try to booster our trade, St. Andrews is probably desperate for technology we can try to draft a sweet trade deal from it, specially since we going to focus in consumer goods and we can get tanks cheaper too.

Similar to @LucidProp's plan but with Yakusoku added since it would gain foodstuff and ores for our people and industry.
*Changed my plan a bit since as LucidProp said, Festival has little defenses.

Will we get an option to do a redesign on the Vedette? Something like replacing its engine with a common 180 ICE and increasing its armor and firepower?

You will eventually get the option to do some redesigns on stuff, but right now the government is mainly focusing on getting things back in working order. Though I will point out that you'd need to change the ICE to a 150 or a 200, the 180 wouldn't fit properly with its weight (50t).
Thank you for the update!

It's my pleasure!

How long will it be before we get a chance to establish relations with other nations again?

Probably at least four or so turns from this update. However, if you guys ask about certain things in the thread, I can see about fitting them into the next update.
