Dungeon Crawler You!

Actually, i have a question how many magic items do we have?
Because if we have less than 5 then i think the game might be rigged against us.
(Looks at the first chapter of DCC and looks at the vast amount of magical gear Carl got within the first floor.)
If we're counting upgrading equipment to magic items then
1.Taylor's yoyo
2.Moose's armour.
3.Calliope's skateboard
4.Calliope's ring
5.The fire resistant... bracers I think?
6.Drew's Bident
7?Is Calliope's bug foot sword magic?
We also got some spellbooks and scrolls

We might have more that I forgot, but we definitely have at least six magic items

7?Is Calliope's bug foot sword magic?
It is. It gives +1 to each of Swords and Thrown Weapons, and can be summoned back to her. You also forgot her rope/cord that she uses to let Moose pull her, which is somewhat animated, but not specifically indestructible.

For things that may or may not count, Drew's Hair gel gives him his Gravity Anchor spell and is technically not an expended spellbook, since it's still the item casting it; the Ring of Pyrophilia was effectively a spellbook, but also gives +3 Charisma to it's current wearer, and Drew also has a Beanie of +2 Int -1 Chr and a magic pipe that gives +2 Int while he's smoking using it, these three small statboost items may be too insignificant to count as proper magic items.

And then there's the one I forgot entirely, and I'm wondering if @eaglejarl has too, since it's never been brought up since: Calliope (again) got a T-shirt that gives +1 to the Regeneration skill and immunity to poison. This... seems like it should have mattered at some point in the time since she got it alongside her skateboard.

Oh heck yeah that's actually sweet. We could've had Calliope riding up to bugs holding a bag with a disperser on it, and set it off in her hand.

Almost everything that comes out of a lootbox is indestructible. I haven't decided if potion bottles can break, and I'm sure there's a few loot items that are fragile, but it's safe to assume that all loot is indestructible unless stated otherwise.

Haven't forgotten it. It's on her sheet, it simply doesn't come up that much. Regeneration:1 will have you back to full health over the course of a few hours, so it's not relevant in combat. You have run into multiple things that use acid, but nothing that uses poison.

Contraindicated, because fire gel is burny and charcoal briquette do not regenerate back into Calliopes.

[X]Wizard Supremicist
You misspelled [X] Wizard Supremacist, so the tally is not registering you properly.
The reason I like this so much better than Combat Medic is that plain, basic healing tends not to be a problem in this game. It's the special stuff, like debuffs that are a problem. I do agree with the criticism that the money part could be a problem. This will force us to pick something money related for someone else.
...which wouldn't be a waste, because money is really good for long-term survival in general.

Incidentally, here's a full list of the team's magical gear:

Taylor:
potion: health 1
potion: mana 0
potion: Iron Skin 1
scroll: Confusing Fog 3
scroll: Heal 5
scroll: Heal Critter 6
bathtub napalm 0
Kobold Fire Gel 0
remote trigger 3
Distributor Cap 2
Skyhawk Yo-Yo
Ring of Pyrophilia

Drew:
potion: health 3
potion: mana 2
scroll: Confusing Fog 3
scroll: Heal 6
Propeller Beanie
Wizard's Pipe
Bident

Calliope:
potion: health 3
potion: mana 0
scroll: Heal 2
scroll: Confusing Fog 2
Skateboard
T-shirt of Regen
Mutable Ring
Marston's Cord
Kruthak Needle

Moose:
Vambraces of the Knights of the Flame
Enchanted Chanfron of the Bellus Canis Legionis

Good morning!
Another Wizard Supremacist benefit:
Solid smoke could probably be used to precisely deliver payloads such as explosives and poison.

...which wouldn't be a waste, because money is really good for long-term survival in general.
As seen by the tier-3 bed, the fact there are even higher tiers, the "Access to all training guilds and an unlock for each skill trainable at that guild" "+25% discount at all magic shops"

@eaglejarl
Questions for our Guide:
What happens If a 200 Person group reaches class selection together?
When someone reads a spell scroll, does that cast the spell?

Well admittedly it could be worse, we could make jokes more fit for the Crusader kings series.
It's Incest jokes from top to bottom.
Worse?
What is wrong with a man marrying his sister-niece If both have the pure-blooded trait?
*innocent look*

We may also want to consider comparative advantage. We scored some damn rare classes from getting over a trillion views, I doubt many other crawlers got them. Meaning, we can be very useful to a raid group if we took...

Yeah I looked it up, apparently Wizard Supremacist and Former Child Actor are the only classes Drew unlocked that require that many views. Makes sense. They're both very powerful.

However, one step down at 500 billion views are the Senators! Excellent for raids. Though the Dem has pretty bad range. And the GOP works only on mobs...

@eaglejarl:
  • Does 'mob' include bosses?
  • Would Calliope's skateboard change size if she did, or if another player had it?
  • What happens if a Former Child Actor levels a skill beyond its initial level? (I want to know what Drew does without reliance on canon.)

Chapter 23.1: Questions and Answers, Part 1
Taylor scanned through the list of Drew's potential classes and then turned to their game guide. "Got a few questions for you, Levi."

"It's what I'm here for," Levi said, waving his teacup in a 'feel free' gesture. "Keep in mind though: So long as I'm a game guide, there are some sharp restrictions on what I can tell you. There are other kinds of hirelings and associates that can help you more."

"Sure," Taylor said. "When it says 'mobs', does that include bosses?"

"Generally," Levi said. "The answer to almost every question is going to have an 'it depends' tacked on. Basically, dungeon magic works the way the AI says it does. There are generally rules that apply in the majority of cases, but there's always going to be exceptions."

Taylor nodded. "Makes sense. What about our gear? If Leo takes a race that's much larger or smaller than her current body, will her skateboard resize itself?"

"I'd be shocked if it didn't," Levi said. "The vast majority of gear does, and the skateboard is part of her signature look. The AI has already given her a Legendary box for the skateboard, so it's unlikely to make her abandon it."

"Cool," Taylor said, relieved.

"I've got one," Drew said. "This Former Child Actor class...it basically lets me choose a new class for each floor, right?"

"Sort of. You're still a Former Child Actor, not whatever the new class is. You'll have some or all of the actionables from that class, but you won't actually be one of them. For example, if you chose to get the Democratic Senator's abilities then you would not be able to exempt yourself from the taxes, because that requires that your class have 'Senator' in the name."

"Okay. So I pick a class and I get some of its stuff, which lasts the rest of the floor. When I go down the stairs it all disappears, right?"

"It disappears when you arrive on the next floor, yes."

Taylor cocked his head. "Hang on. That was very specific. What's the difference between 'go down the stairs' and 'arrive on the next floor'?"

Levi smiled slightly. "I'm afraid that I can't answer that as long as I'm bound by the game guide rules."

"While I've got those abilities, I'm going to be using them and leveling them up," Drew said, ignoring the interruption. "Do I just lose all that XP when I lose the class?"

"I'm afraid that I can't answer that as long as I'm bound by the game guide rules."

Drew glowered and grabbed a chocolate-covered macaroon off one of the trays of refreshments in order to crush his aggravation under a tidal wave of deliciousness.

"How about the items and stuff?" he asked. "There's all kinds of upgrade potions, coupons, memberships and stuff. Do those count as actionables?"

Levi rocked his head in a so-so gesture. "It's complicated," he said. "Suffice to say that you would have a shot at getting them and I don't know for sure which of them you would keep. My guess is that you would lose the memberships and any physical objects that you still had on you, but not the effects of those items. That means that if you still had an upgrade coupon you then you would lose it, but if you had already spent it then you would keep the upgrade." He shrugged. "Can't be sure, sorry. And, of course, I'm not allowed to tell you about personal spaces or what sort of upgrades those coupons might get you. I'm currently under game guide rules, so I'm heavily restricted."

"Speaking of game guides," Taylor said. "Charlie and his people all had the same guide. There's about 200 of them; if it's taking this long for the three of us to get through path selection, what's going to happen to them?"

Levi scratched his neck in thought for a moment and, when he spoke, his words were careful. "It depends on the guide. The most common solution is that the guide's training hall is temporarily expanded with booths for each of the party members so that they can make their choices in parallel."

"Sounds like there's more there," Taylor said, raising his eyebrows.

"It's...complicated," Levi replied. "Like I said, it depends a lot on the guide. Let's move on."

"Okay," Taylor said after a moment. "How about spell casting? Some of what's on Drew's list mentions 'spells you cast' or 'your spells'. How does that relate to things like our Confusing Fog scrolls?"

Levi seemed grateful at not being pushed. "The fancy term for that is 'item-based spell abilities'," he said. "Something like a scroll or the Gravity Anvil spell that Drew can generate because of his hair gel. Those things usually say 'you can cast...', but that's an oversimplification. It's really the item casting the spell, not you. Drew, if you choose Wizard Supremacist then the Empowerment spell will have no effect on your Gravity Anvil."

Pokes the chapter, It's a chapter, boys, but not what we expected.
Well it's partially an info dump so that's something.
Vote result below, nothing much has changed here.
Adhoc vote count started by Bond674 on Sep 20, 2022 at 12:14 PM, finished with 193 posts and 30 votes.

PSA: Voting will close at 9:30pm Eastern tonight.

Votes continue to trickle in, but Former Child Actor has been solidly in the lead for 2 days now and discussion has slowed a lot. I'll leave it open for the next ~7 hours until I get home from work + grocery shopping, but then let's close it out. The next chapter is mostly written already and can be posted shortly after voting closes.

I think this is for interviews. Secret floors, that sorta thing.

Thank you for the answers, EJ.
Skill: Character Actor
Every time you reach a new floor you must choose a class from a list. You will receive all disadvantages of that class. For each actionable of that class (e.g. skill, spell, benefit, stat boost, etc), there is a chance based on your level of Character Actor that you will receive that actionable. These advantages and disadvantages remain in effect for the duration of the floor. This skill increases in level by 1 each time you descend to a new floor. It cannot be trained.

Actionables... it's a little vague. Say you're given a Gold axe, does it evaporate? Upgrade potions given as part of a chosen class, they get applied, what then? The skateboard didn't get upgraded, the AI gave Calliope a consumable. It prefers to give boxes and potions and such instead of just DM fiating +Xs. (Probably so the book could pretend to be soft sci-fi instead of fantasy. Changing the crawler's physical body and items instead of the local rules of reality?) Say you get a membership in a club as part of the perks. Do you get thrown out? I'm pretty sure you get to keep the spells learned from the spellbooks given by Wizard Supremacist.

Honestly, the signing bonuses you can get from each class are nuts if you can just take them cumulatively. In three floors, we'd get something like the following if we're lucky.
  • VIP membership in the Dungeon Book of the Floor Club
  • Pick two, duplicates allowed:
    • 500,000 gold pieces
    • 300 mana potions
    • 20 mana potions that disregard cooldown
    • A Cheat Code potion that will affect one of your spells
    • A Study Guide potion that will affect one of your spells
    • A Mastery Unlock potion that will affect one of your spells
    • Two picks from a list of spellbooks. The list will include Invulnerability among the selections
  • Silver Earth Box x2
  • Gold-Tier Top Hat
  • A Gold-tier Scroll of Upgrade that will target one piece of equipment of your choice
  • A Desperado Club pass
Hell, the Battlin' Baker class is practically all coupons and items.
  • Silver Earth Box x1
  • A recipe book containing 6 crafting recipes including:
    • explosive muffins
    • temporary stat boost cookies (Quality: Superior)
  • A portable EZ-Bake oven suitable for baking small batches of simple recipes while in the field
  • A level 3 personal space (available on the fourth floor)
  • The Industrial Kitchen upgrade for your personal space (comes fully stocked with baking ingredients)
  • 2 coupons for personal space upgrades (Kitchen category only)
  • The Marketplace upgrade for your personal space
  • The Food category unlock for the Marketplace
The only thing I don't think we'd get to keep is the Care Package benefit and maybe the unlock, since it isn't a physical item or place. Even if we don't get to keep skills and spells inherent to the classes we choose, FCA is still an excellent choice.

Edit: I'm wondering how all advantages and disadvantages disappearing when going down a floor interacts with Medical Student's debt. Is it a physical thing where we're actually in debt, even outside the dungeon, or is it a game mechanic that can be turned off? Guessing wrong can be fatal.

Edit: Of course, this is all nothing if items and boxes and coupons and unlocks don't count as actionables.

Always go with 'If Levi can't say, the Class will screw you'

Assume the worst outcome. Former Child Actor will discard any bonuses but keep all disadvantages with ONLY a CHANCE of getting each Actionable.

Although with the super lucky race it may overcome that.

a very flexible class and combines with drew not having found his style yet, maybe this will let him try somethings he would like

For reference, that is not the case in Dungeon Crawler Carl.

No, by wording it loses all disadvantages. We probably do keep the XP. From a meta standpoint the QM seems to want to make sure that we're not jumped by horrible consequences that we didn't know about when we picked our class or race. Also apparently XP was kept in DCC? From an in-character standpoint if it would screw us Levi could still recommend against a class in general without specifying why.

Do items, upgrade potions, coupons, memberships etc not count as actionables? That's kind of useful to iron out, would make a significant difference.

Haven't forgotten it. It's on her sheet, it simply doesn't come up that much. Regeneration:1 will have you back to full health over the course of a few hours, so it's not relevant in combat. You have run into multiple things that use acid, but nothing that uses poison.
Good to know, just a minor question, that is already obsolete:

Would it have made her immune to the DNP Taylor made for use on the Vespa? Or does that still count as Acid even if it's also poisonous?

[X]Former Child Actor

This synergizes exceptionally well with Drew's race, which encourages Charisma stacking and depending on Luck. It also gives him a lot of flexibility to fit whatever role the team needs, scales well as we go down floors, and lets us keep Levi around for advice and potentially enchantments.
