Pumpkins and ghosts, lanterns and songs. Candy aplenty, and costumes all round. This was Halloween. There was history here, and so many people had thoughts of the mysticism of the date.

John knew for a fact that some of it was true. Most of it wasn't though. This was mostly a time where people had fun. The college especially went all out for it. The reputation for it's event had grown year after year, and he knew for a fact that this had resulted in a lot of money. Which meant more effort and enthusiasm.

The sum total of all of that resulted in what could best be described as a small 'haunted town.' John had even dressed up as well to keep with the atmosphere. In this case he was dressed in a large robe that shadowed his face, and someone had dug up an old looking lantern that he was carrying around. In his other hand he had a massive bucket filled with candy that he was going to be handing out.

Tonight was a clear and bright night. Children were laughing, music was playing, and fake cobwebs and skeletons were everywhere. The crowning area was the maze of sheets and fake buildings at the edge of the campus.

"Who here is ready to brave the maze of TERROR!" John called out as he held up his lantern. "Come, if you dare!"

He had been doing this all night already. Guiding people towards the entrance and keeping people from becoming problems. Nothing killed enthusiasm like having to deal with a whiny child or drunken idiot. The bucket of candy actually helped a lot with the kids at least, and the drunk ones were usually quietly ushered off to the side.

Scott and Jean had already walked by. Both in superhero costumes. Jean had gone with something spandex and tight, which made more than a few people look. She pulled it off well at least.

Harold was wearing a blue shirt that was covered in red fake blood. He had a box of donuts in one hand, and had his security hat on. John had been a bit confused until he noticed the man had on zombie makeup. A zombie security guard. And the box of donuts had candy in it. The man pulled it off surprisingly well.

Meria had shown up at some point as well. The woman was attending a cauldron at the edge of the maze. The thing was overflowing with mist and had a light in it to give it a sinister glow. She had a skull mask atop covering her face, and was dressed in a sleek and form fitting black dress that went down to her feet. The effect in the night gloom made it so that all you saw was a bit of shadow and the bright white skull.

The girl had a wicked cackle by the way. John had gotten shivers when she had first done it.

Margret was overseeing the entire thing. The woman was dressed in a pink robe and had a strange hat on. She called herself a witch, but she seemed to be the only person that get the costume. John was pretty sure she was using the excuse to wear sleeping wear honestly.

All taken together it was a lovely and spooky night of fun. One where everyone seemed to be having a blast.

John liked the kids the best. They had dreams of silly and happy things usually. Every now and again there were dreams of terror too of course, but those were part and parcel of being human.

That was perhaps important to note. John looked up into the sky as he paused for a break. The moon was bright and full, and the stars shined down and twinkled.

Everyone had their own lives. Everyone had their own dreams. He could see them and note them. That meant something special for him. He had to remember though that the dream realm was a reflection of the real world. Not the other way around.

It was so easy to drown in the dreams and nightmares of the other place. Put importance there instead of elsewhere. It wasn't like John had a life at the moment. His job was good because it was secure. There was very little chance of advancement, and he wasn't going to get much of a raise any time soon.

John laughed to himself as he thought that. Then got to his feet and started to swing the lantern again.

"Who here is ready to brave the maze of TERROR!" He began again.

Real life, dream life, they both mattered to him. They both had to matter.

Right now, all the man wanted to do was put a little sense of wonder into people's eyes. Have a few kids laugh. See people have fun.

Under his hood, John smiled as the night grew darker. If a bit of mist leaked into the real world at his feet, no one noticed. If there were a few little ghosts lurking at the edges to make a few people scream, no one was complaining.

John pulled at the dream and let it seep into the real world just a bit. It wasn't something deliberate or even consistent. It did make the night darker and most beautiful.

The costumes became just a tad brighter and the laughs louder. This was a time for Halloween and a time for things to go bump in the night. It was time to have fun.

At the end of the night, the dragon's scales gleamed with power, and John wanted to say he understood a few things better. How everything was related. How wide and beautiful the world and reality was.

New Spell: Waking Dream - Creates a mist around the user in real life. Inside this mist, dream constructs and denizens can exist. This includes any dream forms for the user. These dream forms can be manipulated without falling asleep. The range is 100 meters times Wonder.

You have 150 Gossamer.

Tribute time!

Mysterious voters will provide no comments, only stare at you silently. :V

That being said, I liked this. Dreams are reflections of the real world indeed.

[X] 130

You know my policies regarding tribute by now; lots and often. We've got to beat out the bad guys before they can get their hands on the cool things.

Are we going to be giving ever increasing amounts?
The assumption is that the tribute amounts of the others are also increasing as more pick up the pace, for a multitude of reasons. Among them not wanting to experience the punishment again, or improving their gathering methods such that they can afford to give the same percentage but contribute significantly more.

Take those nightmare totems, for example. That isn't the only way to attract denizens, just one that draws heat from moral guardians (in the dream, this is literal, even, haha).

Considering the other Dreamers were already building up followers, and considering how much Gossamer they could gain from harvesting the Boogymen from one of those lures, and considering some of them might be sacrificing their real life to harvest far more than is healthy... I really doubt any less than 200 Gossamer is going to win another teaching session, which we could have had if we worked instead of grafting the Scales. We don't even know what proportion of Dreamers found better methods, so there's even a chance 130 means last place.

On the other hand (and implied to result from mixing Halloween and a Graft action by text), we can now blanket a good chunk of our town in Dream Mist; the danger and power should not be underestimated. Power because we could literally play superhero if we wanted to, and danger because Living Nightmares could play supervillain; a single one could kill hundreds in a night with that kind of power.

For even more power, we could let other people play superhero with relatively small expenditures of Gossamer, but we would first need to find people of good character. I'm not sure John has noticed any who could handle that much power.

@Lost Star are we capable of baiting a Guppy into attacking another target and then eating the winner?

Also was that Totem creating Boogiemen or just luring them in to clump together (thus decreasing the amount elsewhere and making them easier to destroy/harvest en-mass)?

How hard would it be to manipulate the flavor of Gossamer? We know Dreamcatcher has favored flavors

It's theoretically possible to have a guppy get another target. The trick is more in having the target there rather than baiting the guppy though.

The totem was luring boogymen and sort of 'tainting' them so to speak.

Also, it's not that hard to manipulate flavor for gossamer, but you'd need a specific dream to do it. You can basically 'season' a patch of gossamer with dreams.

General note: if we do this, we should pick something better to do with the special dream than feeding it to the Dream Catcher. Like making our own lure, perhaps one specifically for Guppies or those heart things instead of Boogeyman. Imagine! A dragon dragging a huge net covered in fishing lures and worms, instead of merely hunting around! Silly and impossibly impractical in real life, but the Dream Realm seems to take pride in that sort of thing.

So to get the flavor of Boogiemen and Living Nightmares, would visiting a big hospital and grabbing bad dreams from there help? It'd also be a good place to do some good deeds. Might even get an uptick in survival rates by improving patient's moods.

How hard would it be to make a non-tainting lure totem? Or for that matter to develop the ability to roar challenge for all and sundry to hear (thus attracting guppies)?

Hitting a hospital would probably get some good terror and despair filled dreams.

As for luring totems, it's a bit of a toss up. John knows it's possible to make them, but he doesn't know the specifics.
