And in return all we lose is a map that points out Who Specifically Is Romancable. Which I'd think by now should be fairly self evident to us as readers and Eldingar. Usually because, like him, they're a Lonely Monster Person.
Takara: I just don't get it, why does it keep leading me back to the lair that I stole it from?!

Not to mention, they did keep their word and help us save our house, while also fucking over a rival royally. So maybe we'll fight, maybe we'll find closure, but ultimately I'm not gonna write Takara off just yet.
Yeah, also a trickster love interest that starts out their story by robbing the protag is fairly common.

Yes, but characters who rob dragon hoards tend to have very short stories with violent endings.

And people that destroy our hoard which we recently regained while robbing us is gonna be reduced to a red smear on the floor or on a wall.

Wow y'all are pretty mad about this. Might I suggest toning it down a notch?

  1. This isn't that bad. Several of the spots on the map were stationary, so we don't lose much in the way of progress. It also keeps the map from being a crutch for us.
  2. We're seeing the other characters interact more, and build relationships between eachother and not just sort of sitting around waiting for Eldingar to ask them out. Now things have a personal stake.
  3. Takara is set up for interesting interactions with us in the future. Their reason for wanting the map is probably the crux of a route, and also now we have potentially an actual rival for affections. Its a unique tension!
  4. This also may have the potential to lead us to new locations after we've cleared the areas we saw the lights in.

or Issachar, the fucking weirdo.

They destroyed our hoard to get the map. That's a big nono that usually results in death.

Yes, but that doesn't have to be the case here, and honestly, I'm sure it won't be. Zerban isn't just gonna have us go all death by lightning on them, that would be a waste of a perfectly good character. And Zerban does not waste characters.

And people that destory our hoard which we recently regained while robbing us is gonna be reduced to a red smear on the floor or on a wall.
Pump the brakes there, Trogdor.

Yo. Dudes. They're a master thief and we're loaded. They're still a love interest and it wouldn't make sense that they'd just not steal from us. I'm sure the author has plans and it will all work out.

You all don't need to fire up the revenge porn engines over this.

Oh wow. It's almost as if that entire character was the most obvious trap in the entire fucking cosmos.
Can we not call the the genderfluid shapchanger a trap please?

Except they didn't. They scattered the pile, but gold and gems aren't going to be destroyed just from just being tossed about the room. Honestly by the time we get back they'll have probably swept it all back into a pile.

Assuming that Jun-ho and Makram are free by then, in which case Belial will probably have swept it all into a pile and made sure the other two have gotten drinks.

They said it was attuned to Eldingar. I assume in the way that one 'attunes' to magical items in D&D, which this has some roots in. A magical item can attune to whoever owns it, so long as it isn't cursed.

So, after a little while with Takara, it will presumably attune to their greatest need instead.
I'm honestly expecting Takara's greatest need to be something more substantial than constant money flow and then they kinda begrudgingly return the map because it's revealed they needed companionship (or something)

something something they were secretly that blip on the map that buzzed around like a fly on heroin all along

because I fully expect that kind of sappy bullshit

Edit: Just saw that this has been said at least twice and is obvious as hell but I've already typed words so don't care

Do not caaaaaaaare

"Oh, hey!" Belial waved at Eldingar as he passed. "I was just wondering what... kept you." His hand slowly lowered as the dragon nearly passed him without so much as a backwards glance.
"Okay," Jun-ho replied, a little dejected, and slumped down with his chin on his crossed forelegs.

God the little flashes of unhappiness as they think Eldingar's being cruel and kinda callous are legitimately unpleasant.

Even when they attached the tags to hurled knives in an attempt to change things up and catch the ifrit off-guard he still recovered easily, evading them without so much as a scratch.

fucking anime ninja shit i see you zerban

you can naruto run but you can't naruto hide

Though I'm also wondering if their absence from the Bestiary is intentional on Zerban's part.

Probably, we've only had two interludes so far and that's not quite enough to, like, extrapolate out a definite thing so much as a broad trend but it seems like they're usually geared around some kind of antagonist and what they're up to. Xiomara being of the more direct, villainous-from-our-perspective variety while Takara is more like the recurring rival in a sense. Not especially hostile exactly (they didn't kill anyone despite having a few chances also man rip Belial dude's gonna be feeling bad for getting utterly chumped) but definitely opposed, popping up now and then to harry and harass us on their way to their own objectives. So like...a frenemy type thing and much less of an "oh fucking shit" like Xiomara.

Who is basically just "leg it screaming in the other direction" levels tbh.

It'd be funny if it turns out that all Takara wants deep down is to be loved and so the map barely changes at all from its current configuration after attuning to them.

I think that's pretty likely honestly, in the same way that Eldingar expected that map would show treasure instead of the true power of friendship. The map's a bit of a fucker, it doesn't show you what you want or even think you need so much as what you actually need to improve as a person. And since Takara's basically a Tamamo expy right down to the whole "disgraced demon consort" thing there's a good chance that they're either grabbing it to help them in a campaign of revenge/work their way back into a toxic relationship. And by narrative rules it means that they're likely to, well like Issachar said. See their warped path twisted back on itself and all their victories start going up in smoke. Because the Map is basically a magical mentor and thus will bring you to enlightenment via relentless trolling.

"You pipe down," the incubus snaps, jabbing a talon at the hovering golden djinn. "You think a fully-realised intractable charm-dream is easy? You think an incubus can't seduce someone by talking? No, I can do that."

Completely unrelated to the current discussion, but I was going back to try and find a quote and ran across this. Belial wasn't exaggerating at all, was he?

Hope he's okay, as whatever Takara did to him sounded like it hurt.

...Okay, respectively, I understand the issues related here, but you know damn well I didn't mean it that way. Context is pretty frickin clear on that one, she just robbed our house, she was suspicious as hell, talking with her was a trap.

FFS man.

...y'know, makram was under no obligation whatsoever to defend our home and property from an intruder.

We are going to tease the ever-loving fuck out of him once the rage clears up.

Look friend, the truth is that I couldn't tell. I apologize for assuming the worst though.

Speaking of that, there's a certain kitsune in that show who runs around in an impractical spysuit, changes their gender several times, causes mischief to get attention and for most of the story is defined by their relationship with a boy they don't get along with.

Now, I am not saying that Takara has as much in common with Naruto as they do Tamamo-no-mae, but I am not not saying it either.

I've heard arguments for Naruto's orange tracksuit being that he's meant to blend in with civilians, not the local environment, and... well, it kinda holds up? At least if you compare what everyone else seems to be wearing, barring adult ninja with their flak jackets.
