DOOM - Rip and Tear, Eternally

so most of us got a look at the leaked trailer before they launched the new official trailer, and honestly, the e1m1 remix in that was much better than what we got in the official release, so somebody decided to redo that video with the leaked audio, and honestly it's much more impressive than the official trailer.

So is there key card in the new Doom? Hidden door? Damaging titles? Moreover why does the shotgun has only 20 shells? I expect demon hordes to be more like Serious Sam, not a trickle like in the demo.

well I think there are key cards, and yes there are secrets and easter eggs in each level, I'm not sure what you're talking about with Damaging Titles, and the shotgun can have up to 50 shells.......

also there hasn't been a demo for SP yet, plus doom always reserved it's hordes and hordes of enemies past a certain point in the game and only in certain areas soooo, not sure what you're complaining about here.

Ok so it's fixed I watched the E3 demonstration single player and I saw the shotgun only holds 20 shells. About the single hopes it is more like classic Doom and no horror type like Doom 3.

Ammo storage is probably low specifically to encourage gameplay where you use the murder button to yank health and bullets out of the enemies.

actually according to that gameplay video from the Nvidia event, ammo is about the same as the originals, and I assume they also have something like the backpack to double the ammo count.

though gauss rifle and plasma rifle seem to share ammo banks which was one of my sorta pet peeves with the original nowadays.

Some concept art got posted over on the SB thread, here it is.
The link.
This isn't all of the art, just the ones I figured were the best highlights.

so some extended gameplay from the PC version that showcases what nvidia put out in their conference plus some extra, this time recorded direct from the PC instead of someones phone.

I streamed some earlier; Ultra Violence difficulty, mostly 'blind' playthrough (I'd only seen the cgi trailers and the E3 gameplay one, that was it.)

www.twitch.tv/guillocuda if anyone is interested in watching; the videos should still be up there.

So TB just finished doing a stream of it and was loving the single player part of the game. Rip and Tear indeed.

Well, I dare say, compared to my earlier worries... this is a dynamite response. You could say I dig the capacity for violence in this game.
I just finished streaming about another hour of it; only reason I stopped is because I have a plumber coming over. I'll resume as soon as he leaves. :)

But Doom is very Rippy and Teary. Big +1 from me.

Edit: He just left. Starting again!

I do sort of wish that the Revenants still had their crazy little eyes from the concept art.

I'm now.. 9/10ths of the way through the game.. I think. Have been streaming the whole time, just taking a quick break to get some fud.

Edit: Annnd we're off again!

And I'm done.

Final thoughts:

Doom is one hell of a game--Very fucking intense at times, really fast paced, awesome fun through out. Some weapons I didn't really use much of (Chaingun seems underwhelming; assault rifle's mini missiles seem far more effective.) Plasma Rifle stun burst saved my life many many times, especially once upgraded with Chain stun.

Graphic-wise, they are definitely up there. Graphics were awesome even though I played on the stock Medium settings while I was streaming.

Level design is great. A couple of times I got lost/turned around, but a fresh look at the map saw me straight. Generally there were several ways to go on most of the maps (for at least parts of them, anyway.)

Enemies are a pain in the ass; they never relent, as expected from demons from Hell! I found Mancubus particularly tough, in the end I just BFG'd them or hit them with ~5 rockets each. Barons of Hell were fairly underwhelming besides an "Oh shit they're big and fast!" but they do hit hard WHEN they connect. Perhaps they just need a bit more health? Mancubus felt tougher. And actually, Pinkies were a right pain. They were fast and super tough. Took at least 4 rockets or 4-5 super shotgun blasts to kill a Pinky on Ultra Violence.

Bosses were a little bit predictable, but the action was fast enough that it didn't really matter, to me.

The weapon/suit upgrades were a nice feature, I thought, and possible adds some replay-ability by playing through and choosing different upgrades (You do not get enough to fully upgrade everything.)

A lot of secrets I missed; mostly because I'm bad at them :p A couple were very simple and easy to find, some were harder. I didn't find any of the Doom 1 easter eggs that I heard about, though. Just an excuse to play it again later! :D

Sounds seem a little indistinct; especially the shotguns. But most of the weapon sounds great: the chaingun in particular at low RPM sounds amazing.

Animation wise, they are great! Very fluid, realistic, gory, without taking too long. My only gripe is some of the demons seem to only have 1 or 2 glory kill animations; Mancubus and Cacodemons in particular only seem to have two and one Glory Kill animations, respectively.

The weapon effects are interesting. When you shoot a boss with the BFG, it actually full on launches them across the room or makes them stumble, missiles can stagger enemies, giving you a very brief respite. Plasma rifle seems a bit underpowered when shooting the bigger enemies--the HAR seems far more powerful, especially with the mini missiles-- but the stun bubble is amazing, especially when fully upgraded. I didn't try the charge up damage burst.

All the weapons seem fairly balanced--except as I said earlier, the Chaingun seems fairly underwhelming, despite looking and sounding amazing. I never got the chance to completely upgrade it with the mastery challenge though, which increases the damage each bullet does when the gun is at full RPM.

Story writing was fairly minimal, but very interesting and painted a full picture of pretty much everything. Doomguy just doesn't give a shit about anything and breaks everything, and it's amazing, while the other characters are all "WHAT ARE YOU DOING STOP". I won't be posting any other spoilers than that, though.

Over all, I would rate the game a solid 9.5/10, and that's purely because of the visual bugs I had, a couple of unsynced sounds, and how some demons seemed to only have one or two glory kill animations. The smaller demons had a perfect amount. The game was super fun from start to finish, and after some of the bigger, closer fights, I actually had to wait a few seconds to let my heart rate settle down it was that bloody intense!

Looking forward to trying out the Snap Map stuff later.

When's the expansion!?

EDIT: Forgot to mention. A couple of times it felt like the sounds were out of sync. And the Death From Above glory kill on Revenants animation was... felt broken, to me. In Hell I also had a visual bug where the Skulls would appear on the wrong place on the door when opening them, and then staying there (Hanging in midair) until I walked off. This was only on one level, though. All the others were fine.

My absolute favorite comment on the YT page is,
IEnjoyBeingNaked said:
0:30 I'm amazed at how in point blank range, he managed to shoot in between a guy's legs, then shoot to his right, then to his left, then to his right again, then to his left again before actually hitting him despite taking up half the screen.
Hurt myself laughing.

Summary of what I've seen: WANT but using laptop, so can't have.

What's up with the 'Gore Nests'? They look as impressive as the swarms that follow their destruction, but their purpose in-universe isn't clear.

I edited my review a bit after watching some of my stream and having a think; added about 50%.
