DOOM - Rip and Tear, Eternally

So my first 12 hours into Doom after my DL finished this morning.... I didn't even realize I just put in 12 hours into Doom already, huh.

While obviously the optimal playstyle is RIP AND TEAR THEIR GUTS BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD CHAAAAARGE- *ehem*, as it turns out you can in fact play Doom somewhat slowly, especially when you're using the Heavy AR with the Tactical Scope mod, which turns it into the de facto Sniper Rifle of the SP campaign (you know Doomguy is awesome when his Sniper Rifle is an automatic 50.cal).

Also managed to clear most of the early missions with perfect Combat Rating, All Challenges done and all Secrets found, which makes for easy fighting as I progress since I get weapons early (having the Plasma Rifle as early as the second mission helps solve a lot of things, especially with its Stun mod). Does make for slow going though, hence why 12 hours in and I've yet to finish the campaign.

While all the critical acclaim point to this being the true spiritual remake of Doom, I do feel that Doom actually feels less... well, purely Doom and actually has some of Half-Life's DNA in it, especially in the platforming and jumping puzzles. Not that that's a bad thing though, if there's any FPS game worth emulating it's Half Life.

Also, Chaingun is love, Chaingun is life.
Supet shotgun + stun bomb = love
About puzzle + secret, old FPS has tons of em, Doom 2, Serious Sam, Quake, so it's more like HL2 learns from Doom. Also Big Honking middle finger to CoD hipster this shit is great.

Can I just say that DOOM gives me some metroid prime vibes? Pinkies even feel like fighting grenchlers, the mastermind gave me Metroid Prime exoskeletal form vibes, and the room to room combat; large explorable maps, usage of jumping in combat, codex based lore system, the excitement of acquiring new weapons and abilities, the discoverable narrative, a silent protagonist who nevertheless still has some moments of personality here and there, the 3d map with downloading map stations, boss health bars, and slaughter based protagonist regeneration all made me feel very metroidy.

Also Samus Aran x DOOMguy crack one true pairing. Make this crossover happen fanfic writers

The 3D map really added to the prime feel, but the mouse controls make it so much faster paced then Prime. It makes me want to look into Mouse -> WiiMote Dolphin mappings for prime.

Good news everyone!

Mick Gordon has officially released the soundtrack for this game!

you can find it through his website on the spotify player.

On iTunes

on the Google Play Store

and probably on pandora and bandcamp

meanwhile here's a preview.

and as a sidenote it seems he's composing the soundtrack for Prey 2 as well :D

BTW, here's the complete released soundtrack, all 2 hours and 8 minutes of awesomeness, courtesy of Bethesda Softworks.

Update! They're adding an arcade mode and some retro-map textures to SnapMap.

Article:
The Arcade Mode allows you to play every level with all the guns, runes, and equipment upgrades unlocked. Plus, you can customize your gear before your run starts to discover which combinations are best for you.

[...]

In addition, Classic Doom modules are being added to SnapMap, the level creation tool. Plus, id Software has already created some maps using assets based on the original games for you to try out.

[...]

The update also adds two new multiplayer modes, Possession and Bloodrush.

I'd also forgotten that the multiplayer DLC came out a while back, because I don't care about MP so much, buuut looking at it again there's a system where if someone you're playing with does have the DLC, you can play on DLC maps and the like. Honestly, I think that's pretty fucking great of them, given how many games with MP DLC kinda mandate you buying it to be able to keep playing MP after one drops.

Noticing a lot of story references here, too. Bits of Demon History that I don't think were in the game itself. Makes me want to dig into the game itself again and finish up my post on detangling the story of DOOM.

Doom Eternal Reveal
Doom Eternal Official E3 Teaser

Bethesda said:
Announced at the 2018 Bethesda E3 Showcase, DOOM Eternal is the direct sequel to the award-winning and best-selling DOOM (2016). Developed by id Software, DOOM Eternal will deliver the ultimate combination of speed and power, along with the next leap in push-forward, first-person combat.

As the DOOM Slayer, you'll return to take your vengeance against the forces of Hell. Set to an all-new pulse-pounding soundtrack composed by Mick Gordon, you'll fight across dimensions as you slay new and classic demons with powerful new weapons and abilities.

"For the past two years it's been so inspiring to hear you talk about what you'd like to see next – and I gotta tell you, we're right there with you," said Creative Director Hugo Martin during the BE3 Showcase. "You want the DOOM Slayer to feel even more powerful? We've got it. You want even more badass demons? There are twice as many in this game. You want to see Hell on Earth? We just teased it. But what we're most excited about is showing you some of the things that you might not be expecting."

Witness the worldwide unveiling of DOOM Eternal gameplay at QuakeCon 2018 in Dallas, Texas, on August 10. The reveal will be live for attendees and livestreamed for everyone.

As I posted in the other thread...

Looks like it might be a prequel, since Doomguy's in his classic armor and not the Praetor suit.

Also, 100% concrete confirmation that the Doom Slayer is indeed Doomguy.

Samuel Hayden likely deliberately punted Doomguy/DoomSlayer to a "Hell on Earth" dimension. Doomguy's original Earth isn't the same as Hayden after all.

And the guaranteed way to keep the Doom Slayer busy? Give him daemons to murder.

And the guaranteed way to keep the Doom Slayer busy? Give him daemons to murder.

It keeps him busy, but provided they keep the same level of 'background' storytelling about his character as in the 'first' game, it won't keep him for long.

Hells name for him doesn't sound like a billion demons simultaneously shitting themselves in E-minor because hes good at killing them. The doom marine is intelligent in his own understated way and knew exactly what was happening for most of the game (hence destroying the pipes rather then gently turning them off).

Plus Hell would likely construct a 'Samuel Hayden is overhere, stop killing us' sign from Spider Mastermind corpses if it got them a few weeks break

But where are you going to get vast supplies of energy from?

And what, you'd just leave hell unexploited? Someone's gotta mine it

Apparently human civilisation was devouring so much energy even nuclear fusion wouldn't have been able to meet demand without complete societal collapse in the near future.

I don't think the new game ever mentions other energy sources, and all the lore on the energy crisis comes from UAC internal propaganda and the totally unbiased Dr. Samuel Hayden. We don't know just how bad the energy shortage really was, or if they ever figured out fusion technology. I mean, even the plasma rifle, the pistol, and the chaingun in Doom 2016 run on argent energy. Maybe they didn't figure out fusion and jumped straight from fossil fuels+renewables to argent energy.
