At least it makes our actions more understandable and empathetic. Yes it might drive them to treat Willie with kid gloves and like she's made of glass, but Willie needs some comfort and help badly right now.

Uh, wow. Being Porter is indeed suffering. We may be on the verge of a mental breakdown here from just the sheer amount of shit we've been exposed to since waking up in the Japanese base.
That being said, I don't necessarily think that it was a bad idea to hug the Hoppo - Sure, she threw the plane at Porter, but where the plane landed and the ensuing flashback is more of a piece of bad luck than anything else. She may have thrown the plane anyway, who knows.

Planes approaching at steep angles of attack.
Planes being "Under" you.

Do we know the specifically model of airplane which sank Willy? The Japanese tended to press anything with two wings and an engine into the roll of kamikazes, including a giant mish-mash of civilian models...
It was an Aichi D3A "Val" dive bomber, according to Wikipedia.

...it occurred to me that the direction this quest is taking could be Porter's descent into actual madness. She's going to need a LOT of R&R well away from the Japanese base's eccentricity by now, I'd bet.
I'm also wondering what reaction the Admiral and Kongou are going to have to this? Well-meaning but ultimately unhelpful assumptions that the revelation as to the Abyssal's infiltration is the main cause (assuming it's even true - I'm still on the fence about that)? Taking a possibly unstable shipgirl seriously and making an honest effort to try and help Porter get better? Something completely different that nobody here is going to see coming?

Asking after Hoppo would distract everyone from the real problem--Willie's PTSD--and considering Hoppo caused the freak-out in the first place I think we can check in on it after we've calmed down. But the fact that we did have a PTSD freak-out is important to convey both because it is relevant professionally for our commanding officer to know that her subordinate has a problem, and because it is important personally for Iowa to see that there's more to Willie than "incompetent fuck-up".
