Devourer of Worlds - A Lavos Spawn Quest | (Chrono Trigger x RWBY Crossover) (AU Elements)

I don't think Ruby or Yang would know about the bird forms of Raven and Qrow.

No, but if being literally a piece of someone can conceptually affect a ritual, then logically so should something that multiple people have claim to. Obviously not to the same extent, but if Ruby anticipated any problems from the feather having any kind of link to Raven, she would have said so. So either it didn't occur to her or it's not an issue.

It might not become an issue until someone makes it an issue. Intent tends to be important, with conceptual links.

For example: Weiss' hairpin is a memento of her mother's death. Penny's old core is a broken heart, and would never have worked for long. Raven's feather is a means of contact with a long-gone parent, now abandoned to this ritual. Adam and Blake were close, once, and then very much weren't. The crystal from Obsidian is quite literally made of blood from a lost hand.

But if it had been said like that, emphasizing the loss and futility instead of the connection, the result of the forging would have been quite different.

Right now, Shroud and Veil probably don't have any particular magical bond to Raven. If Raven learns what was done with her feather, and Obsidian or Ruby learn whose that feather was... then it might.

The precise timing is unknown, presumably it's been long enough for her to git gud, but recent enough the stupid bitch didn't blow her cover.

Weiss' hairpin is a memento of her mother's death.
More like a memento of their relationship that's mostly dead/defunct, Weiss' mom ain't dead, she's just a depressed alcoholic.

I agree with this. Also isn't Raven supposed to be one of the maidens at this point in time. I may be wrong as it has been a while since I have watched RWBY compared to reading fanfiction of it.
The previous Spring Maiden ran away and ended up with Raven's tribe a decade before canon, and Raven apparently made a token effort to "train" her for what sounds like less than a year before going "F*ck it." and killing her, gaining the powers either intentionally or unintentionally. So she's had them for awhile, which is the only way it works out because she's passed the somewhat arbitrary age limit on when you can be a recipient since then.

I was never sure if i actually believed Raven there. Sure, thats what she effectively said is what happened (though she still avoided explicitly confirming it), but raven is so obssessed with seeming strong and never a failure, that i could very well see her claiming to have killed or let her die on purpose when she actually failed to protect or save her, because shed rather be seen as a monster than weak.

Totally fair, but I think it's slightly more likely Raven killed her, just because she has a bunch of bandit minions to throw between the girl and any threat. Unless she died in a stupid training accident like "Take on all these Grimm by yourself... Whoops, thought you had a better grasp on your Maiden powers than that."

Do we know what the age limit is? Also if it accounts for aura users having slower aging?
I think M&K answered in an interview or QA that based on the Ozluminati's in-universe observations of women becoming Maiden's, the age limit doesn't seem have an exact cut off point and varies ("Magic works on stupid, arbitrary rules." to paraphrase Qrow), but their estimated limit is around 30 years old.

Eh, maybe. But if that were the case then Raven would have "confidently" and directly told Yang that "Yeah I killed her, what of it? I'm stone cold." when she questioned her about it. Instead she remained silent and shifty, and when Yang surmised what happened she immediately tried to deflect blame and justify herself by calling it a "mercy". Doesn't sound like someone who wants to be seen as a monster.

Canon Omake: The Ballad of the Reaper
Omake: The Ballad of the Reaper

The bar was packed, but it was so quiet that everyone could hear the quiet squeak of her stool as a woman with a guitar took her seat on stage. As she paused to adjust the microphone downward members of the audience held up lights by ones and twos. Lit lighters, candles, glow sticks and more, people held them aloft like a field of stars in the dim room.

The woman with the guitar smiled for a moment before her fingers sketched a slow melody and she began to sing.

When all is lost
When death comes calling
When red eyes light the dark
When there's no more stalling

When fear is here
And it has long teeth
When too many have died
Take your sword from its sheath
and-

The audience broke their hushed silence to shout.
"CALL THE REAPER!"

The woman with the guitar grinned as her fingers sped up and power chords thrummed. Each time the audience shouted she sung a reply.

"When you call the Reaper!"
they say you see a flash of red

"When you call the Reaper!"
an unseen blade leaves Grimm dead

"When you call the Reaper!"
they say you find not death but life

"When you call the Reaper!"
it matters not at all your strife

"When you call the Reaper!"
red rose petals left behind

"When you call the Reaper!"
her silver blade sharp and her silver eyes kind

"When you call the Reaper!"
She! Will! Answer!

Fingers danced and redoubled their tempo for everyone to go through the litany again.

Across the city a heroine turned over fitfully in bed. Unseen beside her, Crescent Rose caught the silver glint of the light of the shattered moon, and Ruby dreamed of connections and magic.

Omake: The Ballad of the Reaper

There's nothing about this I don't love. The moment the crowd joined in, I found myself smiling. And when it echoed Obsidian with "she will answer," I felt a number of feelings too tangled to adequately describe.

Canonized. Take a question, and choose:

[!] Sow & Harvest - Belief is a power all its own, and the title of Reaper carries belief with it. Already, Ruby Rose has begun to gather belief, and in her darkest moments that belief may just be enough to keep her standing. Of course, Ruby is not the first Silver-Eyed Reaper... [This trait provides Ruby with minuscule buffs based on "belief" in the Reaper. Belief from people she's personally interacted with is slightly stronger, and from those she's saved stronger still. However, even the strongest soul's belief is only a tiny increase to her capabilities.]

[!] She Will Answer - When you are alone and the Grimm close in...call the Reaper, and perhaps she will answer, as she has for others. Her silver gaze searches always for those in need. [Ruby's eyes already buff her abilities while defending others from the Grimm, but this trait strengthens the effect significantly and allows it to activate as long as she is acting in defense of others, even from non-Grimm threats. Specifically provides a substantial speed boost when rushing to the aid of another.]

I'm not dead, although life has been crushing me for a bit. I'll do my best to have a chapter out soon; I've missed having time to work on Devourer, and I'm eager to get back to the girls.

o_O
this sounds like the initial steps towards godhood.

Don't worry, I know how bad RL can get so take your time.

I don't envy the choice between these. She Will Answer seems like it'd have more tangible benefits, but I for one really like the flavor of Sow & Harvest.

@TaliesinSkye, good luck with deciding. Because I sure couldn't. :p

Sow and Harvest just means she has to become legend. She is well on her way. A soul provides very little... but she will be on the minds and lips of millions. Book of Revelations Jesus.

The weird thing is that it will probably flow both ways, eventually. She would start effecting people who only know her by word of mouth. And the souls of men to the poisonous purity of the silver eyes?

Both have excellent flavor in my mind, though.

This is incredibly sweet of you. I'm so glad you loved it, and thank you so much for describing how it made you feel.

Everyone's thoughts on the choices are interesting, so far. While She Will Answer would have plenty of use, I also find myself pretty sorely tempted by the really interesting lore implications of Sow & Harvest.

Would Ruby notice what was going on? Perhaps Obsidian would notice if she doesn't, and I suspect it is something Obsidian would find fascinating to study. Perhaps belief could even be something Obsidian could harvest herself as a renewable source of power. She is powerful enough to be able to do a fair impression of a goddess anyway. And if believing in Obsidian as Humanity's benevolent goddess of knowledge and protection gave Obsidian a connection to the believer in addition to granting Obsidian power, that would enlarge Obsidian's perception of the world quite substantially.

And funnily enough in Remnant just the belief that there's no need to fear because something exists that won't let the worst happen is enough to make a difference all by itself. Settlements outside the walls that trusted in Obsidian's protection might not draw Grimm in the first place.

On the other hand starting and managing a religion is no end of trouble. XD

The final interesting thing about Sow & Harvest that no one has mentioned is that hint about Ruby not being the first silver-eyed Reaper. It makes me wonder about the effects accumulating a legend might have on the line of Ruby's warrior ancestors, since even dead they shared a part in creating the belief and in being the object of whatever power it grants even now.

It makes me wonder if the trickle of power might create...impressions, of them. Recreations of them at their heroic best that linger.

Ask our dear QM about the other ideas "people", have pitched about the girls being gods. Whether its to play off or stand apart, it's something that might interest you.

Also the whole summoning ghosts harkens back to a certain villain quest involving a badass "cat-Faunus".

Semi-Canon Omake: Black Nostalgia
Omake: Black Nostalgia

Salem collapsed next to Blake, gasping for breath despite her small grin.
"How was that?" She managed, collapsing onto her back in a huff. "I finally managed to strike you."
Blake's answering smirk, however, filled Salem with a faint sense of dread. "And I'm very proud of how far you've come, Salem. I suppose I'll just have to increase the difficulty to match. You have ten minutes to catch your breath, and then we begin again." Before she seemed to focus inward, communing with that strange force she had claimed was her master. With a groan, Salem pushed herself up to a sitting position, taking deep breaths and stretching to keep her limbs from cramping up while she relaxed, quietly enjoying the company of her friend and teacher. Even if it was some of the toughest training she had endured.

After several minutes, she saw Blake open her eyes and turn to her. "Are you ready to continue, Salem?" Blake asked calmly and, at Salem's regretful nod, conjured a pair of shadows. The frog knight was familiar but the shadow beside it was new. It looked masculine if young, and the sword it drew seemed to somehow gleam even though it was entirely shadow. "Then I think it's time to practice fighting multiple foes at once, particularly enemies with actual team work."

Salem certainly did not let out a small pained whimper in response.

Salem jerked awake with a gasp, glancing around at her familiar bed chamber. She could feel her Grimm nearby, echoing her agitation, and she took a moment to calm herself. It had been so, so long. Detached as she was from humanity, centuries passed in the blink of an eye, and memories faded into little more than fog.

"So why am I remembering these things now? Why am I dreaming of her? And... " She murmured, pausing before sighing in melancholy. "No, it doesn't matter. There is still work to do." As she stood, her gown flowing around her, she glanced over at a ribbon resting on her dresser, the cloth a dull gray, faded and frayed by time and use. After a moment's consideration, she traced a single finger along it before turning. "And some things are more important than personal desires. You taught me that, Blake." And with that, Salem, Queen of the Grimm, stalked grandly from her room.

I'm half certain that Always Late is referring to Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust. The protagonist of the quest was Salem. There was at least one person who was killed and brought back as a puppet copy from semblance shenanigans. I vaguely remember that there might have been rumours that the cover identity for Salem was a secret faunus of some variety because of her treatment of the faunus community. Also 5 minutes in the thread shows a media post with a picture of the protagonist that is labeled "Totally not a catgirl" so that helps.
