Devourer of Worlds - A Lavos Spawn Quest | (Chrono Trigger x RWBY Crossover) (AU Elements)

[X] Reveal the Voice of the Grimm. {You will explain to your mortals how the Voice resisted your initial attempts at Dreaming of the Grimm, and that the Grimm have evolved once before. Your mortals will react to this knowledge.}
[X] Teach Blake to magically translate. {Blake will learn to spread her Thaumoglot trait to her teammates with an active spell; this spell borders multiple elements and might make her more comfortable wielding non-Shadow magic in the future. If this option is not chosen, Obsidian will cast the spell using Blake's magic.}

@x50413 is there any actual difference between Blake doing the translation vs Obsidian?
I imagine Blake doing it must take some constant concentration?

[X] Develop Yang's magic. {Some of the principles of Cielan Soul Magic might be applied to assist Yang in developing her unique style. She has largely stalled on her own; she might appreciate something to kickstart her development.}
[X] Examine the Silver Eyes. {Ruby's Silver Eyes seem different in the past. Examine them through your connection, and attempt to determine what has changed.}

That Sliver Eyes option is really tickling my plot senses... I bet if that option goes through, we'll discover that there is no presence behind them in this era. Yet. :whistle::wink2:

It's an active spell with a duration - she'll refresh it periodically.

The benefit isn't so much the spell itself. It's...how to explain?

So right now Blake knows one spell (and sort of another). She learned Barrier from Obsidian, and it's been used once or twice.

She sort of knows Janus' Dark Mist - her version isn't perfect because their spellcasting styles are different, and she hasn't fully converted it over yet.

This would be an opportunity for her to learn another actual Spell, giving her a useful bump in magical skill, but also giving her practice dipping her toes into other elements - the translation spell is ostensibly Shadow-aligned, but skirts the border of multiple elements because it's complex magic.

Remember that her evolved Transcendent Magic gives her the capability to use all elements of magic, but she has no practice doing so.

These two action are the most important right now if we want to advance in our quest!

Better to keep them informed of the situation. After that, we can work on their skills. Yang's style needs to be updated too.

You know, I was never really sure about whether all magic is elementally aligned or whether it's possible to engage with magic in a way that isn't really aspected like that, or whether there are clean sources of magic that don't come with the alignment. I could see Obsidian being shadow aligned and so skilled alignment doesn't matter, or no alignment at all.

Definitely don't want to keep the Voice of the Grimm a secret at this point. I'm slightly dubious of just how useful learning translation magic would be for Blake. I'd rather Obsidian do it and focus on Yang or Ruby instead, who would get more gains.

Its probably possible
But that most likely belongs to a different setting for now unless we find some in the ciel to analyze

These two options are the most time sensitive, I think. Knowing about the Voice of the Grimm is relevant towards understanding how they changed over the eons, while gaining a key insight about the Silver Eyes can probably only be done while in the past.

Not sure why teaching Blake how to translate is in the lead; it's primarily meant to get her started on learning other magical elements. Obsidian will still cast the translation spell if the option isn't taken.

Hmm, all things considered I'd kind of like to give the team a chance to train in dreams again, and I think that given the context revealing the Voice could be very useful in giving them leads to find out how the Grim got stronger in the present.
Training in translation is a solid alternate choice, but not needed directly right now.

Yang's option sounds like an interesting thing to do at some point, but also sounds kind of like something she might be able to do on her own in this time period. Admittedly likely with less overall growth, but I'd put it below the translation spell on my list of time sensitivity.

Silver Eyes is a hard one for me, because it is simultaneously a possible massive source of information and capability, and also possibly a waste of time in the short term due to the lack of clear relevance to the current situation.
To put it another way, Silver Eyes is too big of an open question for me to think exploring it now when we still have little to no context on it is worth more than options we can more clearly see the results of.

On Elements and Magic
You know, I was never really sure about whether all magic is elementally aligned or whether it's possible to engage with magic in a way that isn't really aspected like that, or whether there are clean sources of magic that don't come with the alignment. I could see Obsidian being shadow aligned and so skilled alignment doesn't matter, or no alignment at all.

It's possible. Hmm. I might elaborate on this later, since I'm on my phone right now, but basically:

Cielans don't use the traditional elements at all. Rather, their use of magic is flavored by their individual souls.

For people using CT-style magic, there's two primary types, which might be simplest to think of as "source" and "terminal" - or "server" and "user", or other similar terms.

Essentially, most magicians are what you'd call "terminals" - magical energy flows into them from somewhere, is processed by their "self," and is then accessed by their mind to use magic. The act of processing it automatically converts it into their element - which is a collection of related concepts that tie into their identity.

Much rarer are "sources," from which magical energy flows into others. They have access to a purer form of magical energy, which can be shaped with much more freedom - it can be turned into any of the elements and used in that way, or it can be used in its pure form (a la Lavos' Dreamreaver). In Devourer, our only examples of this are Obsidian and (to a degree) Penny - although Blake approaches this through her connection to Obsidian.

Some Shadow users are also able to wield other elements, if they resonate with the right parts of the Shadow element - as described somewhere in-store, Shadow is the gulf that separates the other elements, or when looked at differently the commonality that connects them. This isn't the same, practically speaking, as what Obsidian does to wield all elements, even if the practical results are very similar.

Put another way - Obsidian wields the most basic form of magic, from which all other magic is made. Thusly, Obsidian can wield all other magic, simply by building it from her own.

RWY wield magic that's been filtered by their selves, "refined" into elemental energy that's simpler to use but can't ever be something it isn't. You can't work backwards.

Shadow wielders straddle the line between the two - because it's conceptually malleable, as a representation of the unknown and the void, Shadow can emulate the other elements - but it isn't the same.

Blake, as a Shadow user, could have learned to use the elements given time and practice.

Now, with Transcendent Magic, she's...closer to a "source" than she was before. Not quite there yet...but closer than any other human has been.

It makes the most sense to me to take the actions that require our direct attention the most and that are less likely to come up again organically. Our mortals will never find out about the Voice if we don't say anything, and the reason Yang's even in the vote is because she's stalled on her own and needs some outside attention to clear the logjam. Silver Eyes won't happen without us either, but gathering data from Veve is bound to happen at some point; the translator spell's main benefit is giving buffs to Blake, who doesn't need them as much; and while training in magical combat is useful, it makes more sense to me to do that after we've gotten Yang to start progressing again.
