Dark Prince of Camelot

They burned people alive on mere suspicion of magic, if that helps you figure it out. :V

I'm not saying that Morgana did nothing wrong. I'm just saying that I'm not so sure they waited for the weird stuff before they broke out the torches and pitchforks.
Okay, maybe I am saying that Morgana did nothing wrong. :V
I'm guessing it wasn't just "OH NOES MAGIC IS TEH EBULZ", as other have pointed out that magic wasn't really regarded that poorly.

So Morgana did something more than just "knew magic"; Merlin was a celebrated member of the Court of Camelot. If Morgana's only "fault" was "as good at magic as Merlin, and being sassy", she wouldn't have been so poorly regarded. She did something. Even if that something was "just" delving into magics that were terrible and did terrible things.

End of the day, the reasons for past actions are little more than academic in my opinion. Morgana and Mordred might have been justified in their rebellion against Camelot, end of the day though it is still their fault that the Knights have been fighting a desperate holding action for the past thousand thousand years. Granted, it might have been worth it, maybe, the present can't be changed and all there is to do is to move forwards.
That's fair enough, and I'm definitely of the mentality that wants a more nuanced result in this Quest than just "take over the world and permakill the Knights".
But Morgana hasn't been reincarnating, she's been in continuous existence. We definitely need to be cautious regarding her.

'They' who? Camelot was the Land of Magic. The magic the setting has today is just remnants of what was.

Merlin's magic does not stem from the sword or the Round Table, yet he is the hero, and Morgana is the villain.

Damn, that really makes me want to visit Auntie, if only to unlock her entry.

Edit:

He also said to Bone he does not get along with his family much.
Some good insight.

While we don't know for sure what Gally is going to do with Morgan Le Fay. In the versions of the King Arthur Legend, she is a magic user who is seriously obsessed with trying to seduce Lancelot (to the point of doing some skeevy things for it) and destroy Guinevere. Now given that Guinevere was well liked, it's not terribly surprising that Camelot turned against Morgan, no matter how much Guinevere might have deserved taking down.

There are some variations. (A common one, is to put her in the place of her sister Morguase in the role of conceiving Mordred. with Arthur. Which is why Mordred is a bad seed, because Morguase/Morgan is a half sister of Arthur and incest is bad)

Other's have her dealing with necromancy, astrology, curses...it's relatively debatable how much of Morgan's evil is the result of her being essentially kidnapped, and then married off to someone she didn't want...but on the other hand some versions have her attempting to kill her husband so *shrugs*

There's a lot to draw on, so I'm waiting to see what Gally does.

Wait, wat? I can't remember any of those things in particular. What comes to mind most was that time she switched out Excalibur's sheath with a fake.

Morgan has a serious grudge against Guinevere. Sometimes, it's because Guinevere got her booted out of court by revealing her affairs, which must've sucked considering that Guinevere was up to you-know-what with you-know-who.

That said, getting booted out of court didn't stop Morgan from fun times during Arthur's reign, after Arthur's reign, and in at least one case, before Arthur's reign when she was said to have had Oberon with Julius Caesar, which is hilariously in-character for Caesar but still really, really weird.

No, I mean, like, Citations on this stuff. In so much as Arthurian Legends have citations. I want to read it for myself.

The earliest complete story for her comes from the Vulgate Cycle (Lancelot-Grail Cycle) which is where most of this comes from. Although there are a few Post Vulgate sources as well (The story of her arranging for Arthur to lose that sheath comes from Suite du Merlin)
This was expanded on in Thomas Mallory's Le Morte D'Arthur (The Death of Arthur) later on.

Morgan herself, has a number of potential origins, although he etymology of the name seems related either to Morrigan an Irish Goddess, or Morgen's (Irish/British Water Spirits similar to Sirens)

I don't think there's a free version of the Vulgate Cycle, but it's not hard to find a free version of Le Morte d'Arthur.

Ogier the Dane is the one who comes up a lot when it comes to Morgan's non-Arthurian lovers, but Googling the Matter of France is a serious pain because it never experienced the same revival as the Matter of Britain. The reference to Oberon as the child of Julius Caesar and Morgan le Fay comes from a short passage in Huon de Bordeaux, which otherwise focuses on the exploits of the title character.

Regarding Morgana: Your mother and her inner circle always gave you one version of her story, containing a lot of black magic, attacks on Camelot, and attempted assassinations. Your Aunt stuck to a different story, rife with parental favoritism, arrogance and jealousy from Artura, and unfair persecution based on things Morgana did to survive a very harsh childhood spent wandering the multiverse.

Befitting a Rogue, Undecided, you chose to believe the truth was somewhere between those two extremes. Morgana never openly attacked Camelot while you were alive, until the Fall, so there's that.

Currently we've got a tie, so I'm going to wait until that's broken to move on.

Chess and Soccer are pretty much locked, at 18 and 17 votes respectively, but Home Ec and Shop both have 13 votes.

You know, looking at those who we have met and assuming that all the figures of Arthurian legend are involved in this world, I noticed someone seems to be notable in their absence. Where is Ms Dulac?

She's an exchange student from France, who'll show up later but claim that she was there all along. :V

The real question is what the Green Knight is doing there.

No, for if we go by the idea that there is a mirror to the round table in France and Italy (reflecting the Three Matters that is the origin of the Arthurian mythos in the first place), the exchange student would need to be someone prominent in said stories, yet would fit in with who we have … maybe Roland?

I was making a joke about the meme of Lancelot being a later addition by somebody french.

That's some pretty specific wording that doesn't rule out tons of black magic, and a few subtle attempts at assassination. :p

Hmm...neither stories are actually exclusive....

...there's also the Morganna romance angle.

Holding Back
You've been thinking about your second round of clubs all day, but you haven't yet consciously decided what you're going to be doing. Once Piper asks the question however, it doesn't take you long to decide.

Chess is something you learned back in Camelot, and it's always been something you've enjoyed. Though you were never able to beat Merlin, you came close a few times, and you though it's a less visceral thrill than fighting, and less joyous thrill than music, it's a thrill nonetheless. So that's an easy decision.

Similarly, soccer is something you've been playing since childhood, although it's been years since you kicked a ball around. Though the version of the game you're used to play is a lot less refined and a lot more violent than what passes for the sport now, it's still worth checking out. Especially since it seems Ginny's taken a disliking to you. Maybe this will be your chance to smooth things out, or at least discover why she was glaring at you all through lunch.

And finally…home economics. You're fairly sure that one involves cooking, which means you might be able to feast upon more modern delicacies if you attend. Definitely something that requires your attention.

"Sounds good to me!" Piper says as you list the clubs you're interested in. "I think we're still getting the Gaming club under control, so let's try…chess first, shall we?"

"Look…" Piper says as the two of you walk. You notice that she's biting her lip subtly, as if there's a small part of her trying to keep her next words in. It's a look of vulnerability that looks entirely out of place on the face of Lady Percila Peredur, and it leaves you with a strange unease. "Look, about Ginny. Don't let her…throw you."

"Throw me?" You ask, smiling slightly despite yourself. "Are we going to fight?"

"You never know, with her," Piper says, though she doesn't smile when she says it. "She's been very…frustrated, lately. I don't…"she pauses, and shakes her head. "I don't know. I have too much on plate to deal with her, so I thought I'd give you a heads up."

"Well, it's appreciated."

Chess club is even smaller than Music club, only six people other than yourself. Most of the members actually look surprised when you walk in, and then stand there awkwardly as if expecting you to realize you're in the wrong room at any moment.

"Chess club?" You ask, just to reassure them you're in the right place.

"Yes," says one of the members, a short boy with limp black hair and glasses. "Yes, we're the chess club. We didn't…I mean, what's your name?"

"Morgan Penn."

"The new guy," he says. "Did you really beat Conner in fencing?"

Maybe. "Red hair? Scar under his eye?" You ask, motioning to the corner of your right eye. You still haven't learned everyone's name, and you know how this kind of gossip can be exaggerated if you're not careful.

"That's him!" The boy says. "My name's Andrew, by the way. President of the chess club." He grabs your hand and shakes it enthusiastically. "We didn't expect you to show up. Oh! Um, introductions." He steps off to the side to give you a better view of everyone in the room. "I'm Andrew, like I said. This is Blake," he says, gesturing to a heavyset blond boy with glasses, "Colin," a lanky kid with a thick, frizzy afro, "Heather," a plain looking brunette with glasses and an oversized sweater, "Will," a kid with a dark jacket and a backwards hat which you know is against dress code, "and Aubrey." A beautiful brunette who looks about as nonplussed as she does out of place. "Put us together, we're the chess club!"

The chess club regards you with a mixture of suspicion and confusion – all except Aubrey, whose face doesn't betray a hint of emotion. "So are we going to play now?" She asks. "I haven't played Will in a while now."

"Right, right," Andrew says. "Will, you and Aubrey play while we introduce Morgan to the club." Will shrugs and starts working with Aubrey to set up a board.

"So is there really all that much to introduce?" You ask. "It's Chess club. Seems pretty self-explanatory."

"Oh, yeah, I guess," Andrew says with a somewhat nervous chuckle. "We play chess…talk about chess…properties of chess…"

"We also quote the Breakfast Club a lot," Blake says. "Any John Hughes, really."

You're not sure what they're talking about. Annabelle's memories provide no illumination.

For the rest of the period, you exchange small talk with Andrew, Blake and Colin while watching Aubrey and Will play. Though she ultimately loses, Aubrey is a careful and meticulous player, often taking quite a while to make a move. Will is a bit quicker and more reckless, but clearly more practiced.

"You didn't let me win that time," Aubrey says as they clean up the board.

"You told me not to," Will says, although he seems unsure of whether he's done the right thing or not.

"I know. Thank you." Aubrey turns to you and motions over your shoulder. You turn to see Piper waiting for you at the door. "Your guide's back," Aubrey says. "If you come back tomorrow, we'll play a game. Or at the party this weekend. I play better with some wine in me."

She gives you a sort of half smile and walks out the door.

"I still can't believe she's in Chess club," Andrew admits once she's gone. "See you around, Morgan?"

"See you around."
***
After leaving Chess Club, Piper has you change into a spare set of PE clothes, a t-shirt and some loose fitting athletic shorts. From there, she leads you down a few flights of stairs and out a large pair of double doors. You can see the soccer field from where you're standing, students in brightly colored pinnies darting back and forth across the field.

"Well, I've got to run," Piper says. "You can make it to the field from here, right?" And with that, she vanishes back into the school.

A bit abrupt, but you shrug it off and head over to the field. From what you can tell, students are scrimmaging, red vs. yellow. Two red jerseys break off from the on field chaos to greet you, and as they get closer you see that its Ginny and another girl you don't know.

"You must be Morgan!" The other girl says when she reaches you, grabbing your hand from where it rests at your side and shaking it enthusiastically. "It's great to meet you! I'm Gabrielle, the new Soccer Club captain." Gabrielle is tall, almost as tall as you, with hair that doesn't even reach her ears. A pink streak goes through the center of her head, starting at her bangs and continuing until her neck.

Ginny says nothing, just crosses her arms and watches you.

"Do you have any questions for us, or do you just want to start playing?" Gabrielle asks. "I heard you're kinda an athlete."

Talk about a school grapevine. Is there anyone who doesn't know you are at this point? As strange as it is, it's also a little comforting – it's not like you were ever anonymous back in Camelot. Everyone recognizing you makes you feel at home, in a weird, conceited kind of way.

"I'll just jump in, if-"

"You're yellow," Ginny says, cutting you off before you can finish. "Grab a pinnie from the pile." She turns and jogs off without giving you a chance to respond. Gabrielle looks like she's going to say something, but then gives an awkward laugh and follows her.

You sigh and throw on a yellow pinnie before joining the game. It takes a moment to get back in the rhythm of the sport, but after a bit of running to stretch your muscles it all comes racing back. A boy in a yellow pinnie waves to you and kicks the ball in your direction, but before you can get a foot on it a silver and red blur intercepts the pass and streaks down the field.

You watch the back of Ginny Farrow as she scores with a curious frustration.

For the next several minutes, the game continues much the same way. You get passed to several times, but every time, without fail, Ginny is there to intercept. She's a streak on the field, and no matter where you go you can't seem to shake her. As minutes tick by without you even touching the ball your frustration grows, swelling to true anger.

Ever since the fight with Conner, you've been holding back, and now it's biting you in the ass. Ginny is faster than you, tougher than you, and she's abusing you because of it. But you're not some helpless victim for her to fuck with – you can do something about it.

Obviously, you can't go all. Blowing your cover on the first day because of a club soccer game would be the height of idiocy. But you could match Ginny, in speed and strength, and see if she can take an even fight. Maybe it's time for her to see what it's like to not be the best player on the field.

[] Don't hold back. Play to win.
[] Don't let her get to you. Continue as normal.

@Gally Just to clarify, is Ginny being obviously superhuman here and running around the field solo scoring at will (and people are either noticing or not noticing) or is she peak human-ish and everyone just thinks they suck too much to compete and so this isn't drawing heads or what?

And is there any read from anyone else on the field as to a) other people also getting frustrated or b) anyone seeming to show that this is uncharacteristic of her?

She's not obviously supernatural but she's running circles around everyone on the field. She's quite clearly a pro-level athlete playing with a bunch of high schoolers.
And is there any read from anyone else on the field as to a) other people also getting frustrated or b) anyone seeming to show that this is uncharacteristic of her?
This is a good question - I modified the wording a bit to hopefully clarify that she's targeting you specifically, rather than streaking all over the field soloing the game. People seem more accepting than frustrated - it's clear the red team's strategy is "get the ball to Ginny" and the yellow team's strategy is "keep it away from Ginny, please oh god here she comes."
