Fallen Legends by GreySilhouette reviews
When Anakin does not find Ventress and Ahsoka is found guilty and sentenced to death, Obi-Wan interferes and breaks her out, unable to stand by and let such a travesty of justice take place. The Council complicates matters by jumping to conclusions, and while Obi-Wan and Ahsoka attempt to find out the truth of what happened, Barriss is planning to set off another bomb...

Impressions before reading:
I think I was drawn to this one at the idea of Obi-Wan being the one to break the rules, leaving Anakin behind to be the law-abider. Which is a hilarious contrast, by the way. But I'm suspicious of that complete tag; I don't remember it being complete the firs time around...

Review:
Ugh. This is frustrating. I want to like this fic, it's got a solid concept behind it, but it insists on sticking to the least interesting parts of it: namely, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, and Ventress traipsing through Coruscant dodging patrols and trying to find clues to the bombers. It doesn't help that the more interesting viewpoints - the Jedi Council and Barriss - involve truly infuriating amounts of self-delusion, tunnel vision, and complete refusal to even consider that they might be wrong. Makes me really wish there were more Anakin sections.

And then the fic cuts right off at the end before it can give more than a cursory glance over the aftermath! Even though it should rightly have Sidious cursing up a storm! Aaaaaargh!

Verdict:

Captain America is the undisputed leader of the Avengers, but when he goes down? Iron Man steps up. Fury wants to know why nobody else thinks that's crazy. (A short story in two (three) parts)

Short little character piece.

Review:
The second chapter is hilarious, mostly thanks to Thor. His fish-out-of-water understanding of American capitalism is deeply amusing both in its inaccuracy and it's accuracy.

The third... well, that's the character analysis, and it's good. It does Cap well, and I think it does Tony well, and it really does explain why everyone listens to Tony when he's heroing rather than being an insufferable genius.

Verdict: Keep, keep!

Flat-Face and his Pervy Circle
Good silly. Definitely good silly.

Verdict: Got some nice chuckles out of that one, so keeping.

I mean, there's actual precedent in Discworld for wizards summoning Death (and sometimes inadvertently getting Susan instead), they both have dark British humor and Susan is even a schoolteacher.

The Simple Things by weebee reviews
Kuno slips Ranma a chemical that is supposed to remove all inhibitions, in order to get the pigtailed girl to profess her love for him. This makes all involved rather uncomfortable, but surprisingly, there are no fatalities.

Well, that's one way to take a sword to the Gordian Knot that is Nerima. A traumatizing and probably hilarious way.

Review:

Sadly, Ranma's lack of inhibitions only lasts a chapter. But it's a hilarious and cathartic chapter: Kodachi gets a clue-by-four up the head that actually sticks; Kuno is... well, he earns a living Darwin Award, let me put it like that; Shampoo's bike gets thoroughly trashed; Nabiki gets her camera smashed and the fear of martial artists put in her; and, well, comes dangerously close to a menage a trois with Akane and Ryoga that's really only stopped because Ranma clearly doesn't get sex. Like, that's a bit of a running theme here.

At which point the plot switches to the fallout. Sadly, this doesn't get very far before the fic dies, but there's some interesting stuff with the host club scene, and Akane's rage getting generally transferred to Genma instead of Ranma is nice.

And, proving that the Nerima madness isn't going away, the last chapter ends with Akari charging towards Nerima on pigback, intent on challenging Ranma.

Verdict: Waiter, I'll be keeping this, please!

Ascension by thebluninja reviews
Heavily AU. Thanks to a cold, humanity never discovers the Prothean ruins on Mars, and barely develops Mass Effect technology. They step out onto the galactic stage after the Reapers have harvested every other species, and find the crumbs left behind by the turians, asari, and salarians. Now they must adapt to fight a foe who won't be seen for far longer than human history.

See, this is what I want from my Mass Effect AU fics.

Review:
Now, this is an interesting AU! Sooner or later, something like this was going to happen: a species goes into space just after the Reapers harvest a galaxy, notice the shit going down, and royally fuck up the Reapers' plans. Like, say, nailing the Citadel with an RKKV. But this isn't just a HFY! luckfest here; Earth running into the Singers1 by complete accident is all that clues them in to the Citadel being a trap, and the only reason Earth isn't harvested anyway during the canon cycle is because of the Protheans locking the Reapers out of so many relays, including the Charon one. And that's before they find a Prothean VI and take the opportunity to not dive completely down the Eezo rabbit hole. It's made very clear that humanity has a chance here because they stand on the shoulders of giants.

The first three chapters are dedicated to setup, establishing the changed humanity and their interactions with the greater galaxy - most notably the Yahg, who were a brief footnote in the original games but here are humanity's great galactic rival. Though it should be noted their society is fairly standard "Predator Warrior Race" stuff. The rest of the fic is dedicated to what's basically the plot of Mass Effect 2, greatly complicated by the different circumstances.

Overall, a fun AU romp that doesn't go overboard.

Verdict: Keep!

  1. Almost certainly Rachni.

A Second Chance by Muse of Schleissheim reviews
He died wishing he could fix his mistakes. Now he has been given that chance, but in a way he never expected. Anakin Skywalker has been sent to the Clone Wars, not as himself but as Darth Vader. I always love me some "Darth Vader in the PT" fics. The man is a terrifying, nigh-unstoppable force, but there's only so much the OT can do with that considering the lack of Jedi opponents. Though there is that one scene in Rogue One...

Review:

Yuck. Yuck. Yuckyuckyuckyuckyuck. I don't like any of this.

For starters, passive voice. Again. I think that's the most common complaint against fics I've made. More to the point, I do not like the things it does with The Force. I don't like that The Force manifests itself as an actual being in front of Vader. I don't like the very Christian implications of that entire scene1. I especially don't like the whitewashing of the Dark Side.

That's been a bugaboo of Star Wars fanworks for ages, dating back to the days of the old EU. No, you cannot "safely" use the Dark Side of the Force. It's addictive and kind of explicitly forces you to perform progressively worse and worse acts. You can turn away from it, but it is not safe to use. Something the Force in this fic contradicts.

And don't even get me started on Quinlan Vos. I'm not familiar with his canon self, but here he seems cartoonish. I just don't buy into him as a character.

Further Machinations by Mac Ceallach reviews
The aftermath of a successful attempt at time-travel. Aizen is dead, but there are still plenty of upcoming challenges that Ichigo and his companions must face. Sequel to Hogyoku ex Machina; does not fully comply with Bleach canon after the Deicide arc.

Hogyoku ex Machina sequel, that sadly starts with another filler arc and then never goes anywhere.

Review:
Ah, not filler, but a movie. Specifically, Memories of Nobody. Very much a wham-bam-done sort of chapter, and honestly, it feels perfunctory. Exactly the kind of risk you get with Peggy Sue fics like this.

I still have fond memories of Pacific Rim, a classic giant robot movie except it was made in America. Pity it was never popular enough for a large fanfiction scene.

Review:

Huh. This seems familiar. Was iowaforever part of the team working on The Bridge? Meh, that's for later.

Not all that much to say here; it's a pretty standard Godzilla movie setup, just with Pacific Rim characters and robots. And the execution is decent enough.

Verdict: Keeping.
  1. Nothing against Christian themes and imagery - see: the Stone Gryphon series - but I tend not to like warping existing spiritualisms towards Christianity.

To be fair, it's pretty clear that the Light Side of the Force has some nasty side effects too, they're just subtler. Honestly, the galaxy's probably a better place with virtually all force users wiped out.

I always thought the Force should be like yin and yang

Too much of either is a bad thing

The Datk side of the Force has things such as hate and fear but it also has good things like righteous anger and passion and love

Light side of the force has calm and serenity but it also becomes apathy if too much

All things need balanced

Too much of either is bad

I'm pretty sure that that's canonically bullshit*; prequel-era Jedi's issues are IIRC more the institution being set in its ways and poilitically entangled, though it's admittedly been a while since I've watched the prequels.

*Disclaimer: Some random EU stuff somewhere probably contradicts this. Could swear one of the other SW threads had a post on two sides Vs Dark being corruption of Force, I'll see if I can dig it out and link.

That's not what it was originally intended as. The Dark Side was the imbalance

Horribly stunted emotional capacity. The light side of the force operates by suppressing emotions. This is BAD for you. There are entire psychological disorders that both cause and stem from doing this.
Completely untrue, with zero grounding in any sort of canon. There is nothing in Light Side use or Jedi orthodoxy that demands you suppress your emotions: only that you not let them control you. Did Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, or any of the Master's Council strike you as people who were constantly suppressing their emotions? When Obi-Wan yells at Anakin that they have to go after Dooku instead of making an irrational decision and run after Padme, does he strike you as a guy who's "suppressing his emotions?"

Okay, yeah, I kinda brought this on myself with touching upon this debate in the review, and I do like discussion on topics I touch on, but I've seen this book before. Its title is "Everyone dogpiles on Firehawk242 until I post the next review". So if everyone would kindly drop this and take it somewhere else, that'd be great.

No, the Jedi do that. Jedi =/= Light side
This is false, what the Jedi order asks is control of the emotions, not to suppress them.
No, that's how you use the light side of the force. The light side is all about emotional suppression. The dark side is letting your emotions run wild. Neither is healthy for the human mind, it's just that one breeds quiet sociopathy while the other breeds loud psychopathy.

Obi-Wan's... odd. He's one of those Jedi who's walked a bit closer to the dark side than most. In fact he's something of a rebel by jedi standards, what with his falling on love, having grudge matches, and having to put up with Anakin's bullshit. Not nearly as much as Qui-Gon was, mind you, but still definitely not orthodox. Mace Windu is another who was a bit on the grey side, possibly even more than Obi-Wan. Ki Adi Mundi, however? Not so much. Yoda? Prequel era, he's not precisely the most emotive.
