Squad 7 and their Accidental Instructor

By: OTT-False

This better not be another "gritty training fic".

Review:
On the plus side, it's not. On the downside, I really can't take this seriously, and it's not funny enough to just brush off as comedy. The misunderstanding that leads to Anko becoming Team 7's instructor just gets escalated past the point of absurdity, and I can't take it anymore.

Narnians Assemble!

Susan and Peggy go shooting; Peter and Steve walk into a bar; Crow, Spider, and Hawk fight the Cold War; Hulk like Lucy. Written for the 2012 Narnia Fic Exchange. AU for The Last Battle; also includes Marvel comics, Captain America: The First Avenger; and The Incredible Hulk 2008

Stone Gryphon + MCU? Yes, please!

Review:

Narnians, Unite! is easily divided into three parts. The first naturally jumps off from where Rat & Sword Go To War left off, with Peter and Susan in France fighting and simply tossing Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers into the mix. Simple, straightforward, reasonably satisfying. The second part is a good deal better, involving Edmund, now a full-time British spy, encountering Natasha Romanov over his many years of service, and eventually helping her defect from the Soviets. That one neatly ties in Edmund's own childhood betrayal into his motivations for arranging things.

But it's the last part that really elevates this entry, I think. That's Lucy's part, and it is delightful. Lucy kind of gets the short end of the stick of the Pevensie siblings in the mainline Stone Gryphon stories, which is sadly kind of inevitable. But this chapter perfectly nails Lucy, in my opinion. Constantly on the short list for the Nobel Peace Prize, intensely spiritual, still a wild, free spirit uncaring about standard propriety even at 75, and unfathomably empathetic and kind. It is a clinic on Lucy Pevensie character writing, and it's perfect for the Bruce and the Hulk.

Okay, seriously, what is it about this series that gets me gushing?

Verdict: Yes, keep!

What if Shirou had been raised by Old Man Henderson?

Ah, Old Man Henderson. An old, shitty Call of Cthulhu meme that inspired a rash of bad HFY. Back when I was a teenager, I thought that story was cool. Now, it's just another amusing example of the kind of shit tabletop gamers get up to.

Add in a "what if?" type of summary, and I am not looking forward to this.

Review:
This is just straight-up cringeworthy and invites all sorts of weird fridge logic about what the hell else Shirou does when he's not at home smoking weed and doing... other things.

Look, if you're that curious, it's 2000 words long, go read it. Just don't say I didn't warn you.

Verdict:

Nerve Damage

By: CrossyCross
Shirou converts his nerves into makeshift magic circuits everytime he needs to use magic. A human body has millions of nerves. A magus has on average twenty circuits...maybe he's on to something there...
Rated: Fiction M - English - Shirō E. - Chapters: 12 - Words: 84,601 - Reviews: 1,494 - Favs: 3,171 - Follows: 2,814 - Updated: Dec 22, 2012 - Published: Sep 18, 2012 - id: 8535914
Impressions before reading:
Yes, I know Nerve Circuits are, in fact, a terrible, awful idea. Just roll with it and let the fic have its unicorn and go with the execution. And by execution, I mean the fight scenes, because from what I remember of this fic those are going to make or break it.

Review:
Nerve Damage has... issues. Nasu purists hate it, I'm sure, for Shirou's mystery teacher, for a wide variety of small lore errors and author headcanons, for mucking about with Shirou's characterization, and of course, for raw "NERVE CIRCUITS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!!!" rage. More pertinent to my interests, the description is sparse, the narration flat and passive and riddled with small but annoying errors, and Shirou and his teacher tip dangerously close to Sue territory at times.

That said, none of this overly affected my ability to actually read the fic, and so my brain glossed over it in favor of popcorn-fic fun. That's the real draw of Nerve Damage: fun brawls between servants. Astoundingly, while Shirou and his four Sabers are overpowered, the fic quickly proves that they're not unstoppable once the new Servants are brought into play. One on one, there are a lot of overpowered Servants in this new Holy Grail War, ones that will individually give the Sabers trouble and that will most likely take opportunities to gang up on then.

Really, the fic adheres to a writing principle borrowed from a Pacific Rim/Mass Effect crossover that I find far more sensible than the old "Give Frodo a lightsaber, give Sauron a Death Star" principle that's floated around for a long time: Kaiju are not mooks. Or, in other words, don't turn the established antagonists into fodder.

Verdict: I enjoy this a lot, and that's all I need to keep it.

Four Teams

By: Racke
The Genin 12 all graduated in the same year; thus, they were all separated into different teams. Sakura is professional, Hinata wears sunglasses, Ino is NOT crushing, Tenten battles Konoha's insanity, and Kiba hates everyone.

A nice bit of humor.

Review:
So, just FYI, this fic puts Team Gai in the same graduating year as the rest of the genin.

Anyway, that one was at once sweet and hilarious, though I'm not fond of the sudden timeskip in the last chapter. Sweet mostly in the Team 8 (Choji/Ino/Naruto) interactions, and hilarious mostly in the Team 7 (Sasuke/Neji/Kiba) interactions. Curing neuroses by means of specific, targeted, bloody-minded spite!

Verdict: Keeper!

The Howling Wind
THW

By: JMenace
(Being rewritten) Naruto's chakra is warped at birth. Instead of strengthening his body and mind, it shrieks and wails like wind through his coils. Thrust into a war of ruthless shinobi and roaming Bijuu, he'll need the resolve to fight through his greatest weakness and survive- or, the determination to make it his greatest strength and win. (Lovecraftian AU)

Better known as "The Howling Wind", yet another fic I followed for a while before eventually dropping. I... don't actually remember much else.

Review:
I went into this reading with no expectations. Well, I expected it to be not very good. After all, I did end up dropping it back in the day.

Thankfully, I've been pleasantly surprised. This is definitely an AU, and not a divergence AU. Unlike the last time a Naruto fic went full AU on me, though (that Sakura Peggy Sue from way back when) this actually feels like a fully-realized AU instead of the author making things up just 'cause. The entire backstory and metaphysics of Bijuu are completely reworked here; for one thing, Naruto might be the only actual jinchuuriki in the world in this fic. Certainly Gaara, Fu, and probably B and Yagura aren't, and most of the Bijuu are known to be running around free. There are Bijuu cults, a Bijuu corps whose job is to fend them off when they wander near villages.

And that's just the Bijuu. The whole world is recognizably still Naruto, but it's radically changed in a wide variety of ways, and that shows in the narrative. No D-ranks, no Wave Arc, a radically different structure to the Chunin Exams - and most notably, very few of the canon villains. No sign of Zabuza, or Orochimaru, or most of Akatsuki. Even Tobi is thoroughly different. And it's all a good different, mind. This also means that I have no idea what the long-term plot is going to be, which is a pity, since it was looking very interesting and now I'll never find out.

Team dynamics are different, too. Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, while retaining core traits, are all wildly divergent from their canon selves. This patches up some of the original problems - Sasuke and Naruto get along quite well, for instance - while creating new ones, like Sakura's general reticence.

And then there's the whole business with some of the Nibi's chakra. Quick version: during Team 7's first mission, Sakura and Tenten (Team 9 coming along for supervision on their first C-rank) get cornered by a missing nin who does... something. Something that leaves a malignant presence in both of them. This is where the fic really demonstrates its Lovecraftian elements; several chapters are spent dealing with the whole mess, and JMenace leaves everything delightfully vague and half-explained. And that slow realization Naruto goes through of just how bad things are, culminating in Sakura sealing herself... oof, it's just a delightfully done bit of horror.

There are a few flaws, and the present-tense first person narrative is throwing off my writing, but overall this is an excellent fic.

Verdict: Yup, I'm keeping. Oh, and by the way, in the last chapter JMenace says he's posting a rewritten version, but that's a lie.

Want and Need
Want and Need by Kiiam reviews
How does the Grail choose a Master or a Servant? Fact of the matter is, it knows the difference between want and need. Masters of the Fourth Holy Grail War know they want a strong Servant, but the Grail knows the Servants they need.

Ah, yes. Who better to steer Kiritsugu off his destructive tendencies than a man who lived and breathed them and saw the results first-hand?

Review:
Well, I'm bored. Once again, we have a Fate/Zero AU that doesn't do enough early to take things off the rails. Damn dock fight...

More to the point, this goes full AU early, and I'm not sure I like the changes. A lot of them seem to be changes for the sake of changes; why ditch Tokiomi as a master and bring in a couple characters from Fate/Prototype? Why have Caren hanging around Kirei? For a fic that seems to be a divergence AU the reason for a lot of the changes sure seems to be "just because".

As well, I don't think many of the new master/servant dynamics work particularly well. Enkidu and Waver kinda works, but Kayneth/Iskander is just plain dysfunctional.

And, well, again, I'm bored and starting to skim things. Granted, this reread took a while to get off the ground and was constantly shelved for other reading, but that's an indictment all on its own.

Blargh. Sorry for such a lackluster review after all this time.

The Somewhat Cracked Mind of Uchiha Itachi
The Somewhat Cracked Mind of Uchiha Itachi

Hmm. Is this one of the Hokage!Itachi fics floating around? Well, even if it's not, this promises comedy, so I expect some good comedy.

Don't let me down, fic.

Review:
It's let me down.

For one, it's just not very funny. It's silly, but silly doesn't always equal funny, such as in this case. At least it's not the stupid kind of silly, else I'd have punted it off even harder.

And sadly, the fic doesn't offer a whole lot else. Nothing positive, at least. There's the usual spread of annoying fanon, and overall it just feels like another bland, derivative AU training fic. I've seen enough of those for one damn lifetime.

Really, I think that's the biggest problem. So much of this is just shit I've seen before. The steaming dumps taken on the Academy training curriculum; potshots at Naruto's childhood living arrangements; and it's just so... devoid of stakes. And as I said earlier in this blurb, it's not funny to compensate.

Sequel to Little Moments. Ben and Gwen explore their new relationship and try to adjust to a normal life even as enemies old and new hunt for them. Under revision. I've added to the first three chapters and cleaned up the fourth so far.

To recap: Little Moments ended with Ben and Gwen traumatized pretty badly and Ben without the Omnitrix.

Taking bets to see how long that lasts!

Review:
Fics dying just as they get to the good part REEEEEEEEEEEEEE-

I'm good. I'm good. Okay, to start, this fic is much more blatant about the actual shippy stuff than its predecessor. Fair warning. Honestly, I appreciate how fumbling and awkward it is. There's a strong focus on the fact that Ben and Gwen are really, truly growing up in the early chapters.

And then a Heatblast alien crash-lands in a field and the primary conflict pops in just long enough to be intriguing before the fic dies. *sighs* Ah well, it was good enough while it last.

Verdict: What the heck, I'll keep it.

The Unsuspecting side of the Force

By: Tsu Doh Nimh
A companion fic to "The Havoc side of the Force". Extra scenes and different perspectives from that story.

The Havoc Side of the Force from the perspective of the Star Wars natives.

Review:
Frankly, I think "Havoc side" and "Unsuspecting side" would work better together than separated like this. Harry's perspective is limited, and while that makes for a tighter story and some interesting misinterpretations, it also untethers the story from the broader Star Wars part and mutes the delicious, delicious reactions and response to the walking OCP that Harry is, and is half the reason I read stories like it at all. Conversely, Unsuspecting doesn't stand as a story on its own at all. It depends on the reader having read Havoc, and taken on its own its disjointed as hell.

Put together, though, and not only do I get those glorious reactions and responses, we also get a more complete picture of how much of a goddamn wrecking ball Harry is being towards the Prequel timeline.

Verdict: And it's for those reasons that it stays.

A Brilliant Solution

Alternate versions of humanity infest the Mass Effect fanfic scene like so many lice. Most of them are bad HFY stompfests. This one, as I recall, is one of the better ones, as humanity isn't even united here.

Review:
Mm. Well, it's not as bad as the worst of the HFY infesting this fandom, but the whole setup does raise a few eyebrows. This humanity is, despite years of civil war and no more time to develop technologically than the canon Systems Alliance, is essentially running Mass Effect 3-era tech compared to standard Mass Effect 1-era tech. The infrared stealth is notable in this regard; the use of AI can at least be handwaved by humanity not having the ingrained anti-AI taboo of the Citadel species.

Then there are the fleet numbers. For the size of the Citadel alliance, the fleet sizes cited seem too small by... oh, a few orders of magnitude. And yes, I understand the necessity of humanity actually being able to contribute, but you don't need to utterly nerf Citadel fleet sizes in the process. Never underestimate what a fresh fleet applied at the right spot can do, even generally much larger fleet sizes in-theater.

Now, this wouldn't be so bad if there was more meat to this story. But as it stands, it barely gets through the setup and has one space battle that is seriously lacking in detail. Simply put, there's just not a whole lot to interest me here.

When the Tides Come In

[Discontinued] The Marines are losing a war that will change the world. As a last resort, they turn to the brilliant Vegapunk to solve their problems. So, obviously, he decides to summon the strongest man in the world ... from an alternate universe, that is. They did NOT expect Monkey D. Luffy to fall through the wormhole. This combines two of the One Piece fandoms big premises: how badass Luffy would be as the actual Pirate King, and Marine!Luffy, which has actual canon support in the form of Garp's desires.

And then combine the two in a pseudo-crossover? Yes, please.

Review:

Yeah, that's all this is. Just... not bad. The biggest problem, I think, is that this doesn't really capture the tone of One Piece, a soaring, zany epic of grand adventure and truckloads of unrepressed emotion. Maybe I've just been spoiled by some of the more recent One Piece fics I've read, but this just doesn't capture that One Piece feel.

Otherwise, this is a darn solid story. Seeing Luffy just do Luffy things in a world that is so not prepared for him is nice and cathartic. And the fic does do a decent job in this regard: Luffy does what Luffy wants, no matter how idiotic it seems, and by this point in his journey he's strong enough to get away with it.

And yet, not invincible. Catch him on his guard and you're in for a bad time, but Marine!Luffy dealt him a bullet wound that hampers him for half the story, solely because he let down his guard and didn't see it coming. It's also nice to see the AU changes stemming from Luffy being a Marine. Mostly bad, unfortunately.

Verdict: Yeah, I'll keep it.

Nanoha Takamachi and the School of Witchcraft

By: Ryvaken Lucius Tadrya

On the one hand, yay, another Lyrical Nanoha crossover! Never enough of those. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure this is the one where Nanoha is a student at Hogwarts instead of a teacher. Boo!

Review:
Yuuuuup. Nanoha and Fate at Hogwarts. *sighs*

Now, I'll give the fic points for resisting the urge to stick Nanoha and Fate into Gryffindor. They're in Ravenclaw, which is a good fit for them. I'll subtract points for Fate and Nanoha's presence basically meaning Hermione never becomes friends with Ron and Harry. And, of course, sticking to the Stations of Canon like glue. And then more points for actually writing Dumbledore well.

Otherwise, this is just a fairly standard Year One Harry Potter fic, just with some first contact stuff tacked on. And not even that much First Contact stuff, it's mostly just more Hogwarts shenanigans.

On the plus side, it actually held my attention and was mildly entertaining, so while there's not a whole lot of substance I did enjoy it.

Verdict: Ah, what the hell. Keep.

Unfortunately, it didn't actually go beyond the first couple of chapters of year 2, so :V

Huh, I remember reading both of those fics, and not being particularly impressed. Not bad, but I didn't finish them, even back then. Kinda surprised you didn't kick them off, given that you did remove at least a few I consider better.

I wonder. MGLN is more or less Hufflepuff The Anime, even most asshole-type villains are Hufflepuff material.
...
Well, at least it's not putting Fate in Slytherin like some fics do...

But she wearz blaaack!1111
Really, Nanoha or Hayate fit in Slytherin. They have ambition.
Hayate being tanuki she is will fit swimmingly (though not necessarily with current crowd, whenever that "current" is). Nanoha... barely fit despite that "ambition" thing, like Pettigrew on Griffindor - "barely enough pass". That said both are "barely enough pass" for Ravenclaw too, neither in "keeper of knowledge", nor "seeker of new" way, they have good "study habits" but more of Hufflepuff "hard work" work way. Out of first two seasons one who would fit good in Ravenclaw would probably be Yuuno, but Yuuno in fanfic? naaah! Even if it would've been funny to have all four covered (which is proper way to do "infiltration mission" (TM) too).
