Rose's Rowdies by BryonNightshade

Ruby Rose, the leader of Rose's Rowdies, is an unusual mercenary: she has high ethical standards; a tendency to go hungry for upholding said high standards; and the scariest forty tons of Battlemech on any battlefield she joins. Unfortunately for her and the Rowdies, these qualities draw the attention of ComStar, the galactic communications monopoly, and pull them into a long-running struggle straight out of a fairy tale.

Or, strapping our heroines into big stompy robots and seeing what happens.
Well, this is a neat little crossover. So far BryonNightshade is batting very, very well when it comes to writing Team RWBY, because he does an excellent job slotting the Team RWBY characters into the Battletech universe in ways that make sense with their existing characters. Ruby as the latest in a long-lived Mechwarrior family with a fancy Star League mech? That tracks. Raven now being a pirate? Yup. Blake being a Canopian spy? Honestly, makes far too much sense. Weiss being a product of a Lyran mining magnate family? Abso-fucking-lutely. And the fic uses these differences and adaptations to drive their characters.

On a related note, I need to remember that Weiss logically knows a lot about rocks.

In turn, the plot is also pure RWBY adapted to Battletech. Ozpin and Salem are still running things from the shadows - via Comstar. And I appreciate that it's a very self-contained story that also contains a decent amount of stompy robot action, with actual styles and tactics. Like I said, it's just a good short fic.

on brotherhood

LadyCrimsonAndBlack

The one in which Whitebeard Pirates meet Ace's big brother, and it goes... not as expected. To be fair, though, very few things involving Luffy ever do.

(Or, Role Reversal AU, where Luffy is the elder brother.)
Oh, I like this. I like this a lot. That moment when Luffy learns that Ace is on the Moby Dick, and Marco is just about shitting his pants at the thought of having to fight the Straw Hats right as they've insinuated themselves into the heart of the ship. The subtle hints at how the Straw Hats' adventures have gone so differently and yet, in all the ways that matter, so very much the same. Ace's daddy issues running headlong into Luffy's subtle art of not giving a fuck. Oh, it's so good, I'd love to see more of this AU.

You're on the list.

I really liked Rose's Rowdies. It's a well written and self-contained stompy mech story, and it also really gets Ruby's personality in the later seasons - the way she's burdened by leadership but feels a responsibility to use her power for good.

Sixty-Second Chance + hello, i love you, won't you tell me your name + The Fifth Migration New

Sixty-Second Chance (KanColle 2077)

By: totallynotabrony

Humanity fought the Abyssal War in the 2010s, with the help of shipgirls from the 1940s. Now the Abyssals are back, and shipgirls from the 2010s are getting their chance.
Spoiler alert: we're going to be getting to another, later Kancolle fic by the same author. It's much better than this one, thank God, because this one pratfalls straight out of the gate.

For one, it needs to be denser. The opening two chapters are light on description, both of the surroundings and on emotions and thoughts. It leads to problems with geography, and also renders things flat and bland without any real emotional description to spice things up. The fact that the Abyss has basically taken over the Arctic thanks to global warming melting everything merits zero mention by Chancellorsville, which makes no sense at all. As well, the subject matter of much of those chapters aren't terribly interesting: the first is all transit to a military base, the second is Ajax and Chancellorsville having a frightfully dull conversation about what the missile cruiser wants to do next.

Blagh. You're not on the list.

hello, i love you, won't you tell me your name

perzimon (baaljuice)

Keith's human enough to have wisdom teeth and unlucky enough to need them extracted. The team despairs.
This fic also fucking sent me. Keith has amnesia as a side effect of being high as a kite for wisdom tooth extraction and is also just down atrocious for Shiro. The shit he says is just out of fucking pocket, it's hilarious.

You're on the list.

Fifth Migration

Insp. by a prompt released by @swpromptsandasks | swmoddy: How about an AU where the Sith's Grand Plan accounted for everything -everything that is, except the fact that the Jedi temple is actually an very ancient spacecraft and the second word got to the Jedi about there being clones on Kamino, all Jedi are called back inside and they take off immediately? Just imagine the dear chancellor's face…
Oh, the look on Palpatine's face when the Temple just... lifts off and departs. Priceless.

I remember reading a bit of that before dropping it a few years back. Isn't that the one where Chancellorville awakens after a nuclear strike on city and gets told by Ajax they can't strike back against the Abyssals because the latter has nukes or something?

That and the entire cyberpunk set up makes me realize that Kancolle at it's core can slowly become a grimdark setting if it wants to buy sheer fact of the Abyssal War continuing...forever.
