Crimson Aria (Arpeggio of Blue Steel)

Fair enough. I understand that Fog ships are in no way reflective of their historical antecedents. However that would also apply to the sailing habits of Augusta and the luck of poor Porter. They just seem to be uncannily parallel, thus inspiring the comment about Washington in relation to SoDak. I ALSO doubt that Washington will lose a Mental Model overboard...

One other note: What is going on with Quincy?

Well iirc some things are based off the ships. Kongo's apprentice for example is due to the fact that she was historically built in the UK - hence the dressed, blonde hair etc.

And what sailing habits of the Augusta?

As noted near the beginning of this story where Richardson wonders why Augusta isn't off the Moroccan Coast (Seemingly making reference to Operation Torch, including the presence of battleship Massachusetts.). Augusta notes that she WAS assigned there but transferred out.

Ah... right

One other thought: Does anyone suppose that PO Richardson is related to Admiral James O. Richardson, who was fired from command for arguing over moving the Pacific Fleet to Pearl Harbor from San Diego? My suspicious eyes just keep seeing patterns repeating themselves...

It occurs to me that this doesn't explain why Haruna is blond.

Ark Performance probably decided to take the "sister" thing and apply Kongo's western appearance to the whole Kongo-class.

He was also the original commander of the USS Augusta...

.... well Haruna and Kirashima are both Kongo-Class so maybe... umm IDK

maybe the artist has a thing for blondes?

Or maybe they have a thing for blond twintails? :V

For the love of twintails is the strongest passion there is!

(that anime is so stupid, yet so epic)

Well IIRC in the manga (which seems to be the basis for this fic) Maya is not an illusion.... but I see your point.
Watching and rewatching the anime... I don't know. I get the feeling that 400 and 402 LIED to Kongo. Rather they waited for Kongo to be preoccupied with 401 and then shut down Maya's Mental Model and swapped it out for a dummy program. It's a cold blooded, calculating move but Maya's behaviors prior are simply too complex to replicate by AIs who have no comprehension of emotion.

Maya expresses hate at Takao for blocking her attack. She is able to EXPLAIN an emotional concept to 401 (In a childlike manner but still...) to Iona. She exhibits enthusiasm. play, curiosity. All to fool Kongo? Not too likely.

Consider: They believe that Kongo may be tainted. IF (for sake of argument) Maya had a true Mental Model as well, that would also be likely be true of Maya also. it is safer to deal with Maya first and cut out Kongo's most loyal subordinate rather than try to deal with Kongo AND Maya at the same time.

It is reasonable to hope that somewhere awaiting discovery is Maya's real core.

And the whole thing shows just how bad the twins (400 and 402) miscalculated. The replacement of Maya's program went smooth and made sure that it was easier to subdue Kongo in the short term, but that very mockery of Kongo's attachment to Maya is what pushed Kongo over the edge. Had the twins actually bested Iona, you can be sure that Kongo would have killed them in the most vicious manner she could. Not just like stopping a disease. (Which she believes that Gunzou is and Iona is a carrier) But vengeful malice. *shiver*
