Crimson Aria (Arpeggio of Blue Steel)

The railroad network extends just south of Mexico.

Beyond there, you have a few two-lane roads as far south as the canal (with highways near cities).

There are currently two bridges across the canal with a third under construction.

There is NOTHING south of the general canal area.

The Darien Gap has, at MOST, a rough hiking trail or two. Not even jeeps can pass through into Colombia.

Of course, a railroad has been proposed as far as Panama, and in this scenario an extension through to South America is conceivable, but it would be rough.

Granted, the story is set about... forty years in the future, so it's possible that the transport situation changed since then.

Yeah, the only absolutely safe way to transport people into the South America and vice versa would be to transport them by road. And there would be, what, only three roads crossing the channel?

And airlifting personnel through Panama's airspace might be hazardous due to the Fog presence in the ocean.

US: *calls Sea Bees and Army Corp* ... I need some roads.... through the amazon.

Engineers: on it.

*later*

Sarge... those girls... they've just been watching us work.

Likely just a local - don't worry about it, haven't had any trouble here.

Tuscaloosa ... don't you think its interesting how the humans change their environment to make up for their own short comings?

Frankly I would of thought digging a canal through a continent was insane Exeter.... yet they did that without a tenth of the equipment they use now to build these roads.

... you just want to watch them blow stuff up don't you?

*nods*

True, but there are major environmental factors for not breaching the Darien Gap-its rainforests, and it serves as a critical disease break-various illnesses don't cross over readily.

However, I would expect the FERISTSA to be built, at least.

The Amazon would be a whole additional side-project to deal with, and we'd have to work with Brazil.

Also, I don't think we'd be building canals there.

Hidden shipyards up-river, maybe, but not canals.

the MM's were kinda putting the Panama Canal alongside the current road creation operations.... history is new for them :p

????

There's already a road and railroad paralleling the canal. Quite good ones in fact. Any new road construction would be well away from the canal.

Yes I know

I assume the two MM's are commenting on road work going through Central America to support US peace keeping operations and how the humans are doing something insane.

it was a spur of the moment line it may not make total sense!!!

There was that idea on creating an underground global rapid transit system which allows transport to reach London from New York in three minutes. Supposedly works like a pendulum. I forgot what it was called or where the original article was. Google doesn't help either. Maybe you can use that to amaze the MM's.

Thanks but that wasn't it. The article said it was like a vac -train using magnetic repulsions but instead of an underground straight line linking directly to UK, it was shaped like a V. So the transport is dropping to the center of the earth, using gravity to further accelerate. Once it hit the lowest part of the tunnel, it would start to move back up towards it's destination where in this case gravity helps slow it down.

???

How would THAT work?

1) drilling down just makes it harder

2) there's a limit to gravitational acceleration

2) there's a limit to gravitational acceleration

1) It was a purely theoretical article talking about the next type of rapid transportation and how it works. It doesn't explain how they were going to make it.

2 According to the article, it's a vacuum tube using electrical magnetic propulsion system with gravity help boosting the acceleration.

Edit: It's all pure theory but people have been known to make theory a reality. I just thought the MM's would be amazed if it worked. And since they were to take over the oceans, I don't think they would stop something like that from being built.

The tube is naturally buoyant so it would float upwards. It would be anchored to the sea bed by two cables in an upside down V shape. I guess that's where the pendulum comment comes in.

As a new fan of Blue Steel, I'm eagerly awaiting the next update on this fic. Richelieu had better hope she didn't do anything more than scuff the paint on Dakota or battleship Washington is liable to sail right over and reduce Richelieu to a junkyard craft project. Washington probably never will be great pals with SoDak but NO ship puts a dent on SoDak without getting painfully hurt.

French Toast anyone?

Welcome to the Fandom!

I thought I should note: Relationships between fog ships are not necessarily based on the relationships of the human ships that they emulate (no, Fog ships are NOT the same ships resurrected-that's a common mistake in the fandom).

Also, I feel that it is inappropriate to italicize the names of fog ships. These are people, after all. And we want to distinguish them from their human counterparts.

In the series it seems the groupings are based off real life groups..

IE... Prince of Wales, Repulse and Vampire were all in Task Force Z

now SoDak's group is not based on any real life group but then again Task Force Crimson seems to have been made as a Special Investigation group of some sort...

Only to a limited extent:

Kongo certainly seems to be in a different position compared to IRL.

And that's not even getting into Hyuuga, which was NEVER a flagship during WWII.

Fair enough. I understand that Fog ships are in no way reflective of their historical antecedents. However that would also apply to the sailing habits of Augusta and the luck of poor Porter. They just seem to be uncannily parallel, thus inspiring the comment about Washington in relation to SoDak. I ALSO doubt that Washington will lose a Mental Model overboard...

One other note: What is going on with Quincy?

Rear Admiral John W. Wilcox jr. was washed overboard from his flagship USS Washington on 27 March, 1942. Ironically, command of Washington's TF was taken over by Rear Admiral Griffen in USS Wichita.
