HOLY SHEET 3 months. I'm horrible...
---
"The fleet has changed since your little... banishment, Augusta," Renown explained as she poured her guests another glass of tea, "Things were simpler before we had these bodies, you know? We just followed orders. Now... well, we still get the orders, but how we follow them is open to interpretation."
"Fighting among the ranks?" Richardson asked as he accepted the offered cup of tea.
"Oh, we know how to handle that," Renown replied, "As Augusta and I show, the Fleet has means of dealing with disagreements," the Battlecruiser took a sip of her tea before continuing, "what the fleet is less used to is full-out betrayal."
"Are you suggesting that somebody is acting against The Code?" Augusta asked, a hint of incredulity in her voice.
"Somebody vanished my ship near Brazil," Renown replied calmly, "And it sure as hell wasn't the humans," the mental model turned to Richardson, "No offense."
"None taken," Richardson replied with a shrug, "There's maybe one record of humans ever getting a hold of a Fog Ship, I think? And I'm pretty sure it was the ship's idea. But you're asking the wrong question."
Renown arched an eyebrow at that, "Oh?"
"You don't need to ask who vanished your ship," Richardson explained, "Thats not important. What's important is why. Why would a Fog ship take out another fog ship?"
"A question you are very interested in learning yourself, no?" Renown replied as she leaned back in her chair.
"Our initial assumption was that the attack was due to Richardson's presence," Augusta said, "But if you've been targeted then something else is afoot."
"It could be anything," Renown replied, "Special Operations, or perhaps re-allocating resources; If a fleet needed spare nanomaterial, I have little doubt they'd consider reprocessing my fleet a worthwhile trade. Perhaps some form of disease is spreading through the fleet and they're culling infected ships."
"Would they keep that sort of thing secret?" Richardson asked, surprised. He wasn't even aware a Fog ship could get sick.
Renown raised an eyebrow as she answered the human, "The same reason your government would hide something – to maintain order. The point is that we don't have enough information to know what's going on."
"Too many variables and complications," Richardson said as he nodded in agreement. Not just his involvement, but two groups considered 'navis non grata' made the situation decidedly non-standard.
"Which is why you can get more data while finding my little destroyer," Renown replied with a smile as she poured herself some more tea, "That is, assuming you still wish to stay here," Renown paused as she glanced up at the pair, "That is what you were coming her for, yes?"
Richardson sighed, "That was the plan. I guess this is rent?"
"Exactly so," Renown replied with a small smirk, "I suppose Augusta wouldn't have kept you around if you were stupid..."
"I assume you have a more specific target for us?" Augusta cut in, "since not even you would think of something like this without a lead."
"Of course not," Renown replied as she took a sip of her tea, "When was the last time you were in Rio?"
"There was a training conference down there about..." Richardson started, before he noticing Renown wasn't actually looking at him, "...right."
"I was off the coast a year and a half back while targeting launches out of Alacantra," Augusta replied, raising an eyebrow, "you think your destroyer is somewhere off the coast of Rio?"
"No," Renown replied with a shake of her head before smirking, "I think my destroyer is somewhere in Rio."
Richardson and August both stared at Renown in silence. After a moment, Richardson finally managed to reply, "You think somebody is hiding a destroyer... in the city?"
"Yes," Renown replied simply, "specifically, their core – none of my long-range scans have detected a ship-sized mass in the waters off the coast despite the fact that my destroyers last known position was of the Brazilian coast."
"I assume," Augusta said, "that you have a reason to suspect Rio?"
"Its the only fortified port near the last known position," Renown explained calmly, "But that isn't your biggest problem."
Richardson raised an eyebrow, "What is our biggest problem?"
"Patrols in that sector have tripled since my ship vanished," Renown explained, "On both sides – the Fog vessels are mostly Para class – their IFF codes ID them as operating under Minas Geraes."
"And on the other side?" Richardson asked. He had the feeling that he wouldn't like the answer.
"Ship wise?" Renown replied, "Very little – though within the harbor they've been drilling, mostly in corvettes. The real activity is with their UAV's zipping up and down the coastline. Still, it is odd..."
Augusta raised an eyebrow, "How so?"
"The UAV's haven't been touched," Renown said with a shrug, "despite being in visual range of each other. Standard protocol-"
"-Is for you guys to shoot them down," Richardson finished for her with a sigh, "General Atomics love that, by the way," Richardson leaned back in his chair, "You have any idea why'd they change their SOP?"
"Not particularly," Renown replied simply, "Do you?"
"A couple," Richardson replied, "And none of them are pretty."
"What are you thinking, Richardson?" Augusta asked.
"First possibility," Richardson said, holding up a finger, "The fleet has gotten arrogant – indicative of just how far your psychological development has progressed, but doesn't explain the increase in patrols. Second possibility," he held up another finger, "They're trying to keep something in the harbor. What, I have no idea. And the third possibility..." Richardson trailed off as he let his hand drop.
"The third possibility is what?" Renown asked.
"The third possibility," Richardson replied, "Is that the Fog is helping to keep things out."
"Helping?" Augusta echoed back, "Helping who?"
"The Brazilian Navy," Richardson replied with a shrug, "Who else?"
"You think the Brazilians convinced a portion of the Fog to work for them?" Augusta asked. The doubt was obvious in her voice.
"I think its the other way around," Richardson said, "I think the Fog convinced the Brazilian Navy to work for them. Wouldn't be the first time we suspected this sort of thing. What do you think-" Richardson paused as he turned to Renown and noticed she was sitting very still, her eyes shut and her face earily calm, "Renown?"
"Don't mind me," Renown replied placidly, "But it seems your Flagship is currently trying to hack me."
