I find Imperial Guard regiments to be so much more amusing, in the diversity they offer.
So, another roll that isn't completely straightforward:
10: mixed regiment
40: feral world
97: temperate
19: infantry regiment
7: ranged combat
1: overzealous
97, dice rolled two more times: 80: gangers & 95: convicts
8: standard conscription
64: augmented troops
36: adeptus mechnanicus
17: Orks
Let's see what we can come up with...
Taranis Sector's Legions of Redemption
"Give me your criminals, your scum,
Your crazed masses yearning to break free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming streets.
Send these, the hopeless, the wretched to me,
They will serve the Golden Throne!"
-- writing inscribed under a statue of the Emperor in the planetary astroport of Pavonis Secundus
The Taranis sector, in the Segmentum Tempestus, is unusual compared to the rest of the Imperium, in that for the last three thousand years, it has handled the tithe-mandated creation of Imperial Guard regiments at the sector scale and not at the planetary scale.
Through a sector-wide alliance, each-world is mandated to regularly give as a tithe the worst criminal elements of their society, which are then shipped to Pavonis Secundus, a temperate world in the Pavonis system, home of Pavonis Prime, the sector's Forge World.
There, the gangers and criminals are sorted in order of physical and mental fitness, the worst elements being quickly recycled as servitors and/or organ banks, the rest being sorted as regular and shock troops. Both groups then undergo, under the expert hands and mecha-dendrites of the Mechanicus, a thorough brainwashing regimen turning them in extremely disciplined and overzealous soldiers.
The exact procedure is jealously kept a secret by the Adeptus Mechanicus, but what is known is that at the end of it, the future soldiers will have lost their old personalities and been sterilized, and will see their bodies laced with a number of augmentics supposed to increase their speed, agility, strength and overall endurance.
They are then subjected to several years of intensive training in the vast training grounds that is the planet, before being shipped to the rest of the Imperium to sustain its never-ending campaigns as combat-ready units.
Since their creation, the Redemption Legions have been mostly used against the Orks infesting the sector and the neighboring ones, their help being greatly appreciated, commanders having numerous times been surprised by the sheer zeal the Legions put at fighting the enemies of the Imperium.
The standard Redemption Legion is a Regiment of 5,000 soldiers cut into four 1,250 soldiers Battalions:
- A Mechanized Infantry Battalion, equipped mostly with Chimera troop transports and manned with Shock Troops
- An Armor Battalion, equipped with Sentinel walkers and Leman Russ tanks
- An Artillery Battalion, equipped with Basilisk self-propelled artillery and other artillery pieces
- And an HQ/Logistical Battalion, equipped with among other things logistical and engineering vehicles, with organically attached techpriests tasked with repairing the equipment damaged in battle.
The Legions put a high emphasis on movement and ranged engagements, using their usually superior mobility to disengage from melee and draw the enemy into an arranged killzone for the artillery. This doesn't stop them from being trained, able and ready to fix the bayonets and engage in a brawl if they needed to, for the Glory of the Emperor (and the Omnissiah...).
The principal menace against the Legions, however, is internal: The unusual circumstances surrounding their creation often draw the attention of the Administratum and the Inquisition, and it is always a hard and perilous game that must be played by the Taranis Sector to keep its traditions; traditions which have allowed each of the sectors world to instead concentrate on building their own Planetary Defense Forces.
The Sector has, coincidentally, been one of the most peaceful in the Imperium for the last three thousand years, boasting zero chaotic incursion, and no planet lost to the enemies of the Imperium in that timespan.
