Command: Modern Air & Naval Operations: Let's Play and Expansions

Lord High Admiral poaw: "Gentlemen! We have successfully landed our first amphibious units in Chad!"

High Command: "................HOW?!"

This is going to somehow end with peace in the Asia Pacific region.

Mostly because everyone else is either dead or too busy fighting the Rouge Chinese Admiral.

Watch as this turns out to actually be a US carrier group that's just pretending to be Indian.

Or that every ship the Indians have has been modified to launch aircraft.

Does C:MAaNO allow for VBSaS?

In which case, I'd expect an epic scale VBSaS wherein the Indian carrier air group is acquired.

Ugh, some new C:MANO scenario designers get in waaaay over their heads. I'm not talking about simple streamlining mistakes like using a ton of multi-unit airfields when single-unit ones would do the job, or thematic ones like technothriller-supervillain setups and ahistorical loadouts. Those are more forgivable than jumping right in with a huge WWIII-level clash with their first scenario.

Granted, this is my bias at work. Partly because of technical limitations and partly because I don't want a scenario to spiral out of control like poaw's unlamented original AirSea Battle one did, my scenarios have ranged from moderately small to very small. But when I see a scenario where the setup is a limited strike on North Korea and the actual scenario is a huge mess with 3,000 units and action up and down the entire peninsula, I still get annoyed.

吸血鬼之舞

My opening gambit failed. I exchanged 1:1 with the Indians on fighters, but my missiles missed their AEW helo. I failed to shut off their scouting and paid the price as they immediately launched an attack with fixed wing aircraft and sub-launched ASCMs.

This attack was terrifying for several reasons, but mainly my lack of familiarity of with Chinese weapon systems.

Each SAG is comprised of a handful of ships, but only one really capable (in the American sense) AAW shooter. The other ships are basically floating magazines for it's radars and datalinks. Therein lies the problem: "Alpha Whiskey" "the brain" "prime" "one-eyed man" (in the land of the blind he is King), only has so many illuminators and datalinks. I'm used to being able to loft missiles from a loooooong way off (50 - 70nmi) at the incoming while simultaneously punishing the launching aircraft if they have to come in close (if not outright preventing their launches). With the Chinese I'm committed to only 4 targets at once, so they can coast in and come much closer to saturating my defenses. That's the "Jason" part of the terror of their attack.

The other part is the Brahmos missile. It's fear with a rocket motor.

It's long-range (160nmi), fast (1450kts) and has an anti-radiation seeker head to backup it's active radar seeker. It takes the issues with time to engage/time to kill and compresses them (greatly). It's the Freddy Krueger that doesn't just haunt my dreams, it makes me afraid to dream begin with.

Alterations to the plan: I have to swing wide to the west to get that forward Indian SAG off my missile attack's bearing line. For reasons of detection and raid attrition. Also these attacks may represent the Indians shooting their load, so I may be able to move my own attack in real close to increase it's effectiveness (less time to engage with defensive missiles, my own shipboard ECM supporting the raid). Like the Israelis against the Egyptians.

This is how the attacks (notice the plural) turned out:

My forward group of shooters was sunk. Overwhelming saturation attacks claimed them once they ran out of missiles to shoot them down. I thought I had killed the last wave with four whole missiles to spare ("gee golly!"). Then another wave appeared 2 minutes later...

Lucky, I was able to spot it early enough to mitigate some of the damage. IE I was able to get their AShMs off their rails. All 32 of them. So I have at least 64 fewer defensive missiles to worry about, and even managed to claim a single FFG. The major victory was, when my missiles were detected the ENTIRE Indian fleet started illuminating, allowing me to pick out the CV in the middle of their formation. This means instead of having to pick between 3 probables with my newly reduced missile stockpiles I now can send all my combat power in a single decapitating strike. It also means I can focus my anti-radiation missiles on the most capable AAW platforms they have. For icing on the cake they've fired 112 AShMs so far, so their offensive magazines have to be running out....

How many Brahmos have they expended?

52
The other 60 are an even-ish split between Sizzlers and Grizzlies.

Color me surprised, indeed that escalated quickly

So, you've claimed a victory by getting shot so many times they ran out of missiles. Wasn't that Zap Brannigan's strategy?
Technically, I guess, you could win the scenario by forcing the Indians to return to home port to restock munitions as long as they don't manage to sink the Chinese CV.
