Command: Modern Air & Naval Operations: Let's Play and Expansions

Are the Exocets the latest version that can do land attack? If so, could you try to take out the last heavy radar installation with them to open the way?

The ones on the ship are, but I'm pretty sure that radar you see is no longer operative. Nor is it a radar installation. It's one of those shitty Sa-3 sites that I've already trashed.

About the Algerian Navy, midair refueling in this game is quite user unfriendly. I mean it requires legitimate micromanagement. Grouping tankers mean that any aircraft attempting to refuel only draw from one of the tankers in the group until it's exhausted, at which point they go on their merry way, even if they only have 3 minutes of fuel left. If you split the tankers, your aircraft will only use one tanker until it's exhausted, then go on their merry way. So in order to get those Rafales out there, I had to manually break the 10 Rafales into 5 pairs and manually control the tanker operation. Twice. One way.

Anyway I made it, this is the attack:

Edit: Here's the aftermath. I held back 2 Exocets from each sub to make follow up attacks so I'm gonna do that. Push come to shove, I move in with torpedoes (I don't want to use torpedoes).

Four kills? Nice job! What are the survivors? Koni, Nanuchka, one of each?
Yeah.

JK my follow up attack sunk those too. My only problem is the Algerians have launched 34 fighters in response, and my Rafales (ten of them) need to refuel. I don't have enough fuel to dogfight these guys (not to mention the lack of long range missiles, and lack of quantity of missiles), and I can't afford to lose my tankers either.

I'm scrambling my Mirages to cover, but they don't have the range to burn down there so it'll be awhile.

Why not nuke their airbases as well?

and maybe a port or 2.

I decided to use my land-based Rafales to clear the AAA around the objective along with a few to escort them and clear out some of the Algerian AF. This was a mistake.

As soon as I got near and had the bombers drop down to look around I it triggered a response by the Algerian fighters. A few come up like I expect, then as soon as my fighters kill a couple...

ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE

What you're looking at is about 25 fighters who have driven my aircraft out of Algerian air space, shot down a few of my planes, and have detected my ships which lead to an attack by 2 Sizzler missiles. They are currently burning out towards my tankers and AEW aircraft in order to inflict losses that I can not afford, while my hastily launched alert fighters burn to intercept them. Riveting stuff. The only problem is, even though they're as yet undetected I don't think I can stop the Algerians from killing my tankers and AWACs. My Pk so far has been about .3, the fighters I have coming don't have 75 missiles between them...such excitement.

Also:
My low-level passes revealed the presence of about a company of tanks and mechanized infantry. If I try to dash in and pull out the hostages, the armor will crew up my helicopters while exposed. I can send in attack helicopters with hellfires to try to clear them, but I only have 2 of those, and there are a whole lot of vehicles. That's without taking into consideration the Algerian AF and their fighters, who apparently are obviously members of the Not Fucking Around Crew.

As soon as I get something resembling a fighter sweep this not fucking around thing is gonna go two ways.

The clear solution is to rig your tankers with nukes and offer them up as a sacrifice to eliminate the Algerian fighters.

DO EEEEEEET

YOU KILLED THE DUCKS, HOW AWFUL

and a second tanker point will bring it into Syrian radar coverage

Wow, the mess-ups have already started. You somehow managed to order your aircraft onto the wrong side of the Med. :p

Now onto the latest posts: obviously you can't nuke the tanks and mech-inf without killing the hostages, so you will have to settle for nuking a nearby but still visible city in order to scare them off.

What poaw really needs right now are for some of those nukes to have been nuclear AAMs.

I wonder if poaw can make a scenario that just involves nuking everything or starting WW3 on purpose.

I'm not actually "bad" I just deliberately focus on the most entertaining elements of my playthroughs.

I'm actually doing "worse" this time, which I blame on a much more energetic resistance to my forces and the fact that, much like Hearts of Iron 3, playing as the US is basically cheating. There are other people much much worse at the game.

Anyway on that note, I managed to save my tankers and AWACs by sprinting down Mirages to engage the Algerians. The net result....

Note this is a picture of a Mirage 2000 underwater.

I lost 2 more Rafales, 8 Mirage 2000s, and 2 SEMs in the process of saving 3 tankers, an AEW plane, and 10 Rafales. I also had to pull my AEW, fighter, and tanker coverage off-station. Which resulted in this popping up...

14 SU-24s coming in like a Conga Line, I would not have even detected them in time except that at some point after my AEW aircraft was about 200nmi off station, and still fleeing, I realized I should periodically flick one of the Horizon's radars on periodically. Second time I did it I found them about 50nmi out and rolling in hard on my ships. Managed to shoot them all down before they dropped or launched anything, but still things got exciting for about 35 - 45 seconds.

Oh I finally found a Kilo and sank it.

Questions here:

- How many planes did you manage to take out in the end, during that huge battle over the Med?
- How was the Kilo found and sunk? A Rubis? A surface ship?

As for the Su-24, you were really lucky, because if they were carrying Kh-31p missiles, they were barely inside range of your CVBG, and a 56 missile salvo could have actually managed to get inside the PAAMS defensive grid. I suppose that all the planes were killed by Aster 30 missiles fired from the Forbin and Chevalier Paul, right?

Anyway, these eight pilots will receive a few posthumous decorations (unless you managed to get SAR assets to their position, which is more than unlikely), while you will be blamed for the near-fiasco.

43 including the Su-24s.
One of my ASW helos located, identified, and engaged it.

Yes they were, and just barely.

On an unrelated note:
Drop the nukes.

All of the nukes. You know you want to.

Actually, those are the most energetic thermonuclear devices in France. The TNO and the TN75, carried by the SLBM, are estimated at 150kT each. After all, it's more efficient to fire several small nukes at a city than a big one, and each of those is stealthed, particularly precise and reliable.

I have faith in poaw's ability to somehow end up being in control of those too.

On an unrelated note:

Mon Dieu. You won the presidential elections in France after causing World War III in Syria the year before, didn't you?

More seriously, that message just changed a daring military action that was shaping as a harsh lesson upon Algeria to... well, political shitstorm is kinda too tame for what's going to happen after that.
