We two thousand percent want storm magic, it will give us such a massive advantage at sea it's not even funny. The spirits aren't going anywhere and i'd rather not piss off the very powerful fire spirit of an active volcano that we live right next to, maybe if we had more spirit based magic but right now our spirit magic is pretty bare bones.

The main problem with taming the Volcano is not that it is likely hellishly difficult and likely to blow up in our faces; the main problem with taming the volcano is that even if she succeeds, it will only last a single life-time, about 3 turns, and then we're back to square one.

Learning Storm magic, or learning to empower herself with spirit, is probably something that our people will be using for a really long time. The reason I prefer the spirit option is because Runa is apparently very good at spirit stuff.

Totally agree, the reason I prefer the Storm Magic to the spirit magic is because we already have spirit magic we can expand upon and the fact that storm magic would make our naval power unstoppable and it would let us expand our knowledge base into another form of magic.

With storm magic it would allow our ships, or rather the people on them, to control the winds and thus allow them to travel much faster even in rough weather. It would also allow them to flee from or catch up to enemy boats very easily at which point they can use the lightning aspect of storm magic to destroy ships from range, something that won't be possible technologically for a very long time.

I agree with your logic and have changed my vote to both these options, so if either of them have a chance of beating out Volcano, they will. Can I interest you in doing the same?

[X] [Runa] Learn the storm magic of the Stormfolk.

I believe that we will learn storm magic with the aid of spirits, so I'm seeing this as more of branching out into other types of spirit magic than just fire. We don't know how the Stormfolk do it, so we are likely to try to learn it the way we learned our magic, which is via spirits.

I'm leaning towards learning storm magic as was noted earlier, weather manipulation can give us an edge in naval transit and combat, something in which we are specializing in. There is also some synergy with our previous knowledge of fire magic as heat and convection currents (both in the atmosphere and hydrosphere) are an important part of the formation of various weather conditions like, well, storms and thus studying this may reveal insights to how weather works.

And come on, who doesn't want to artificially induce a massive firestorm*?

*The only acceptable alternative is artificially inducing a massive volcanic eruption or fault line movement by convection currents underneath the crust, which I think is a possible route when voting for binding the great spirit.

What knowledge of fire magic, mate? But yeah, I'd love for us to discover a "Great Spirit of the Storm".

Rather than try to ascend to spirithood, with all the messiness that entails (likely some kind of ancestor worship?), I would prefer to establish a precedent for the binding of Fire Mountain. While not necessarily a replicable feat for anyone not heroic status, it shows that this can be done.

Would the common reaction be amusement if the storm magic of the storm folk has the highest DC to pass?

None of the options have any DCs apart from any Innovation Rolls that they might have.
What does this quote mean then if no option had a DC?
Since folks are voting for binding the great spirit, I will forewarn you that you are voting for what Runa attempts and whether or not she succeeds in whatever she attempts will be determined once the vote has ended.
Every action would succeed? Or is just a research bar to fill up in possibly one turn?

It means that rather than setting a DC for every action, I just roll one or more dice to see how well it goes and then determine the outcome from the dice roll combined with the outcomes of other things and other factors such as the Values of those involved or their technology.
