Catching Victory (A Pokemon Quest)

Wild Wurmple Caught
"Neptune, careful not to knock it out!" You call out as he launches another Bubble at the Wurmple. The Wurmple responds by launching multiple thin purple energy beams at Neptune.

Poison Sting You thing, already reaching for the antidote. Both sets of projectiles hit their targets. Neptune seems to be fine thankfully.

After trading attacks a few more times, the Wurmple is in much worse shape, with cuts and bruises adorning his body.

Smiling, you throw the pokeball. It hits the wounded Wurmple, engulfing him in a white light and drawing it into the small orb. After the pokeball falls to the ground, it shakes for a few seconds before beeping, confirming that it is caught.

Smiling, you pick up the pokeball containing the freshly caught Wurmple.

Do you nickname him?

[] No

After you decide, you consider whether or not to look for more pokemon. On one hand, you could stand to catch a few more. On the other, you'd rather not be caught outside of a city after it gets dark.

Why'd we buy a light if we weren't going to be out at night?

Also, are we planning to use this Wurmple for more than a couple of weeks? If it's going to be an actual member of our team, then we should nickname it, but if it's just a placeholder, I don't really see any reason for it.

Cave exploration, just in case you do get caught out at night, improvised weapon, things like that.

That depends on what the players choose. You can vote to release pokemon at any time.

Aww, I'm late to the party--we actually caught it? Meh, I'm usually not a fan of Dustox and Beautifly due to their weak stats being completely outclassed by level 30.

@MData Would it be possible to give typically "weak" Pokemon stats boosts in later levels, so they can continue to go toe-to-toe with the usual big hitters? Or is there a way to make base stats not matter much in this quest? I feel like our Pokemon team options would greatly expand if we could focus more on movesets and typing, without worrying about base stats. Otherwise, the munchkins among us--including me--will cringe everytime we catch a 'weak' Pokemon. But if there's no solution to this, we'll just get used to it.

If anyone else has suggestions for how to make typically weak Pokemon more usable, that would be great. Sorry for rambling about this--I'm just hoping to nip this issue in the bud, since it seems to be an underlying question in many Pokemon quests (and stories too). :(

Hard to name something that evolves into two different lines.

I'm pretty sure there's a name rater early on so it can be changes later.

Yes.

I'm not having hard stats on any of the pokemon so if any single pokemon is around the same level as another pokemon, then barring type advantages or disadvantages, they will have around the same chance of winning.

Barring legendary pokemon of course. They're going to have an advantage around the same level discounting type advantage.

Sweet! That generates a lot of team options that I usually wouldn't even consider in games.

1) We don't know its gender nor evolution yet. It would be nice if we didn't have to follow game mechanics on naming, and we could give it a name whenever we decide.
2) Some more practice for Neptune before we head back to Zarivar to heal both our 'mon?

Wild Starly
Your freshly caught Wurmple in hand, you continue to search Route 301. All in all, it's a pretty relaxing walk. Glancing at your pokegear, you see it's around 3:30.

You start to debate whether or not to head back when you see a shadow out of the corner of your eye. Looking up, you see a dark shape heading right for you! Diving to the ground, you barely avoid a wild bird pokemon. You see the Starly turn around, going in for another pass.

A Wild Starly wants to fight!

Level: 7

[X] Try to catch.

Would a strategy write-in for the battle make us more likely to catch it?

[x] Have Neptune start out with a smokescreen
-[x]Then have your Wurmple stringshot it from under cover and then attack with poison sting
--[X]Once it is about to go down, catch it.

Keep in mind, Starly at level 7, even though it can fly, doesn't have any flying type moves, or any distance moves. Even if it can fly around, it can't to any damage aside from with tackle and quick attack.

That said, this vote is good enough for me, even though I'd like to put in a contingency for what to do when the Starly comes in close with quick attack.

[X] Battle plan A
-[x] Neptune starts out with a smokescreen then uses Bubble.
-[x] Wurmple stringshots it from under cover and then attacks with poison sting.

I could go either way on the catching Starly part, but I'm leaning towards no for now.

Wild Starly Caught
"Neptune! Smokescreen!" You yell as you toss the pokeball containing Wurmple. Neptune complies, covering the area with smoke.

Wurmple appears from the pokeball in a bright light. Still bruised but he was still able to fight.

"Wurmple, use String shot!"

The Starly shoots out of the smoke to tackle Neptune only to get covered in the the worm pokemon's string. The Starly falls for a second, the strong getting caught in their wings before flapping harder to try to compensate.

The Wurmple follows up with launching Poison Sting while Neptune fires a Bubble. The goo in the Starly's wings slows them down, making dodging difficult, but they still manage to avoid the worst of the onslaught, though not without taking a few hits.

The Starly dashes towards Neptune, a white outline appearing behind them. Neptune tries to get out of the way but the Starly slams into Neptune. Either in a panic, or he's still mad at Neptune for the earlier beating, Wurmple launches a Poison Sting at Starly while Neptune was being tackled.

The poison needles hit both of the unlucky pokemon, though the Starly clearly was hit with most of them.
Neptune gets back up, still worse off from the attack though neither he nor the Starly were poisoned.

"Hor! Horsea!" He yells at the Wurmple. You don't know what Neptune is saying but you'd guess that it's not exactly flattering.

"Wurmple Wurmp!" The Wurmple yells back, trying to defend himself. You look over to the Starly. She's hurt but she is getting up. You fish out a pokeball from your belt and get ready to toss it. Before the Starly can prepare another attack, you let the pokeball loose, hitting her and engulfing it in a red light before drawing them inside.

The pokeball shakes once, twice, three times before the beep informs you that it's caught.

Picking up the pokeball, you smile in satisfaction at your third pokemon.

You've caught a Starly!

[] Don't give a nickname for now.

Looking back at your two other pokemon, you see them still arguing. Maybe teaching your pokemon how to work together would help them not get in each others way.

Undecided about the rest, but Elvis is a fantastic name for a Starly.

Definitely this. We, and our Pokemon, are probably pretty tired by now, and we should probably train them to work together before trying any more battles.
