Catching Victory (A Pokemon Quest)

If we want to catch it, we should probably try to weaken it first. We don't exactly have the Pokeballs to spare.

It wouldn't make sense for the GM to ask us whether we wanted to throw a Pokeball when Onix is still at full health. I think the GM is simply asking for our intentions, whether itss to fight & catch or only to fight. :)

Catching Onix
"Neptune, Joan" You call out. Immediately, Neptune shoots out a smokescreen while Joan charges the Onix, club held up high. The smoke engulfs all three fighters. It is almost thick enough to cut through a knife, making your flashlight useless.

After a few seconds of fighting, all obscured by the smoke, Neptune sails out of the smoke, slamming into the back of a rock. Still on the ground, he shoots a stream of bubbles into the smoke. The bubbles sail right past Joan, almost hitting her but still connecting with the Onix. The Onix lets out a mighty roar as she recoils in pain. It looks like she's about to charge at Neptune before Joan calls out.

"Cu! Cubone!"

The Onix pauses, and turns towards Joan.

"Cubone! Cubone!" Joan yells out, pointing at the Onix with her club. You don't know what what Joan is saying but the Onix's face contorts in pure rage. Joan leaps up and strikes the Onix with her Bone Club before the Onix swipes at Joan with her tail. The blow sends her flying, slamming into the ground.

By now, all three combatants look like they're wounded. Neptune is starting to get up and Joan is unsteady on her feet. The Onix seems to be on her last metaphorical legs, though considering that she was fighting two pokemon with type advantages, that is to be expected.

You don't know what what Joan
repeated "what"

[X] Fire one more weak Bubble, then throw a Pokeball.

This can be counted with notmi's vote. I just wanted to show our intention to not immediately KO Onix. Bubble is effectively a 120 power attack versus Onix, though MData could probably somewhat nerf super-effectiveness to keep the quest less focused on game mechanics. :)

What happens if you knock a Pokemon unconscious? Why can't we still catch it? I know that this takes elements from the games, but whether the Pokemon is conscious or not when we catch it shouldn't matter, except to make it even easier.

...yeah, I was thinking that too. If this were a fanfic, I could probably come up with some hand-wavy reason, like "the pokeball bonding process requires a conscious Pokemon". But it does seem like a game mechanic, since IIRC, the anime completely ignores the issue.

Eh, a Pokeball is used to return knocked out Pokemon all the time in the anime, so we know that they can safely go into a ball. Unless there is some explicit mind control stuff going on, there shouldn't really be a "bonding process" that requires consciousness. Minus mind control, the only bonding process that would go on would be purely biological.

Obviously, it's so that the Pokemon can't be caught by any other Pokeball once the bonding has occurred! :V

Yeah, I could probably come up with other hand-wavey reasons too, but these are all ex post facto explanations.

I've been thinking about that too. I couldn't think of a good reason why a character couldn't catch an unconscious pokemon so I thought of a couple of ways around this.

1. I was going to have it be seen as in bad taste in-universe to try to catch a pokemon that's completely knocked out. As long as it's conscious, it has a fighting chance to resist. Catching a pokemon that is unconscious, already wounded from something other that your attempt to catch it, and the like is seen as just wrong so most people don't do it. A Pragmatic character wouldn't care, and as such would have had the option of catching them anyway.

2. Instead of being knocked out, the pokemon, fueled by adrenaline, would turn tail and run after seeing that things weren't going their way.

3. That pokemon is dead.

Exiting the Cave
You throw the pokeball at the wounded Onix. Just like before, it shakes a few times before clicking closed. Satasfied, you pick it up.

You've gotten a full team of six pokemon in the first day of being a trainer. Most people need at least a week, though most people don't catch every pokemon in sight.

You see the ladder leading to the enterence to the cave past where the Onix was so you don't bother taking out your potions. You could just head to a Pokemon Center after you reach the surface. You start heading out of the cave.

You've caught an Onix!
