So I don't normally write things, but I had an idea that wouldn't leave me alone. So let's give this a try.
UNHINGED
His sister was talking to herself again.
Kart quickly lowered the volume on his game so he could listen in. He didn't want to, but felt like he needed to. He needed to know what she was up to next.
"Why the hell would I call her? She's obviously written us off. We've got the money, who cares why she isn't here?" A brief pause, as though she was waiting for a response. "Because it's a friggin' waste of time? Have you forgotten we have more important things to do?" Another pause. "Like what? What do you mean, like what? How about showing people the goddamn alien body in the basement so we can finally get the ball rolling!?"
Oh God, she was going to show that thing to people? That would be a disaster! But what could he do about it?
Everything had started slipping out of control a few months ago. It had started with a bunch of weird noises coming from Cass' room. He and Floppy had come to check on her, and she had brushed them off without opening the door, making a joke about having a mental breakdown. Flop had accepted that immediately and gone back to bed, but Kart had stayed a moment more. He had been wondering if maybe he shouldn't open the door and check on her anyway, when suddenly she started talking. Something about a...Guy-gas? It had sounded like she was having a conversation with someone, but he couldn't hear anyone else, and a quick peek through the keyhole had revealed no one.
Since that day, Cass had begun talking to herself a lot. She probably didn't realize he could hear through the bedroom wall they shared, but she had a loud voice, so it wasn't hard. She had apparently become very concerned about aliens, and psychic powers, and that the government and police were being secretly taken over. She had decided to take it upon herself to do something about it, just her and her new imaginary friend "Buzz Buzz". It was all ridiculous of course, aliens weren't real, that was just something the adults used to scare them into behaving. If there were actually aliens, wouldn't they see spaceships and stuff flying around?
But Cass believed it, and had started getting up to a lot of strange things. Out of concern, Kart had started following her whenever he could, and had been witness to a lot of strange behavior as a result. The least strange thing had been when she had started digging through all the trash cans in town, looking for food. Not eating any of it, just... stockpiling it, in the shed behind the house. He didn't know what she ended up doing with it all, as it had disappeared while he had been at school one day.
He had seen her heading up the hill behind their house, bat in hand, grim faced like she was marching to war. He hadn't followed her up, out of concern for reports of aggressive animals up there, but he had waited where he could see her come back down. When she did, an hour and a half later, she was chuckling to herself about "fucking birds got what they deserved" and carrying what looked like rocks. Kart, now more curious than cautious, had gone up to look and found pile after pile of dead birds, all looking like they had been bludgeoned to death with a bat.
Then had come the week where she had sat in a dingy alleyway near the hospital, dressed in a creepy looking outfit clearly meant to hide her face, and spent day after day talking to random strangers and taking money from them. Was she a drug dealer? He hadn't seen her give them anything, but they did seem happier after they left, and that one guy had been babbling weird things about Greek gods or something.
He had thought it couldn't get any worse, and then she broke into the mayor's house. Just walked in the back door like she owned the place. He had heard a bunch of crashing noises, then she came out stuffing money and paperwork in her bag, cackling like a maniac. He heard the next day the whole place had been trashed, and the police were looking for the perpetrator.
And then came the events of two days ago. He had stayed up late and hidden in the living room behind a chair to see if he could spot her doing anything unusual. He had done this a few times before with no result other than watching her make some kind of posters or read books about starting a business, but that night he hit the awful jackpot. He had watched, horrified, while Cass came the back door of the kitchen, looking like she had been hit by a truck, dragging some sort of giant metal thing behind her. She dragged it down to the basement, with a lot of banging and swearing, came back up, guzzled down an entire twenty four pack of WilyCola (which had been meant for all of them to share) and then, seemingly ignoring her injuries, went straight up to bed. He heard her snoring within thirty seconds.
He had gone down to look at it after. It turned out to be some sort of ruined robot, except it had organs in it, like the frog he'd dissected at school. He'd heard of stuff like that, but never seen one before. Didn't one of the Big Three supposedly do something like that? And then of course the next day he heard the story of the fire, not too far from their house, and saw a story on the news about a missing robot master, and it was obvious what happened. Kart spent the next day looking over his shoulder for robot hit squads. He may be young, but even he knew what happened when you robbed Doctor Wily.
"OK fine, I'll call her, alright? But only to get you to shut up about it, I'm sure she's fine. Now can we talk about the ants and slugs? There are way too many in that cave, they're gonna end up taking over. We need to stop them." What in the world did that mean? Now bugs are threatening town? It was past time Kart did something about this. Problem was, he didn't know what. Everything he could think of had more downsides than upsides.
Did he confront her? Lay out everything he knew and ask her to stop before something happened? Problem was, if she really was going-
Kart tripped over that thought, the same as he had every day the last month. He couldn't bring himself to think it. But...no. It was time to admit it. His sister was going insane. There, he said it. She was going insane, and was a danger to herself and others. Which was why confronting her was a bad plan. What if she attacked him or something? Cass was the only thing standing between him and Flop and homelessness and starvation, the last thing he needed was for her to decide he was in league with the space invaders or whatever.
He could tell an adult and get help. Someone at school maybe, or a doctor, or one of the nicer police officers. Except he didn't know how they would react. Cass had done a lot of illegal things already. What if they threw her in jail, or one of those, what do you call them, asylum? Plus that would just make it easier for the Big Three to find out who had destroyed their robot. He wanted her to get better, not die or be imprisoned!
He could just...ignore it? Try his best to keep himself and Flop out of the way, and hope nothing too terrible happened? That would be the easiest probably, but also the least likely to work. If no one stopped her, Cass would likely just keep getting more erratic, and eventually someone would get hurt.
Kart put his game controller down. He didn't feel much like playing anymore. He was just a kid. He didn't know how to handle adult problems like this. Slowly he curled up in his bed, and began to sob quietly, while his sister continued to rant to herself about aliens, and cave bugs, and the merits of starting her own cult instead of a gang.
