Astartes - Web Animation

Too bad GW decided to pull the original videos down from YouTube. Their version also has a bunch of ill fitting music slapped in completely ruining the tense atmosphere of the original. If they had to change the music cause of copyright they could have at least done a half decent job of it instead of the garbage job they did. They even mirrored a scene for who knows what reason.

The Helsreach film was still there recently.

Honestly find this news not a good sign, the creator will be considerably restricted in what he is allowed to do in stories. Like he will likely only be allowed to depict Primaris Marines fighting standard enemies that have models.

Also, like if they make the guy start using specific models with lots of Imperium-y bells and whistles and human faces the costs and time for product could very well fucking skyrocket. The original stuff had the advantage of being a more pared down, less over the top depiction of space marines that's more doable for a 3D graphic artist.

Yeah, I'm kinda skeptical that they're going to pare down what made this an actually unique take on 40k.

Come on guys lets be reasonable here. Yes him being hired will add a level of creative oversight, It will also mean the creator has a reliable way to be paid for his work as well as a corporate legal team behind him to protect against similar events that had previously nuked his channel.

It feels really shitty to me to complain that a creator is going to be paid for their work, like we are all entitled to the product of dozens if not hundreds of hours of their labor just because its a passion project.

Chances are the bit getting mirrored are due to Syama Pedersen's own direction, and maybe he just wanted to fix his own mistakes. Shame about the music, even if it's copyrighted.

Having conveniently watched the previous version a few days ago, aside from a couple mirrored shots, the music's been changed around a little bit. Some beats and notes that I don't hear anymore in some memorable scenes, but I think the biggest change here is that there's just a fair bit more general ambience and background music to the entire 'series,' but that's all kept fairly quiet or in the back of the audio, and doesn't crowd out anything important from what I can hear. Probably the most notable moment would be the boarding craft approach, but the scene was pretty quiet and muffled in the original, and I don't have very much issue with that change.

What changes have been made are so minimal or hard to discern, I don't honestly think it's anywhere as big of a deal as stuff like YT comments and some threads about this have been pushing.

Saved a copy while the other compilations are still up, but this is bad news in the end imo.

My first thought when watching these videos was wondering when the hammer from GW would drop; historically they have been quite litigious and protective of their IP. (Whilst also often not understanding its real strengths and under-utilising it, often giving away quite valuable deals for pennies.) In recent years they seem to have started to understand the internet and their own fanbase a little better, but old habits die hard.

This is a much happier ending than what I had worried might happen, which is that Mr Pederson might be forced to stop making the art he and his fans love altogether. Indeed, I don't think that GW is acting with bad intent here. If they were not committed to a working relationship which would be beneficial to them, then I don't think they would have gone to all this effort.

I'm willing to wait and see what comes of this partnership before crying foul. Especially if it lets him actually turn this into a full-time job (and IIRC, the AstartesnPatreon was not financially at that level), this could actually be a really positive thing.

Oh!

When I'd last checked, I think at some point after either Ep. 4 or Ep. 5 came out, it was several hundred, clearly he got quite a lot of growth since then.

I think the channel hack brought a lot of attention to the guy. I hope it turns into a fruitful collaboration, becasue GW seem to be trying to expand, but I'm not willing to money on it.

I mean I recall him saying at one point that he wanted this to be a fan project instead of a job. There is a difference between something you do for money and something you do simply for the love of it.

How so? I always hear this, but I don't actually get examples.
It depends where on the spectrum/timeline of purism you fall. The franchise gets continuously updated in waves to attract new customers and market itself in often self destructive ways.

- most recent -
Primaris and the return of Guilliman
Matt Ward
The existence of the HH novel series
The Tau
The Imperium getting narratively reframed as good guys because they're humies
The franchise ditching its critique of Thatcherite Britain and fascism
- least recent -

Okay fair enough, though personally I don't think any of those are complete negatives and all have given us good lore and stories along with the bad, but do people not realize Matt Ward hasn't worked directly for GW since like 2014? And one of the most beloved Warhammer games, Vermintide 2 was written by him? That more than anything else, I just wish people would let go. All of the negative changes he made to the fluff have long since been retconned or ignored, and Newcrons were a positive addition to the setting fite me.

The stars will grow cold before the gods forgive Matt Ward.

Yeah he made the critical error of pissing off Space marines fans with the Spiritual Liege nonsense and grey knight nonsense, but if you're actually invested in other parts of the setting he's not really that bad.

That's probably my most controversial 40k take right there.

Matt Ward was extremely bad more so because he was just a high profile symptom/at the forefront of what was going on elsewhere at the time which was simplification. Matt Ward's Grey Knights stuff isn't bad because Grey Knights are bad, or Overpowered, or whatever. It's bad because it's a surface level reading of the setting. It just seems like it's written by someone looking at a Lexicanum page and taking the most obvious stuff to magnify it while eliminating any hint of nuance. The infamous bit where the Grey Knights bathe in Sister of Battle blood gets memed on for being Khornate but the actual issue with it is more so that it sounds like something that someone who has never read anything from 40k before would write. Like if you go into one of the many threads on this forum full of people that don't like 40k, or at least don't engage with it as a product and only interact with fans, one of them could probably have come up with that scene and been like 'idk i assume something like this fits in, it's edgy and stuff.'

That's how Matt Ward came across and why he was so widely hated, in my opinion.
