Astartes - Web Animation

So Corridor Digital did a brief rundown on the new Astartes Part 5. Good stuff. Starts around 2:40.

Watching part 4 again it seems like bolters have a fire rate of about 1800 RPM. A marine burns through his magazine in about a second. That's quite frankly fucking insane and when put into perspective really helps one to understand where Storm Bolters get their names from.

It really helps to show how even an astartes in power armor may have trouble controlling the recoil on full auto. It also helps to illustrate why humans usually have to make due with smaller caliber bolt guns.

it's literally two seconds but i am already loving this depiction of the orks.

like with everything astartes-guy has done, he's doing an amazing job getting that sense of transhuman dread across. orks aren't just nutso football hooligans, they're seven foot tall bags of muscle that club space marines to death through their armor with sheer hammering force. and the speed, the sheer violence of action, man. we get ten or so frames of the ork scene before the first ork gets squished, no time at all, and the head squish is only four frames. first frame: fist comes into view, 2nd: fist is already in the guy's face, by the 3rd the head is gone entirely.

as soon as the head is gone we can see the second ork coming into view where it just was, relatively long sequence here (about ten-ish?) with most of the motion in the head as the marine turns to look and the ork crosses the screen. the right arm starts moving at the same time the choppa comes on screen, and impact is about five frames in. then we hold the impact for about three frames while sparks fly, marine pushes the axe away with his right hand in a couple of frames.

then, even if it doesn't feel like it, the second punch takes a long time (for astartes at least). the left hand is already on screen as the axe is being pushed away, and the motion (from fingers forming the fist to impact) is a whole 12 frames. it's barely a half second of anticipation, blink and you'll miss it, but you can see the punch being telegraphed and the ork's face getting pulled closer and damn it, somehow it works. we hold the aftermath of the punch for about 6 frames as the ork falls off screen, then the marine gets about six more frames on his own before being dogpiled.

the whole thing is, what, three seconds? god damn.

edit: like, there's this little hold here before the second punch when the arm is sort of sitting still, bottom-center across the screen and the fist is being formed, maybe an eighth of a second, that you should not be able to notice. it's so fast. but somehow you catch it while seeing the ork come closer and it perfectly primes you for that pivot punch. the way that second punch is shot feels amazing too, like you're following the fist in.

this is overly long and gushy for zero actual insight but god, the animation in the originals was good and this is impressive even on top of that.

Are we even sure that Lamenter is even dead? Orks vary in power depending on the might and progression of the horde and choppas wielded by basic ork boys shouldn't be able to get through Astartes power armor that quickly. I think there's a good chance that Lamenter is moments away from flinging the entire lot of 'em off unless the orks bring in something nastier to finish the job.

Lamenters: *exists*

Lamenters: Why are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel my leg… and my arm… even my fingers. The body I've lost… the comrades I've lost… won't stop hurting… It's like they're all still there. You feel it, too, don't you?

Honestly I'm just excited to see Marines this well animated against something that's treated as a credible threat, as opposed to the rotflstomp the original short was.

Orks are bionengineered weapons designed to be lethal even if you reduce their logistics down to the stone age. They've got the muscle to smash ceramite.

Well you can see the sparks flying from the hits, so the first few swings from the orks didn't get through it. Given the sheer mass Astartes power armour has and their natural resilience he's probably not too rattled either, although I wouldn't be surprised if those swings gouged into it a bit.

It does depend on the Orks, though, and these look like regular Boyz. If the Lamenter is rescued in time or is able to recover, he'll probably survive, though he'll be rather rattled.

If it were Nobz, though, yeah he'd screwed.

He'll be recovered, but the Thunderhawk will be shot down and fall into the maw of a giant sandworm that will then be caught and eaten by an even more colossal space dragon that will then cause said dragon to get intoxicated and fall into a black hole.

The absolute legend.

From the community post:

And that's not all. It turns out Syama isn't the only passionate Warhammer fan making incredible animations. We're thrilled to announce the Warhammer Animation Team are working with Lost Legion Studios on The Exodite, with PaxelArt on Primaris: The Last Templar, and with Codex Film on Iron Within.

It seems that GW couldn't resist screwing up SOME aspects of hiring them, though; the GW version maxes at 720p, and apparently has some significant volume/music changes that mess with the atmosphere for the worse. Some of the changes were necessary, since some of the original's music was from the old 2012 Dredd movie and, y'know, copyright concerns and all, but from the comments it goes beyond that. I'm couching all this in 'apparently' and 'from the comments' because I can't get any audio from the GW hosted version at all, on firefox it won't play and on chrome it's totally silent.

Too bad GW decided to pull the original videos down from YouTube. Their version also has a bunch of ill fitting music slapped in completely ruining the tense atmosphere of the original. If they had to change the music cause of copyright they could have at least done a half decent job of it instead of the garbage job they did. They even mirrored a scene for who knows what reason.
