Ascensions and Transgressions: the Tales of Keris Dulmeadokht (Exalted game)

You know, reading some of the more recent Kerisgame stuff (and everything with Echo) is inspiring me to come up with a concept for a character who's mute. And still manages to be an absolute deadpan snarker.

Well, Keris' problem is that Echo is smarter than her. And also highly irreverent and legitimately has a Principle towards making fun of people.

(She is the cause of quite a few tantrums from her younger siblings, and is the reason some of Rathan's first words were "Eko, no!")

The Althing Infernal - Chapter 5
Heh. This week's Kerisgame is actually topical here. Keris undoubtedly had intent to deceive when she - successfully - avoided letting Sasi know the full contents of her talk with Salina, and then later kept the existence of her inner world from Ligier. She did not, at any point, tell any outright falsehoods - indeed, she was honest and upfront about other things, which is how Keris tends to lie in general; volunteering sacrificial information around the thing she's concealing and lying her ass off by omission. Part of that is personality, and part of it is that she is usually around Sasi, who has the SWLIHN lie detector.

So, should Keris be unable to lie to a Solar like this? What's the difference between a falsehood, a half-truth and a lie of omission? Which should JET be able to pick up on? Certainly, Keris's way of hiding things is very hard to pick up on, and frankly it would essentially make it 100% impossible to betray a Solar who had JET if it let you pick up on lies of omission like that unless you just never spoke to them, in which case it's not really a betrayal because you're a complete stranger.

... and on another note, we've taken much amusement in Keris's apparent Dynast fetish, and Haneyl's little imperialistic princess traits and a few other quirks of Keris's personality that have never really been explained in where the hell they came from. Perhaps, then, this mini-biography might shed a little light on the matter.

Nellens Murenu was born in RY702; the third son of a minor family in one of the Great Houses on the Blessed Isles. He had two older brothers, one elder sister and one younger sister, and his family was prosperous; if sadly unblessed by the Dragons. His closest Dragonblooded relative was a Water Aspect; his maternal grandfather's brother. Inspired by the man, he joined the military after finishing his education - his eldest brother followed in his father's footsteps in the running of the family, while the second-eldest became an Immaculate monk; now retired and living in the Lap.

Murenu was not an outstanding hero or exceptional genius, but he was solid, efficient and reliable. He rose quickly to an officer rank, and was given command of a talon in the legions. Those who didn't know him well might have been surprised at his dabbling in poetry - he had an eloquent and passionate depth of feeling beneath his outward straightforward demeanour, and while he wasn't widely published, his work survives in a few local anthologies from his home precinct.

In the late 730s, Murenu's talon - with him still leading it - was assigned to the retinue of the Dowager Emperor as he continued to campaign in the Threshold after handing over the Scarlet Throne to his successor. While this brought moderate wealth and success to his family and had him considered for a promotion to winglord, it was ultimately not to be. During a campaign in the northern Scavenger Lands in RY746, Nellens Murenu's position was fired on by an enemy siege engine, and he was killed. He was survived by a wife and three children.

His story doesn't quite end there, though. Never one to dawdle, the hun soul of the man once born to House Nellens travelled rapidly through Lethe; drifting on the currents of reincarnation for a little under two years as its memories and experiences were washed clean. Almost nothing remained of who he once was by the time it was reborn, amidst the low buildings of a little river village a thousand miles south of where it had been freed from the mortal coil. Reborn in the body of a baby girl.

Of course, there is a difference between "nothing" and "almost nothing". And traces of a life once lived will leave their mark...

Hunting in the North - Chapter 1
Awright! On the subject of games, Kerisgame has a long-awaited new arc starting up in the first chapter of Hunting in the North. Yup, Keris is now a landowner. She has holdings. She has - if she can convince Paricehet to serve her and make beautiful things to sell in the City's markets while she's away - an income stream. She's going to have a High First Age flagship with which she can basically seize control over the Southwestern seas. Yup, little Keris is growing up and graduating from local-scale murderhobo adventures to the thrilling game of territory control and empire building.

But first, of course, she has to spend a short filler arc gaining xp by hunting raksha out on the edge of Creation, getting to know Sasi's baby-daddy and being an Exalt in that wonderful position of not having to give a shit about the Wyld Hunt. Well, she does have to give a shit about it. But the Wyld Hunt in question is, you know, her hunting things in the Wyld, which is much more fun than the other kind. Out here, she can flare to her heart's content. :D

And also, ze manse! Eeee! Loving the akuma Guardian, mwaa haa, and the way it functions as an omni-Crafting manse is awesome. I'll write up the Nest of Paricehet and add it to Keris's character sheet when I have the time. Wheee! ^_^

Most people can hold, like, two weapons. Keris can hold both blades of Ascending Air in her hands, her spear in two hair tendrils, her new madness-inducing-AoE-lightning sword in a third and three throwing knives in various other coils ready to flick into someone's throat. It's a pretty impressive display even without the caste mark flaring. Anima light only compounds it. :p

Hunting in the North - Chapter 2
Although I totally am putting the Trader-Guilders somewhere in the game, though. Hmm. Maybe in the West. Maybe in the South East. Hmm.
If this means Keris gets to be the one who rescues Daja from the shipwreck (in her bitching First Age flagship), I will love you forever.

And on that note, Chapter 2 of Hunting in the North! In which, in her ninety fourth session of gameplay, Keris finally summons her first demon. Which is a deva. That Echo made. She also pisses off Testolagh by not being able to keep herself from making little jealous territorial remarks about how she's Sasi's mistress and is there for her when he isn't, and sets off to FIGHT ZE RAKSHA CANNIBALS!

The West can always use more features.

Personally I'd have a few different branches of them, considering we know there are the sea traders and the land traders and etc. Perhaps they are splinters of a formerly united whole or whatever. So there are the Blue Traders, because the west needs to be interesting, and then there are the Dreaming Sea Traders (whose believed to be incredibly odd by the rest of the groups). The White Traders cover much of the east, but its the Red Traders of the South that most will come into contact with.

Their 'name' of course is just what the Kaq's call them. They don't speak their own tongue near outsiders (and of course each thinks they speak the pure version, even though there are five different derivatives. Not sure if there would still be the council of Traders though.

If this means Keris gets to be the one who rescues Daja from the shipwreck (in her bitching First Age flagship), I will love you forever.
Natural Sorcerors! RUN AWAY!

(would it be more elemental blooded or Thaumaturgy that doesn't suck)

Kerisgame said:
Admittedly, he gets a little less friendly when he sees Keris, but he still smiles at her. "Keris Dulmeadohkt," he says, inclining his head slightly, stepping in out of the snow. The snow on him melts instantly as the crowned sun symbol on his forehead lights up in green, while a demon brings him food. "And what brings you here?"
I take it you're using a different caste-mark for the Slayer?

Seeing another Infernal at work was pretty neat. Organizing a nation way out in the sticks (as far as the Realm is concerned) is a worthwhile project, though I wonder how he's branding everyone if that's Magnanimous Warning Glyph. Or did he only tag that one girl?

And he definitely seemed confused at Keris, even by her own judgement. There's the whole "sleeping with your ex" thing, plus her general air-headedness making her difficult to understand.

Well, I also went "You know what, there should probably be more Earth close to the pole of Earth" and stuck a continent roughly shaped like the Americas into the empty space.

(The Realm has a massive fortified area around the totally-not-Panama-Canal because if a hostile controlled it, they could both shut off access to the Far West and also access the metropolitan Realm)

Kerisgame caste marks are nearly the Solar ones in green. Nearly, but not quite. They slightly warp based on the Infernal's Yozis. A Fiend who favours TED, for example, might have the outer rim of their Eclipse symbol shaped like an ouroboros rather than a neat circle.

But that's basically just cosmetic and a legacy of how castes really, really don't matter much for Kerisgame. Remember, Infernals get two Favoured Yozis and no Caste Yozis - Keris favours Adorjan and Kimbery because of who she is, not because of the fact she has a corrupted Night Exaltation. Now, yes, a lot of Defilers, for example, will favour SWLIHN - but that's because of the kind of person who becomes a Twilight, not a direct link.

Fealty Acknowledging Audience

Ah, I should probably point out here. Sasi isn't his ex. She's his current. They're together, just separated by work. Keris is her mistress. Hence the awkwardness.

Let's put it this way.

If MalFeasBook was a thing, their relationship status would be "It's Complicated". And was like that even before Keris showed up, because Sasi also still loves her husband despite the fact that he's a Dragonblood who would try to kill her on sight and Testolagh has his own baggage related to his tragic Doomed Home Village and aye aye aye, Infernals why you so telenovella.

Ars Kerisa
Ars Kerisa

Being a totally accurate, comprehensive, and veracious description of the demon princes and the demon lords of Kerisa.

Queen Dulmea

According to the Zanarara Texts, Dulmea is the queen of the hellish realm of Kerisa. She is the first demon listed in the Texts, and is depicted as an empress with a crown made of teeth whose hair is every colour of the rainbow. Cadaka Calisa claims that she constantly plays music, and anyone who joins in that music - even to tap their fingers along - is possessed by Dulmea. She commands twelve legions of demons, but hides them as assassins and beasts. She teaches men the secrets of poisons, hidden ways and subtlety, and her kiss bestows calmness and temperance.

Serpent-King Pekhijira

Pekhijira (also Pekijira, Pecijilo) is said to rule the border of Kerisa. He takes the form of a great serpent with feathers and teeth made of silver, or a woman with long red hair who dresses all in red and gold. He leads no demon legions, for his might is such that he needs no servants. If offered fine wine and food, he will speak in a gravelly voice and teach the questioner the ways that one might make a man or a woman love them. If offered gold, however, he will fall into a rage and therefore may be bound with a collar of rowan wood.

Prince Rathan

Rathan (also Raffan, Rat King, Brattan) is the fairest and most innocent of the demons of Kerisa. The Zanarara Texts state that long ago his wicked sisters bound him within the moon, and mock and torment him endlessly, dripping acid into his eyes. He is fair-humoured and well-spoken, with a melodious voice. He takes the form of a handsome man with long red wavy red hair and pearls for teeth. He rides a horse with foam for a mane, or a river dragon made from ice. He thanks any summoner who frees him from his endless jail, and will perform a task for them, but the summoner must beware the attempts of his sisters to recapture and enslave him.

Princess Eko

Eko rules a great wasteland within Kerisa, where all is hot and dry and barren. She commands twenty legions of demons, who ride steeds as fast as the North wind. Narama Janapi writes that she wears the form of a smiling woman with black hair and long limbs who is quick with her jests and jibes, but Cadaka Calisa claims that she takes the form of a black scorpion sitting on the head of a fox or a red wind which comes surrounded by rains of blood or toads. Eko ruins cities, causes land to become desert and steals lifestock, and so is summoned to blight a foe.

Princess Haneyl

Haneyl (also Anneh, Hanni, Haargh) dwells within a great forest, and commands fifty legions of demons. She is the greatest general in Kerisa and seeks to enslave Pekhijira for some past insult. She wears the form of a beautiful woman with pale skin and bright green eyes, or a dragon whose scales are orchid petals. The number seven is sacred to her, and she may be bound within a seven-sided summoning circle. If one gives her seven gifts or tells her seven secrets she has never known before, she will carry out any task for her summoner. She is weak against the touch of a beautiful virgin, and cannot move if one lays hands on her or falls into a deep sleep if she is kissed by one. She teaches secrets of herbs, how to scry with fire, or the arts of war.

Duchess Calesco

Calesco (also Kaleseko) hides within the dark places of Kerisa, and beneath the clouds of a great swamp. She is described as a poisoner of wells and a drowner of infants, and commands ten demonic legions. Animals that feed off flesh swarm to her, and thus she is surrounded by wolves, hawks and snakes. She rides a tyrant lizard whose scales are as black as tar. She appears as a dark skinned woman who covers herself in veils to hide her ugliness, although Cadaka Calisa says that she has no real shape and must steal the forms from others. She will teach a summoner the arts of pleasure, of lies or the ways to handle hounds.

Duke Vali

Vali rules a cruel and bitter coastline and commands a great fleet upon which eight legions of demons are borne. Cadaka Calisa states that he rides a whale, and that his hair is lightning and his voice is the boom of thunder. He has the bearing of a man with weathered skin and many scars, and has chains upon his wrists and legs for he too was enslaved by his sisters. A conjurer must pretend that they are not trying to bind him and if they keep up the pretence he will willingly go into slavery, but if he catches their deceit he will slay them. He will take a man's weaknesses away and leave them only strength.

Count and Countess Zanra

Count and Countess Zanra rule the lands of Zanra, which islands within a tropical sea within Kerisa. Each of them commands five legions of demons. Their true names are not recorded within any book, but due to ancient pacts they may be bound with just their title. They are married, but refuse to spend any time near to each other. Count Zanra takes the form of a bald man with pale skin, or a dark skinned man with long green hair. Countess Zanra appears as a woman whose ink-blue skin is covered in tattoos. They each ride a great scarab beetle through the sky every day and night, taking turns. They will teach a summoner the liberal arts and the humanities, or paint a picture of the summoner which grants long life.

So are these the next couple of souls Keris is planned to get or are they something else that I missed?
They are planned future souls, yes. I actually have full write-ups of them, and ES and I have fairly developed ideas with regards to their character arcs, the Principles they're based on and who their "parents" are - in the same way that Haneyl is Sasi's "child" and Rathan is Rat's. However, unlike Echo, Rathan and Haneyl, they're not linked to Pantheon-keyworded Charms, and thus instead of showing up in infanthood or toddlerdom, they'll spring half-formed as adolescents from her brow when she gets Titanic Heart Overweening at Enlightenment 9.

Echo gestures wildly, bouncing up and down in her enthusiasm to point out that she's Adorjan's and that makes her better because while the other parent of the other two are only Exalts, she's the child of a Primordial.

(Echo then goes and runs off and pretends to be a bird, then invents a new kind of silk ribbon that spins silkworms and scatters them all over Haneyl's forest, then forgets about them)

Hunting in the North - Chapter 3
"I dash forward silently and cut them all down in a whirlwind of metal."
And speaking of Keris, new chapter! :p In which Keris ignores some Wyld mutants because they make her uncomfortable, learns to disguise her Essence, loses a "come fight me, biyatch" argument with the landscape, responds by setting quite a lot of it on fire and murdering a perfectly innocent two-bodied Wyld giant cyclops, may have been a Dragon King otherkin in her Past Life from how much her aesthetics seem to skew towards "sunlight" and "blood" when she's not concentrating, and makes the second Big Step towards Pirate Queen Keris; one that @EarthScorpion and I have been leading her towards for ages. Yes, that's right - Keris has finally worked out that she needs to grow beyond the murderhobo.
