@DragonParadox, here's the updated character sheets for our Warriors.

Once I started updating their skills, I noticed things were a little wonky. From the link to their Warrior class, I'm guessing you built them using 3.5 rules instead of PF. I fixed their point allotment, but it ended up lowering their Perception a bit due to the limitation on skill ranks per level, unless you are letting them have Perception as a class skill?

  • Net: +3 (BaB) [Special]

So we are talking about a +6 to disarm if we go with the cooperative maneuvers approach from Tom.

Yeah, I'm really digging the usefulness of our men against other humans. If they disarm and someone kicks away the weapon, or retrieves it. Speaking about it, I found this feat for Tom with Tactics:

Darting Retrieval (Combat, Teamwork) – d20PFSRD

"When an ally who also has this feat disarms an opponent and the disarmed item lands within your melee reach, as an immediate action you can move the disarmed item to another square within your melee reach. If you have at least one hand free and could carry the disarmed item, you can instead pick it up. Using this feat does not provoke an attack of opportunity."

Way to quickly get rid of melee fighters. It would have synergy with our men picking bills with their disarming potential too. Although it is too specialized.

Yep, right now one of the net dudes could make a Disarm attempt with a total bonus of +8, while simply attacking with their nets to try to Entangle someone only has a +3 bonus. Teamed up with an ally, they could move to Disarm an opponent while the ally attacks the weaponless victim. Once Tom finishes retraining and if we have him learn Coordinated Maneuvers, their bonus would go up to +10 when it's used. That's pretty damned nice when you consider than an enemy of the same level and strength (3rd in this case), only has a CMD of 14.

Mmmm. No, I kinda lost it there. +2 from Deft Tactics, +2 from Net Maneuvers, +2 from aid another. Where does the other +2 come from?

Or are you adding the full BaB plus strength for +4 instead of the Aid Another to calculate the full CMB?

Nevertheless, we can very easily disable others in a fight. Once the enemy doesn't have a weapon, they can't use attacks of opportunity, and thus we can easily retrieve dropped weapons, which apparently happens with just a move action.

On the other hand, the +2 to disarm that they get from the net, they could get from a bill (I'm assuming they can't use both at the same time to double bonuses), and thus their build, if they don't go for an entangle, becomes redundant.

+3 (BAB) +1 (STR) +2 (DM) +2 (Net) = +8

I wasn't even including the Aid Another bonus. With that and Coordinated Maneuvers, they would be at +12, which might as well be called the Expelliarmus! maneuver.

  • [X] Seek out Ohun and see if he found anything about the person who tried to poison your horses
-[X] Ask Antonio to check with his contacts in the port and markets of Apuku for news of the island and any developments related to Korman or other nearby conflicts. They might be more forthcoming than trying to pry that information from Ohun and less likely to exaggerate or spread untruths like tavern gossips.

Arc 6 Post 17: Crowns and Curses
Of Crowns and Curses

Third Day of the Greensinging 1348 A. L. (After Landfall)

As the skies over Apuku lighten and the stars begin to fade with the coming of the dawn you and Antonio seek to illuminate what had gone on in your absence. Alas there is little luck to be found on either path. Arriving at the palace with Inge for company earns you a swift audience with one of the more senior guards, to judge by the grey in his hair and the gold in his beard, but he brings news that Ohun is not here, not in the city at all.

"He's gone, five nights ago now. I heard it was to seek the counsel of other Stone Keepers, for things have gone ill in the west and the face of Olweje was turned from us this season. Two in three of those who set out to Lirman did not return, their heart blood spilled to the waters, their ships sunk or taken and those who did return speak of an island standing as one behind their new young king Obari. It seems the tail of the scorpion stung poorly this day as well, for none could be moved to treachery."

"I would hardly call it treachery to deny those who are the enemies of all," you cut in sharply, at the implication that you would have lied.

"Count the light in the eye not in the candle's flame," the old soldier shrugs. "The clans of Korman see no Anjo-Oru at their head and only the greed of their neighbors seeking to take advantage of the old king's death."

"And Luaza?" you prompt, recalling Aina's gruesome tale of how she had seen her great grandmother die. "What does the false king say of her death?"

"That her time had finally come to pass quietly into the depths, she was old, the oldest woman on all the islands. She was sent off in a black ship as befits one of the king's house and many hundreds of folk saw her sent off, they claim she looked as one who had died at peace and so the tale that the new king's brother had slain her were not trusted by many."

"It is only a little harder to mend a body than it is any other lifeless thing," Inge speaks up for the first time. "Or they could have even laid a glamor upon the body to make it seem how they wished."

"Be that as it may the clans of Korman stand with the king and the prince, not with their sister as some had hoped when the longships were put to water. Dark have her looks grown and and less and less of her has been seen in the halls, but then little wonder, a stranger dwelling upon the goodwill of her hosts, with naught but a proud name like the call of a hollow horn. Perhaps..." here he hesitates a long moment. "Perhaps she would do better away from the king's halls and all the mead men who look on her with hungry eyes like a three legged dog at a piece of meat fallen before their eyes."

Now that she is likely not worth wedding to the king some of the courtiers are thinking of snapping Aina up themselves then. The thought of the bold young woman who had accompanied you from Korman being handed off to some petty liegeman like a golden ring to adorn their beards sits ill with you, but you are not sure what if anything you might do about it.

Reading your expression the guard says plainly. "You brought her, the king will probably let you take her back as a gift when you present the horse beast you promised."

At that you manage to bite back some choice and most uncomplimentary words... just, and bid the man a curt farewell.

Antonio's news are no better than yours. For one he recounts the nets had been drawn up empty more often than not and the fishermen had cause to blame the king for it. By mischance or malice someone had spread the rumor that the fey had asked that Lina be returned to the sea and her brother would not have it. Worse still from where you are standing... "Fisher folk grumbling isn't the worst of it, there is word going round that Obari of Korman is looking for allies among the other islands. There can't have been a worst time to come into port with a captured raider. I might have to sell her for a third of what she's worth. Might be time to wrap up our business here and head north with the pride, mayhap the waters have cleared by the time with return."

Or mayhap they run red with blood, you think but to not say lest it invoke ill fortune.

What do you do?

OOC: Not the most cheerful return, but that is just the way it goes sometimes. The background rolls were bad all around.

@DragonParadox, Is there time (and availability given the city's current issues) for Antonio to purchase some additional bows for his crew to use, not to mention to sell his cargo and buy stuff more likely to appeal to the northern clans, like what the Pride of Koire is carrying?

I'd much rather sail north now that we have a better idea of the situation.

I'd rather not let things in Apuku get shitter than they already are.

Yes, you will be given the chance to shop and such no matter which you choose, for one Antonio needs to buy trade goods and resupply the ship.

I would rather help him against the daemons if only to get some answers.

If we stay, there will surely be stuff for us to do, but it won't be anything like adventuring. There will be politics and Fey, and if we end up fighting, it will probably be as just one more ship among many in a war against the forces of Korman, the largest and most populous island in the Anwa region. Politics is not necessarily bad, but I'd rather adventure and see new places and new people.

The situation in Apuku is also getting ugly, and I don't want to have to worry about assassination attempts, dealing with clans that have grudges against us, etc.

Well, I'm sorry but I feel that we will face the shadow weaver and its puppets one way or another before this quest is over. I would rather stop them here to minimize the suffering they cause rather than running away for "adventure".

Daemons seem to be winning, I'll vote to go away.
If they are anything like regular daemons they'll get themselves destroyed eventually, bringing up the united mediterran forces against them or something like that.

Yes, but we will leave the island to burn. I would rather stop them here and now before it turns into a war.

I already told you I'd vote for this

Relly are you guys seriously going to leave Apuku to suffer at the hands of the false king? Are you content on a war that will kill countless people to seek more "adventure" rather than stooping our foes here and now.

And I wouldn't worry about court intrigue since Roland has pretty high 16 (+3) Charisma so he can talk his way out of trouble and we have a pair of magic-users Inge and Esha if we run into magic nonsense.

Have fun dealing with daemons!

Why are you guys so Cowardly when faced with daemons huh? We done pretty alright with vampires, dark faes, and mad wizards but faced some daemons? We are content to run away with tails behind our backs.

It doesn't look like its our problem.
We had good reasons to fight the vampire and the Fey ambushed us, we had no choice in that.

I would seek out a daemon to slay, but not an entire army, that's just above our paygrade.

We tried to play as the good guys already. When we tried to save the boar people we became enemies of a whole clan. That was for playing nice and not murdering everyone.

Then we became enemies of this other clan by preventing murder by piracy.

Meanwhile nobody listens to the threat and the few raids going into Daemon territory have failed. No, I won't fight a losing battle, and the Anwa really need to become less assholes to increase their chances to be saved.

Until then, we voted exploration as our goal. I plan to live by that.

It's not just going after adventure, it's exploring new places, meeting new people, and growing stronger.

Personal strength is important in this world, more so than on our Earth, due to the monsters and magic that inhabit it. If you're strong enough to protect yourself and others against those threats, you earn more respect and power, not to mention personal agency. Going north is an opportunity to do just that, away from what promises to be a meat grinder of a war. Either way is dangerous, but at least one is not guaranteed to pit us against a powerful navy united against an enemy, while we ourselves would be fighting with uncertain allies at our backs. Remember, not only are we foreigners here, many could easily blame us for embroiling them in the upcoming war due to events we were involved in on Korman.

Also, we definitely have enemies among the people who are supposed to be our allies. Not even counting that one clan from the western island whose pirates we recently fought, but there are at least two other powerful clans who either outright hate us or wish us ill.

And the Anwa in general are dicks. We've made some friends among them and a useful contact or two, but their culture leaves a lot to be desired. I don't want our people dying for them.

Seriously, dude? This isn't cowardice, it's being realistic.

We're one ship with a double handful of trained combatants, and the highest of us is only level 4. The daemons themselves are well beyond our ability to fight until we grow much stronger and get some better gear, but we could eventually fight them, assuming we get strong enough to do so. The thing is, they're not stupid. By possessing royalty, they have an entire army and island population between them and any threats they might face. We don't have anywhere close to the ability to carve our way through an army to get at the daemons.
