Mainly Volkner. Sunyshore's gym leader. Cynthia too, of course. This route is a pretty important one because it's usually the "last" one trainers travel before having all badges. That makes this worse.

The problem is that this route is also Shinx's natural habitat. That could mean that whomever released them here did it in a misguided attempt at releasing them safely into the wild. Who knows where they are breeding them.

Violet will talk more about the situation in the next update.

Feeding the innocent

    • Your little group moves closer to the now lit fire. The Shinx are on edge following you, but too hungry to flee. Once you are near the light you can see them better. They look weak and even Lily softens up a little, not keeping them away from Violet anymore.

    You get some more food from your backpack for them, and they start eating with the same voracity as before. You are a bit concerned.

    "So… Any idea where do they come from? Shinx aren't usually alone like this." You ask, looking at the two girls. Violet is the first one to talk after taking a closer look at them.

    "They look pretty young. Young enough to still be with their pack. If what you told me about his moves is true… They probably come from a breeding operation." She says softly, a bit sad. Lily now looks a bit angry.

    "A breeding operation." Lily starts to explain. "Is when humans breed hundreds of one species of pokemon trying to find the strongest one. Trying to breed something capable of bringing down a champion. They don't take care of all the «failures», so they release them or…"

    "Kill them." Finishes Violet. "Sometimes they get rid of them so there are no evidence. Breeding so many pokemon is highly illegal. Releasing them disrupts the ecosystem, there are no good ways of taking care of them… So the people that do it… They get rid of them. It's a huge problem in all regions." Violet's gaze was hard. It's the first time you've seen her so serious. She probably knows all of this because of Cynthia. So this is a problem even in Sinnoh?

    "And what about them?" You ask pointing at the three Shinx. They were starting to slow down, full from their first meal in days.

    "Probably freed from a small operation." She started to explain as she searched for something inside her backpack. A burn heal for Lily. She just noticed her burn. "Probably dozens of Shinx were released in this forest. It seems that whomever did it... It's not completely heartless. This is one of their natural habitats and pack pokemon like Shinx usually take care of each other. They could find a larger pack, they are young enough to join an already established one but… This was highly irresponsible and illegal." She started to apply the burn heal to Lily. They don't look happy at all. Lily's demeanor changed from being ready to scare the Shinx away to be ready to attack who did this to them.

    "What can we do?" You ask. You feel bad for them. This is a complicated situation. You can't just capture and take care of every pokemon you find even if you want to… But isn't protecting the region and pokemon the job of a champion? This is also something you will have to do.

    "For now we wait until we arrive at the lake. There I can call Cynthia. Volkner will probably investigate the situation, he is the expert in electric pokemon and knows these routes pretty well…" Violet sighed, frustrated for being unable to help right now. You look at your Poketch. No signal. Too far from civilization to call her now.

    "And these three? They look hungry. They won't survive alone." You look at her and then at them. Maybe you will have to capture them after all? It's a way to help but you don't want to do that.

    "Well. We can take them with us, we can give them some more food and hope they will be okay or…" Violet finishes treating Lily and looks around, standing straighter. Looking for something in the forest around you. "We could find one of the Luxray and ask him to take care of them. The Luxray packs close to civilization are in a truce with humans. Volkner makes sure that this route is safe. Luxray are strong predators… We can probably talk with them."

    "No. We are NOT going to do that." Lily quickly said starting to float in front of Violet. "You are not getting close to a pack of predators even if they have some sort of pact with Volkner. It's too dangerous!" She was… angry? No. Scared. Lily was afraid of what could happen to Violet.

    Violet just stood there in silence, looking down at her feet. She really thought that finding the Luxray was the best option but didn't want to get into an argument with Lily, so she just stood there not knowing what to say.

    You… guess it's your turn to say something.

    The secret choice looks like the obvious one here, to avoid an ambush or maybe chance on a huge potential encounter.

    Otherwise I think tracking a Luxray might be a good, if risky, choice.

    There doesn't really seem to be a reason not to pick this option. Either it's a Luxray already or something that should be dealt with quickly and once that's done we can still decide to hand two of them off to their new Luxparent and keep the one.
     
    Hmm, given our other choices, tracking the Luxray would get us some extra goodwill from the mon on this route; and with the Shinx vouching for us it would probably cut off any major unpleasantness. It would probably upset Lily a bit, but if we explain that we have a plan that will minimize danger, it should keep her opinion of us from lowering, and might even raise it slightly. Have the Shinx track for their older evolutions and verify for them that we're not looking for a fight, we're trying to find someone that can care for the Shinx, and didn't want to just whisk them away without at least seeing if they'd have a chance in the wild.

    So someone that should know better, worse?

    Someone that will be powerful because beaten multiple leaders worse?

    Or hard to question credibility because multiple badges to none worse?

    So just enough knowledge to really screw things up in scenario.

    We need to talk to Violet when Lily isn't listening. Violet is scared of failing Lily and Lily is terrified that she's not strong enough to protect Violet.

    Lily is Violet's Pokémon and so her responsibility- but she needs to know that it isn't or isn't just Lily thinking Violet can't handle herself. It's the fears of an emotion sensing Pokémon that is happy when it's trainer is happy.

    Which implies that they feel it when the trainer is self loathing. Abd this is a Pokémon whose final evolution is basically a powerhouse of a guardian. If one picks a schoolhouse or nursery as it's ground - my reaction in a Pokémon episode would be to feel bad for the sorry fools that enraged the Pokémon by attacking.

    That's the Pokémon that was the one survivor of the attack, that listened to the fallout.

    Especially if Lily was still a Ralts - what is an emotional sensory Pokémon to do when it's trainer, the trainer that hatched it - is reminded of their failure whenever she's around. And the reminder puts Violet into a self loathing mood.

    Lily wasn't able to stop it happening and wasn't able to help Violet recover.

    Remember how Violet was going that the best way to avoid failing her Pokémon was to not be a trainer? Lily is going that the best way to not fail Violet in a fight is never let it get to a fight.

    If this is something stalking the Shinx, capturing it might allow us a chance to make a good impression on the leader of the pack.
