Interesting name. A reference to the hotsprings, perhaps? Or something else entirely that I'm missing?
Returning to civilization, Hunger collected Gisena before making his way to the bounty office. It was time to collect on the Rotspawn he'd killed, though the harvest of power from the creature itself was payment enough in his mind.
Interesting, meeting Gisena was very anticlimatic. And it doesn't look like she accomplished anything while we were gone. How sad! Amusing that Hunger is willing to collect payment after feeling like he's already been paid, but I suppose Tyrant isn't going to get in the way of seizing more for yourself than you would otherwise want.
"What an odd creature," Gisena remarked, poking gingerly at the decapitated head.
Indeed, indeed. And Hunger is going to walk right into this one...
He walked right into that one. Silly Hunger, stop leaving her such massive openings. You might actually win social combat for once!
"Hm?" She raised a finger to her lips. "I can think of a few things! This specimen decided to go hunting for exotic monsters after declaring he'd take a vacation. He then pushed himself so hard that he was slain, returning as a pale wraith to present the trophy of his mutual-kill to a society of strangers!"
...Yeah, that's a pretty good summary of what Hunger managed to pull. We really have to get him to be less suicidally risk-taking about these things or again it isn't going to matter if we reach the end of the quest or not. Unfortunately I don't think the quest is actually able to pull together for this... Poor Hunger, he needs better managers.
"Sounds normal to me," he demurred. "I've always heard geniuses were very adaptable. Failing to pick up on a consistent pattern of behavior, perhaps you're losing your touch."
It is true this is Hunger's standard behavior. I suppose that is why picking Gisena was good for our mental health, though. She's going to push us away from continuing to do this at every meaningful opportunity.
Gisena laughed. "I'm too distracted by all the wondrous technology around! I haven't even had time to complete my meditations..."
Bad Gisena! The technology is cool, but think of how much better it will be after you complete the meditations!
"Speaking of which," she continued, "Letrizia asked us to find a Hot Springs resort to stay in. I did some digging and these two look the most promising. What do you think?"
Hot springs! Finally! ...Shame we're a bit dead to take advantage of them, but I suppose that isn't going to last very long.
She fanned out a pair of pamphlets, one for a starkly modernist resort, the other a decadent eastern-style villa.
Gisena has interestingly varied taste. A modern resort paired with an eastern-style villa? I suppose to her both feel exotic, though.
"This one," he pointed at the latter. "What else are we going to spend the money on?"
Yep, money here isn't important at all. ...Also if we want more we can always just go kill more rotbeasts. We don't have much of a problem with it, and that Primary one was our worst match up so future ones will probably be much less ridiculous of a fight. Still think we should have taken rank there, though.
"Fair enough," Gisena said, walking around to his other side. "Oh, your arm's growing back! First your sword and then your arm, I see you have your priorities in order!"
...I'm not sure if that's in order or if that's backwards. I suppose as long as they all get fixed it doesn't matter very much.
"Would any man choose otherwise?" He deadpanned. "But yes, I slew a monster with four arms. That seems to have granted enough power to overcome the Tyrant's curse and repair my one. I was lucky. It was considerably stronger than I expected."
Indeed, I didn't realize just how dangerous Primary rotspawn could be. I wonder how the entire place hasn't fallen already after how much trouble just the one gave Hunger? But it does explain why they keep getting pushed back.
"Congratulations!" Gisena clapped. "Now we just have to fix your eye, lung, liver and heart and you'll be good as new!"
Sigh, thanks to the liver the list hasn't actually gotten any shorter than it started. Still, the wound to the heart is going to be the hardest one to repair by far.
"...There's nothing wrong with my heart."
Tell the other one, Hunger.
"Heartbreak's a serious condition, you know? And extravagant luxury is just the remedy. Never leave home without it!"
Well, that is a point. Perhaps not the best one, but still probably one Hunger should listen to. We chose Vengeance but that doesn't mean we need to be stupid about it.
The bounty office paid out a generous sum for the Rotspawn's head, noting that it was the first Primary-grade Rotspawn downed in months. Their overawed desk staff beseeched Hunger to campaign against the Rotbeast itself, but he refused.
Sorry, desk guys, you'll never convince Hunger to actually fight the rotbeast. Because he doesn't know how long killing something that insanely large would take. Though I suspect it wouldn't be as long as it might seem otherwise. Cut Through is more than a little ridiculous.
"Turning down a battle? Are you sure you're feeling alright?" Gisena placed a palm on his forehead as if to check for fever.
...Are you trying to check a wraith for a fever, Gisena? Are you feeling alright yourself?
"We've got other priorities; the Temple comes first. Slaying this Rotbeast might be the work of an afternoon, or it could take weeks and months. Targets that big are usually well-fortified or they'd be hollowed out by opportunistic predators."
Makes sense. it's the size of a mountain. It can't be easy to kill or it would already have been killed. Still hope we can come back and clean up later, after the temple though. For now we just need to get there...
"A sensible precaution! Perhaps the creature you killed was also a genius?"
Ha! Unfortunately Hunger's growth is a bit too limited to grab that, Gisena

.
"Given all the things you've claimed a genius can do, I'd be surprised if the category included anyone besides you."
...That wasn't even a trap and Hunger managed to walk right into it. Still, not a bad loss here. Not a bad loss at all.
"Aw! You always know just what to say." Gisena hugged his arm cheerfully.
Probably genuine. How cool! Still not a victory, though. Grrr.
"Speaking of which, how did Letrizia's infiltration mission go?"
Oh, yeah, we know the result but Hunger doesn't.
"She snuck in and pretended to be a transfer student during their lunch hour. It worked well, at least until she got caught! But there weren't any serious consequences. Even out here, provoking the Empire by detaining a duchess would be a bad idea!"
Nice job Letrizia. But boo on you for managing to get caught in under an hour! You should have had them completely believing it for days! Political connections are useful. Who knew?
"The Empire hasn't even bothered sending a team to retrieve their Armament."
Yeah. I'm getting very concerned about that. Something is going on that we are unaware of, and I suspect if we do figure it out the thread is going to be compelled to go rushing off into danger that outscales us just as much as the Temple. Again.
"That we know of," Gisena nodded, "But the separatists don't know that! Why risk making an enemy of the Artriez dynasty over something so petty? The magics here are basically an open secret anyway."
True, they wouldn't know about whatever internal problems the Empire is having, and they would have an idea of what the Empire is capable of if they got pissed off. I would expect the sheer damage Versch has suffered makes it clear something is up, though. But not worth the risk for such a petty violation.
"I haven't heard anything, or seen mages at the front."
To be fair Hunger you weren't exactly looking. You basically just charged straight ahead into insane danger. As normal.
"That's what you have us for! Most of their mages are children, teenagers at the oldest. They practice the manipulation of semi-conceptual forces called Imaginary Elements. The children have given themselves the somewhat presumptuous title of 'High Elementalists.' The Rotbeast began its incursions around when their first Elements manifested, so it's quite a controversial topic!"
Yeah, no way that isn't related. Rotbeast probably wants the magic of the Hot Spring for whatever reason. And man that name for themselves is presumptuous. But I suppose they let the kids name themselves, and that result was utterly inevitable. Perhaps Hunger can convince them that they think too highly of themselves... eh, not worth the time.
"Weren't you planning to call yourself a 'High Sorceress' after completing your meditations?"
This is true, but Gisena has a significant advantage over them in skill and experience before naming herself that!
"Well yes, because I've earned it!" Gisena pouted. "There aren't even any normal Elementalists for these kids to place themselves above!"
Gisena gets it! Also yeah, why name yourself "high elementalists" when there aren't even any elementalists? That just seems silly. Particularly when your particular type of magic isn't very good at finess!
"Matters of self-proclaimed sorcerous nomenclature being of utmost priority to the intellect of a genius like yourself. Even above battlefield fashion, apparently."
Of course? What could possibly be more important, Hunger?
"Don't tease me on this," Gisena's pout intensified, tears shining brilliantly in her eyes. "I've worked hard..."
Gisena is playing you and you are totally going to walk right into it. Well, I suppose that is Hunger for you.
"Hard work doesn't deserve to be teased? I'll remember that," he said, with the tone of a man marking down his ledger.
You fool, Hunger, thinking that that cuts both ways. No no, that only applies to Gisena's hard work and you know it! You shall never be free of the teasing!
"Good!" Gisena chirped, skipping ahead with playful grace. "Now, let's go see the resort. I can't wait to spend your money on such frivolous magnificence!"
And here Gisena celebrates her victory without Hunger even realizing he's lost. How sad. Now the resort is kinda ridiculous, and ridiculously expensive, but hey, money is one thing we don't have issues with right now.
"Who said you were going to? The room will be for me. You may hunt your own Rotbeasts if you'd like to chip in for a suite."
No Hunger, not another round! Your wraith form can't take the blow! You risk being destroyed with every word!
"Don't worry, I'll earn my keep! We'll have Letrizia expense it for us when we get back, so it's really the Empire's money!"
Ah good, continuing to charge the Empire for everything you do as Letrizia's "bodyguards". How mercenary. And hilarious.
"I'll take you statement on credit, but if it falls through then you'll owe it all back, with interest."
Careful Gisena, that's a lot of money! And by then you may not be able to wrap Hunger around your little finger effortlessly anymore!
"Naturally!" She raised two slender fingers. "Maiden's honor!"
Hmmm....
The resort itself was a traditional Eastern-style enclave carved into the mountain at the heart of Elixir territory. Deep within the towering stone was a spring of mystical water heated by geothermal flows. The core pools in which this water accumulated had the highest magical purity, and each five-star Elixir resort held a direct tap to this most pristine of reservoirs. Rumors abounded as to the source of the magic, but according to Gisena, who'd studied a sample of the water, it was a spontaneous manifestation the likes of which occurred from time to time in the Voyaging Realm.
The Voyaging realm is meant for something. We still don't know what, entirely, but this sort of thing makes me redouble my belief that it's a training ground for new cursebearers. Just the right amount of danger with lots of potential sources for new growth, with more ever appearing to make sure that there is always something new.
"I wonder what they'll do when it runs out?"
But in exchange all of these minor sources are finite. They traded having guaranteed magic of certain types for having a guarantee that there will always be something new to learn. An interesting choice, if that was really what it was.
"The water or the magic?"
Is that really a question, Hunger? Water can be renewed. Magic, on the other hand...
"The magic. It looks like it'll last for maybe... sixty more years? It'll peak in strength within the next five and decline steadily afterwards. It's strongest on nights with a full moon. We have waning gibbous, which is the third-most optimal condition..."
Aka it is almost the new moon, now. Only 60 years until they stop getting magic users... unless the magic users kids end up natural magic users. That could allow things to continue even after the spring's magic has dried up.
"Such analytical prowess."
"Only the best for my favorite creditor!"
*ppof* Hunger's wraith form disintegrated, defeated one too many times by Gisena to hold itself together.
The Kaguya, their chosen residence, was considered the most premier lodgings in the entire Sovereignty. Such luxury did not come cheap, but Hunger had little attachment to the currency of this minor nation.
Very true, and very expensive. Not really sure why we picked the expensive one, but eh, it shouldn't matter... hopefully.
Letrizia met them on the tram up to the hotel, excitedly expounding on the magic system she'd discovered while Gisena examined every detail of the tram itself.
Letrizia is really happy to finally have magic, huh? And Gisena continues being distracted by every new piece of technology she sees.
"It's called High Elementalism and each kid has their own unique element, with physical and sometimes magical properties! I asked and they said anyone young enough has a chance to develop it by bathing in the hot springs." Letrizia fidgeted excitedly.
Interesting. Especially given that we know how much water it took Hunger to pull it off with. I wonder if that's a result of Hunger being inefficient about it, or if the kids that develop it naturally already have a talent for magic and spring just awakens it and gives it direction?
"I also got you blood samples from a couple of the stronger mages." She tossed her hair, expression smug. "Boys are so easy to manipulate."
Wow, Letrizia is cruel! But more seriously this is very helpful for Hunger.
He soberly reached out a hand, taking the vials. "Gisena. I fear our charge may be taking the wrong lessons from this experience."
Indeed, indeed. It is time to parent her, and that means she must be disciplines for being mean to those unwary guys!
"Hm?" She looked up from the now-exposed circuitry of the tram's computer. "Oh, yes. Letrizia, don't manipulate boys for gain, or at the very least, let them down gently when you're done."
Come on Gisena, at least try! That isn't you trying!
"Teaming up on me," Letrizia huffed, crossing her arms. "After all the good work I did!"
It's the only way they stood a chance against you, Letrizia, don't be too hard on them.
"Think about it from their perspective," he said sternly. "How would you like it if you were infatuated with someone who only wanted to use you for your blood?"
I don't know why this comment is so funny to me, but it is. Perhaps it's because he's being entirely literal about blood here...
"H-hmph! I can't help if they're throwing themselves at my feet!"
Yes you can! Bottomless chasms!
"A capable Armament pilot lacks even this amount of discipline? I'm surprised."
What is discipline, is it this shiny red button?
"F-flattery will get you nowhere! Besides, y-you're one to talk about lacking discipline. How come you're in ghost form again?"
Cough. But wraith-form isn't a lack of discipline. It's a lack of proper risk assessment!
"That's a lack of wisdom," he answered sagely, "not of self-control. I only endangered my own heart, not those of your innocent classmates. And I got my arm back, so it was completely worth it."
Wisdom, intelligence, wits, and probably just a horribly miscalibrated sense of risk-assessment. That's probably our fault.
"T-they're not even my real classmates!"
Shhh, you know as well as we do that doesn't matter Letrizia. Now go apologize!
Famished after a long day of hunting, espionage, and technological research, the three of them set about immediately to the food service, where a sumptuous repast awaited. Before them were bright crimson shells of freshly steamed lobster set atop a fountain of golden garlic-butter sauce; crisp egg cakes perfectly warmed and daubed with truffle glaze; hand-pressed nigiri artfully arranged with rice-grains glistening like pearls; thick cuts of opulently marbled steak seared openly on the fires; crystal-chilled fruits like jeweled fists translucent; and a cornucopia of lesser fares each superbly executed, containing ingredients of impeccable freshness. It was a vast, indulgent, omnivorous feast and Letrizia sighed in delight, wandering from station to station, hands folded as if in a dream.
Yeah, Hunger has a thing about food. We can probably use that for use the ring to enhance training. By putting his food on the line. Horrifically cruel, but we shall do what we must!
Hunger ate steadily but tirelessly, powering through with superhuman constitution to sample each delicacy in turn, while Gisena cheerfully mooched from their plates, slowly talking the food-addled Letrizia into paying for it all. Delightful as it all was, however, there was still something missing, some inexplicable element that rendered it less than totally satisfying.
Huh, interesting. I wonder what kinda of magical essential is missing that makes a feast this extravagant feel like it is missing something...
Hunger paused with his fork halfway to his mouth. Ah, that was it. Though he'd indirectly hunted for it, he had not caught this meat himself. For all its joys and wonders, this commercial fare just wasn't the same as consuming a fish off one's own line.
Oh. Hunger's just a purist. We did that to him
