For tactics regarding Avecarn, maybe we can play up the fact that we just left recently?
"So I figured I was throwing my life into jeopardy without consummate reward, but when I left to try less lethal things there's this Moon Call thing? Basically, can you reward me for putting my life at risk in a way that doesn't subject me to this Moon Call? It's very annoying and nerfs my Rank, which is something I've worked quite hard on and risked a lot to get to where I have it."
He can probably tell if we lie about the Call. We're immune to it.

My idea is that we fully admit we've been doing this of our own free will. We just fudge our motivation to be getting stronger for vengeance against our true foe. We can probably just go through our litany of losses due to them to drive in why we're willing to go so far. (Entirely true, but leaves out the short-term goal of freeing the ring.)

We tried leaving to look for worthy opponents elsewhere after an incredibly close call, but outgrew them so quickly it became a farse. So we're returning to the temple to continue growing stronger, but this time from a safer position by joining the defense and letting our prey come to us. It will be a bit slower than attacking... but still far faster than trying to hunt outside, and be far safer, so we can ensure we will make it to having our vengeance. When we outscale the place we will leave and that will be that.

Alternatively, we could have Gisena nullify one of their sigils before we apply it to ourselves? It not doing anything to give the game away + us immune to the call anyway would mean that we'd be safe unless anyone inspects even further, which we could probably mask by affixing it beneath the Evening Sky.
Letting them think they are providing us a service seems like it would be important in them thinking we don't have the right motivation to betray them, even if that's a deception.

The issue is his Rank is high enough we aren't going to be able to pass blatant lies by him. So we need everything we say to at least be mostly true. I figure he can understand the motivation of vengeance, given his current life even a fleeting thought of it being taken away...

Better to just have our motivation be growing stronger and money to buy things to aid us in our greater quest.

And we can just state the ring can't offer us anything of value anyway, due to the path we have chosen for our vengeance precluding it. (Can't use two Rings.)

Basically, make the implication that all we were ever after was power, and we are happy to gain it aiding them rather than at their expense, now that we have a better understanding of our place than when we first arrived.

To be fair we're not immune immune to the Moon's call. We still suffer a slight rank penalty while outside the Temple don't we, even if we can obviate it through mediation?

I believe since we got the Chief Domain we've shrugged off the Call entirely. It's no longer on our char sheet.

I may be misremembering, though.

SAVE gang need to lull the Selune posters into false sense of security. All for the purpose of saving Arete. Our precioussss Arete

But if you guys take Avecarn you might have to snapbuy Stances that aren't fitting with your general strategy anyway! Is 4 Arete now really worth spending 14 Arete on Stances that won't pay off for several weeks/months?

Meh, I think the risk is worth it. We've risked more for less anyway. For Hunger to be fine either way is actually a change of pace!

Nah, it refined and clarified the Call but we didn't vote for the bonus at the end of Red of Sky and Fang that would've allowed us to ignore the Rank debuff entirely, so we're still at -0.25 outside the Temple. Imagine how bad it must be for your average moonbrain!

I have a theory as to why Selune is so expensive: evidence points to her being a perfect Azure Ringbearer. Her name means "Moon" in two languages, just like we renamed ourselves to Hunger. Her Evocation is The Lunar, expressing qualities so mystical they predate the Systematization of Seven Seals. She's a blank slate: with tutelage from another Ringbearer she could one day equal us in that field.

If we attempt rebellion, she's the closest thing to a puppet claimant one could hope for. Insurgencies always go better with those. To free the Azure Ring but keep it under control of a known, subservient party would also preserve much of their civilization, possibly even improving it by way of a now-willing Ring. Reduced moral dilemma would allow Hunger to save his sword and willpower for those few who continue to defend the Ring's imprisonment.

Tyranny might be an issue, but can potentially be worked around. If we begin by asserting her as our apprentice as a Ringbearer and subordinate as a ruler, we can promote her directly before her people as a time-saving measure. This means that in practice we would not be conquering the Temple, but rather delegating the process to her and assisting only in an instructive or protective role. This neatly avoids ever having to personally acknowledge that the Temple's regime even exists, let alone ought be preserved in some manner.

For Sliver of Evening fans, this is a convenient position to take. Perfect mitigation of a single moment of Tyranny would make supporting her much easier, and make her less dependent on Gisena's advice for avoiding the Doom.

Ah, good to know.

Still think playing up the call is probably the wrong move against the Marshal, though. I suspect he'll be less inclined to disbelieve us if we admit we're here to get stronger.

Frak. Hopefully it's not too late for last minute switches/reactions. If this works it'd be farking amazing.

Avecarn: Why have you assaulting the Temple son?
Hunger: I want to become stronger.
Avecarn: This is not the only reason. I can feel that.
Hunger: I also want to fish
Avecarn: Well that convinced me, come on in

Honesty(but misleading) is the best policy

If you're offering, it would make me really happy!

Aight, let's do this.

The main inspirations are your name and the periods which dinosaurs live.

Sorry this took so long.

The Emanations of Age:

With age comes both change and unending might. A system meant to enable those with fleeting lives it truly shines in those who live eventfully. As such, those who do not fear death from time cannot benefit from it.

As a practitioner lives they gain Emanations based upon each of the stages of their lives. The stages can vary from their stages of development or even to periods of differing beliefs and values. In any case the stages primarily originate from a somewhat prophetic auxiliary ability that decides on the form based on what would benefit the practitioner the most.

As per the name all abilities are based primarily on Emanations with any inward focus such as personal healing being a side effect of the Emanation. They vary on overall power through how significant each stage was personally, and externally. A man for example who lives a uneventful life with states based on his stages of development would receive a mild healing aura for his childhood, and the use of small fiery projectiles for his adulthood. Sasuke Uchiha on the other hand would have his stages revolves around his world views, and would receive white robes for his youth before the massacre to signify his innocence and give him the capacity to aid others emotionally and spiritually, his later childhood and teenage years would be in the form of a bloodstained robe which bolsters him with the extent varying on his negative emotions, and his sheer drive.

The final abilities of the Emanations of Age come from catastrophe, if when a Doom approaches the practitioner and if they seek to put a stop to it with no concern given to themselves, they may sacrifice their stages permanently to elevate the capabilities of each stage sacrificed with more power coming from the more stages being sacrificed overall. If all was placed upon the Altar that dull man could reverse crippling injuries within seconds, and launch blasts of searing heat mighty enough to rip through buildings as if they were chaff. Afterwords, he would collapse dead his very life, and history put to flame. If a practitioner chooses to not burn all his stages they would find their life a misery as the memories of the stages they sacrifice would lose their meaning to them, old friends and foes alike would be treated as if they were strangers.

Induction into the Emanations of Age need to be done even before the birth of the child with any form of Emanation needed to be near the fetus in development in order to create a seed of potential in the child.

Such seeds of potential may be manifested in nearly anything as my as its conceptually coming into existence. For that reason anything with a finite lifespan may have stages. A entire race might generate multiple stages based upon their technology levels or even their unity. In such a scenario their Emanations would only be activated on the collective will of that race if the Emanation requires a conscious use. For any other thing with a seed of potential without any conscious thought their Emanations would be entirely passive in nature.

Edit: So many typos.

Archetypal Classhood and Emanations of Age have both been added to the Quester Magics sheet.

Reaction written on the tail end of Fleeting Respite. Word count once I Libreoffice.(Edit: 978 words)

I presume this is a reference to the magical power of the hot springs.

Returning to civilization, Hunger collected Gisena before making his way to the bounty office. It was time to collect on the Rotspawn he'd killed, though the harvest of power from the creature itself was payment enough in his mind.
Best you don't share that with the people at the Bounty office Lord Hunger.

"What an odd creature," Gisena remarked, poking gingerly at the decapitated head.

"What's odd about it?"

"Hm?" She raised a finger to her lips. "I can think of a few things! This specimen decided to go hunting for exotic monsters after declaring he'd take a vacation. He then pushed himself so hard that he was slain, returning as a pale wraith to present the trophy of his mutual-kill to a society of strangers!"
Bait and switch Gisena? You were poking the decapitated head of a rotspawn. Also, there's room to argue here philosophically about whether or not Lord Hunger actually dies when he's killed if he becomes a wraith, given he maintains continuity of consciousness.

"Sounds normal to me," he demurred. "I've always heard geniuses were very adaptable. Failing to pick up on a consistent pattern of behavior, perhaps you're losing your touch."
Oh but Lord Hunger, you're such a master of pattern recognition I thought you would have realized, that's just not my style. *abridged Kirito voice*

Gisena laughed. "I'm too distracted by all the wondrous technology around! I haven't even had time to complete my meditations..."

So basically, Gisena is as much of a procrastinator as some of the people in Lord Hunger's brain can be. She probably just burned her Rihakuverse protagonist card by saying it. It's ashes, the ashes are floating down to earth, and they are saying "I don't have the attention span to be a Rihaku protagonist".

"Speaking of which," she continued, "Letrizia asked us to find a Hot Springs resort to stay in. I did some digging and these two look the most promising. What do you think?"
One of them is the Streamline and the other one is the Kaguya. It's crazy expensive, but it's not like there's anybody worth hir... oh wait. Shadowcord.

She fanned out a pair of pamphlets, one for a starkly modernist resort, the other a decadent eastern-style villa.

"This one," he pointed at the latter. "What else are we going to spend the money on?"
Mercenaries. Highly useful mercenaries whether we pay them to absorb their element or they help us hide from the enemy.

"Fair enough," Gisena said, walking around to his other side. "Oh, your arm's growing back! First your sword and then your arm, I see you have your priorities in order!"
Our priorities are an inscrutable enigma predictable by no human being Gisena. That's probably why the inner council couldn't use divination on us. Our motivations are essentially random.

"Would any man choose otherwise?" He deadpanned. "But yes, I slew a monster with four arms. That seems to have granted enough power to overcome the Tyrant's curse and repair my one.
So basically, it's not quite "You keep what you kill".

I was lucky. It was considerably stronger than I expected."

"Congratulations!" Gisena clapped. "Now we just have to fix your eye, lung, liver and heart and you'll be good as new!"
Heart? There you go again with weird symbolic comments that are uncomfortably close to the truth. Those symbolic comments are sidling up to the truth, the truth is trying to push them away, and then a fight scene starts like it's the Matrix.

"...There's nothing wrong with my heart."

"Heartbreak's a serious condition, you know? And extravagant luxury is just the remedy. Never leave home without it!"
Yeah we're quite a few Arete away from being able to actually pull that off by getting Pillars of Creation.

The bounty office paid out a generous sum for the Rotspawn's head, noting that it was the first Primary-grade Rotspawn downed in months. Their overawed desk staff beseeched Hunger to campaign against the Rotbeast itself, but he refused.
This is almost enough to make me regret voting for the school option. Only a little. Edeldross was totally worth it and seeing so many updates where I was fine with basically whatever winning was great.

"Turning down a battle? Are you sure you're feeling alright?" Gisena placed a palm on his forehead as if to check for fever.

"We've got other priorities; the Temple comes first. Slaying this Rotbeast might be the work of an afternoon, or it could take weeks and months. Targets that big are usually well-fortified or they'd be hollowed out by opportunistic predators."
We're probably swole enough to do it quickly now, unfortunately that's going to be doomed to an afterthought if we do it at all.

"A sensible precaution! Perhaps the creature you killed was also a genius?"
It's not quite "You keep what you kill" Gisena.

"Given all the things you've claimed a genius can do, I'd be surprised if the category included anyone besides you."

"Aw! You always know just what to say." Gisena hugged his arm cheerfully.
I wonder how much of Gisena's ego is real and how much of it is an affectation?

"Speaking of which, how did Letrizia's infiltration mission go?"

"She snuck in and pretended to be a transfer student during their lunch hour. It worked well, at least until she got caught! But there weren't any serious consequences. Even out here, provoking the Empire by detaining a duchess would be a bad idea!"

"The Empire hasn't even bothered sending a team to retrieve their Armament."

"That we know of," Gisena nodded, "But the separatists don't know that! Why risk making an enemy of the Artriez dynasty over something so petty? The magics here are basically an open secret anyway."
The magics here are also farking awesome, and I would have been curious to see what a 25 point element would be.

"I haven't heard anything, or seen mages at the front."

"That's what you have us for! Most of their mages are children, teenagers at the oldest. They practice the manipulation of semi-conceptual forces called Imaginary Elements. The children have given themselves the somewhat presumptuous title of 'High Elementalists.' The Rotbeast began its incursions around when their first Elements manifested, so it's quite a controversial topic!"
So basically it's Evangelion, Worm, A Certain Magical Index, we have entered very throughly into animeland.

"Weren't you planning to call yourself a 'High Sorceress' after completing your meditations?"

"Well yes, because I've earned it!" Gisena pouted. "There aren't even any normal Elementalists for these kids to place themselves above!"
You still need to complete those Gisena, you haven't earned the title yet. It's not time for your moment of supreme fabulosity where you pull a Kars. I'll still be ready with the Avalon background music though when you do.

"Matters of self-proclaimed sorcerous nomenclature being of utmost priority to the intellect of a genius like yourself. Even above battlefield fashion, apparently."
I think I figured out what analogizes to Gisena's mindset properly. Hardcore players of massively multiplayer online role playing games.

"Don't tease me on this," Gisena's pout intensified, tears shining brilliantly in her eyes. "I've worked hard..."
You still haven't broken through yet though Gisena. You're probably procrastinating as much as some of the voters in Lord Hunger's brain.

"Hard work doesn't deserve to be teased? I'll remember that," he said, with the tone of a man marking down his ledger.

"Good!" Gisena chirped, skipping ahead with playful grace. "Now, let's go see the resort. I can't wait to spend your money on such frivolous magnificence!"
See, it's stuff like this that makes me want to give Gisena the ring of the false moon so they can get into an actually, relatively balanced kismessitude.

"Who said you were going to? The room will be for me. You may hunt your own Rotbeasts if you'd like to chip in for a suite."

"Don't worry, I'll earn my keep! We'll have Letrizia expense it for us when we get back, so it's really the Empire's money!"

"I'll take you statement on credit, but if it falls through then you'll owe it all back, with interest."

"Naturally!" She raised two slender fingers. "Maiden's honor!"
More of the recurring money jokes here.

The resort itself was a traditional Eastern-style enclave carved into the mountain at the heart of Elixir territory. Deep within the towering stone was a spring of mystical water heated by geothermal flows. The core pools in which this water accumulated had the highest magical purity, and each five-star Elixir resort held a direct tap to this most pristine of reservoirs. Rumors abounded as to the source of the magic, but according to Gisena, who'd studied a sample of the water, it was a spontaneous manifestation the likes of which occurred from time to time in the Voyaging Realm.
This explains the title of High Glades. It's both a high altitude due to the mountain, expensive to get into, and the water literally has supernatural power.

"I wonder what they'll do when it runs out?"

"The water or the magic?"

"The magic. It looks like it'll last for maybe... sixty more years? It'll peak in strength within the next five and decline steadily afterwards. It's strongest on nights with a full moon. We have waning gibbous, which is the third-most optimal condition..."
More lunar thematics... hopefully we'll have killed the rotbeast by then. I wonder if the Lunar phase would have been retroactively different for optimal conditions if we had more Arete to get a 25 pointer?

"Such analytical prowess."

"Only the best for my favorite creditor!"
Do you hear the cleaving call? I certainly hear it.

The Kaguya, their chosen residence, was considered the most premier lodgings in the entire Sovereignty. Such luxury did not come cheap, but Hunger had little attachment to the currency of this minor nation.

Letrizia met them on the tram up to the hotel, excitedly expounding on the magic system she'd discovered while Gisena examined every detail of the tram itself.
This may lead to Gisena founding Aperture Science later but right now she's gotten distracted by shinies throwing off her meditation. Odyssial she is not.

"It's called High Elementalism and each kid has their own unique element, with physical and sometimes magical properties! I asked and they said anyone young enough has a chance to develop it by bathing in the hot springs." Letrizia fidgeted excitedly.
Yep. We are definitely in anime land. You can almost see the lines forming on peoples bodies and the phantom artist brushes. Hopefully we'll never end up seeing photoshop windows because they decided to go in the direction of Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff. That would be terrible. Anyplace under the kind of physics that would make that comics world make sense is not hospitable to human life.

"I also got you blood samples from a couple of the stronger mages." She tossed her hair, expression smug. "Boys are so easy to manipulate."

He soberly reached out a hand, taking the vials. "Gisena. I fear our charge may be taking the wrong lessons from this experience."

"Hm?" She looked up from the now-exposed circuitry of the tram's computer. "Oh, yes. Letrizia, don't manipulate boys for gain, or at the very least, let them down gently when you're done."

"Teaming up on me," Letrizia huffed, crossing her arms. "After all the good work I did!"

"Think about it from their perspective," he said sternly. "How would you like it if you were infatuated with someone who only wanted to use you for your blood?"
In what sense? This could be interpreted a lot of ways, somebody exploiting Letrezia for her money, Letrezia meeting a vampire, etc.

"H-hmph! I can't help if they're throwing themselves at my feet!"

"A capable Armament pilot lacks even this amount of discipline? I'm surprised."

"F-flattery will get you nowhere! Besides, y-you're one to talk about lacking discipline. How come you're in ghost form again?"
I led a quirky ragtag band of guerillas, I was never a real military leader. Military Discipline! Hah!

"That's a lack of wisdom," he answered sagely, "not of self-control. I only endangered my own heart, not those of your innocent classmates. And I got my arm back, so it was completely worth it."
That makes sense in more ways than one. Hopefully we get another shot at Philosopher's Wreath or Rune King. Lord Hunger is a quintessential example of intelligence without wisdom, otherwise he would never have exhausted himself fishing that fateful day so long ago.

"T-they're not even my real classmates!"
Lapsing into tsundere mode already?

Famished after a long day of hunting, espionage, and technological research, the three of them set about immediately to the food service, where a sumptuous repast awaited. Before them were bright crimson shells of freshly steamed lobster set atop a fountain of golden garlic-butter sauce; crisp egg cakes perfectly warmed and daubed with truffle glaze; hand-pressed nigiri artfully arranged with rice-grains glistening like pearls; thick cuts of opulently marbled steak seared openly on the fires; crystal-chilled fruits like jeweled fists translucent; and a cornucopia of lesser fares each superbly executed, containing ingredients of impeccable freshness. It was a vast, indulgent, omnivorous feast and Letrizia sighed in delight, wandering from station to station, hands folded as if in a dream.
This is good food porn and I would totally speak of it in the same breath as what I remember of Fate Stay Night and George RR Martin's work.

Hunger ate steadily but tirelessly, powering through with superhuman constitution to sample each delicacy in turn, while Gisena cheerfully mooched from their plates, slowly talking the food-addled Letrizia into paying for it all. Delightful as it all was, however, there was still something missing, some inexplicable element that rendered it less than totally satisfying.
The approach to food is like the approach to fighting. It says something about the characters.

Hunger paused with his fork halfway to his mouth. Ah, that was it. Though he'd indirectly hunted for it, he had not caught this meat himself. For all its joys and wonders, this commercial fare just wasn't the same as consuming a fish off one's own line.
As much of a massive screwup as catching that fish was, it apparently gave great characterization milage.

Two days at the resort and then it's back to the Temple for Hunger & Co. What is his general strategy for dealing with the Inner Temple?

[ ] Farm, then Clear - Challenge those in the Encampment to duels; if victorious, proceed to attack the Middle Temple until Outrider patrols are exhausted; if victorious, proceed to attack the Inner Temple. Combat will hone the edge of his prowess in his new magic.

May theoretically encounter useful allies

Chances can be improved by tactics

Hunger's estimated risk assessment for the first stage:

*60% chance of uneventful victory

*20% chance of challenging opposition (enter battle or 1+ conditions)

*20% chance of potent opposition (enter battle or 1+ major conditions)
Lord Hunger's estimates are not reliable. Also, this may or may not be too practical. Why get an array fetch modus when you could use an array of queuestacks instead, they are so much easier to weaponize than boring array modii.

[ ] Offensive Bias - You've dithered long enough. Cut through.

Discounts Once and Future by 1 Arete

+5% Effectiveness in battle, improves Rank gains from battle.

Hunger's estimated risk assessment:

*40% chance of uneventful victory

*15% chance of potent foe (1 major condition)

*35% chance of peer-level foe (enter battle)

*5% chance of overwhelming foe (enter battle)

*5% chance of stupendously dangerous foe (enter battle and prepare to die)
Nope. Too dangerous and sets off my Faust Alberich/Valeria Trifa alarm bells.

[ ] Stay and Train [-1 Arete] - Though it physically pains him to do so, it's best to get reasonably familiar with his new powers before challenging the Temple. Letrizia's hangers-on are more than willing to spar with Hunger, and by wagering days of service he can mitigate the penalty for non-lethal sparring. May also represent an opportunity to recruit more manpower, though the ethical considerations are potentially fraught...

*Letrizia's new friend group is mostly composed of juniors and seniors, aged 17-18. Too young for war in Hunger's eyes, and support positions are difficult to make feasible given the nature of 'High Elementalism.' That said, there are those among them who possess Elements of incredible utility.

*You can get more party members by having them run away from home to join you.

*Hunger is considerably more adept at controlling his Element than he otherwise would be.
This is the Queuestack route. It turned out surprisingly well in hindsight.

What is the Imaginary Element of duchess Letrizia Artriez?

[ ] Sharpbright - The sharp bright sword of will that brings mere physical law to heel! A focused form of Pressure itself that allows Letrizia to improve her effective Rank in situations where being "sharp" or "bright" would be relevant. Both literal and metaphorical interpretations fall within its remit. With sufficient control, Letrizia can even permanently increase her actual Rank by such means, though this is a slow and arduously difficult process...

*Doesn't work if she tries to buff other people, though she can still fight on the same side as other units with Rank

*Reaching the apex of Low Rank is trivial, reaching the apex of Middle Rank extremely difficult, and anything involving High Ranks involves legendary levels of mastery

*Allows her to advance her research into the nature of Pressure and Astral Rank!
We could have taken Philosopher's wreath for truly ludicrous gains out of this. Oh well. We'll probably see interesting returns out of this once we've forgotten it exists.

[ ] Exavolt - A tremendously versatile and staggeringly powerful energy that would actually be relevant in combat even at your scale. Combining broad varieties of electromagnetic force with the concept of excessive scale, this would allow Letrizia to easily defend herself in combat from the Astral Beasts currently attacking Verschlengorge, and can eventually develop into wide-ranging control of magnetism, visible light, gamma radiation, microwaves, and so on.

*Substantially increases Verschlengorge's effective firepower

*While many noncombat applications are possible, almost all require extensive mastery to pursue

*Far more capable in physical combat than an equivalent level of Sharpbright

This is basically giving Letrezia a sizable chunk of Amplitude/turning her into the Rihakuverse scale version of Misaka Mikoto. I can practically hear Only My Railgun playing when I read this.

This may have been covered already, but why aren't folks considering using Gisena as a way to talk to Avecarn? We can truthfully say that we're denied whole categories of social interaction by a curse laid upon us, and she's a walking talking memetic hazard (particularly if she gets her breakthrough in time).

Imagine talking to Avecarn and passing that tribulation.

Dude is a gardener.

I might be reaching out of my ass here but that sounds eerily familiar to a skill that starts with G and ends with ardener's Hallow.
