Yup, Ruling Ring will upgrade all of your options should you get it! Given the risks involved, you'll have to carefully judge when to get it, however. Beyond just budgetary concerns there is the unknown risk level of the contest of primacy!

We can just get War Preeminence now so we benefit from it and then head into the contest when we think we are ready. That might even be right away!

[ ] Visit the Encampment - Once Gisena is finished with her meditations and the Forebear's Blade finishes its regeneration, visit the Encampment, allowing her to take point on social interactions. The potential benefits are vast, but some degree of risk is still present. There's much to do, though the mercenaries present may not offer as much comparative value as they once did.
-[ ] Visit the Official Fishing Contest [+1 Arete, +progress towards next +1 pick option] - Fight hard. Fish harder.
NO. Any strenuous exertion in the next three days will provoke severe damage. This is a terrible idea.
-[ ] Do Not Visit the Fishing Contest - The temptation is too great. Discipline must prevail.
Could be a good idea? The risk is minimal, at this point, but the potential reward is way lower too. Still, getting some companions with abilities that synergize with ours could always be useful?
[ ] Slack Off - It feels unnatural, but perhaps the best option is to focus intensely on rest and recuperation. In this as in all things, execution makes the result.

+??
Maybe? Hunger does need some rest and recuperation, right now...
[ ] Heal Verschlengorge - Though physical activity strains you, once you're rested there's nothing stopping you from using the Ring of Blood. Work with Letrizia in an attempt to restore Verschlengorge's power, at least in part. Perhaps you can pick up some marginal improvements from the stronger monsters it attracts.
There's some risk that this end up counting as strenuous activity but we will need to restore Verschlengorge's power at some point and getting a bit more power before returning to the Temple certainly isn't a bad idea.
[ ] Vacation - You don't want to go to the Encampment, but it would be nice to partake in civilization somewhere. Heal Verschlengorge with a focus on its navigational abilities and look for something fun and relatively safe. While you are determined to free the Imprisoned Ring, in your current state there simply isn't much that can be done for it.

*Consumes more time than the other options
*+Gisena, +Letrizia
*Gain +0.5 Arete, inane tasks sidequests
Consume too much time, for my tastes. The benefits are real but I don't think it's a good idea.
[ ] Forebear's Blade - Echo of the Forebear - Cloud-shadow of the Forebear's might.
Legendary strength and speed, and the resilience to exert them. Can be taken multiple times. [+Might, +Agility]
Stats are always good, but it get overshadowed by the blood buffs at this point.
[ ] The Ring of Power - Dominion - 2 Arete
A ring of power does not exert influence casually. It has its own will, its own preferences, and if that will should be inseparable from its owner's, its sway thereby shall be greater for it.

Select a domain of influence. While acting within its domain, [Ring of Power] effects are substantially less taxing and more potent; the effects of this can be abstracted as follows: treat the owner's Rank as if it somewhat* higher for related actions. You may select this advancement multiple times, choosing a different domain each time. If multiple domains apply, their bonuses do not compound.

*+0.5 if Low, +.25 if Mid, +.1 if High.

The available domains for Hunger are: War, Passion
Advance us towards the ring. The benefit of Dominion: War of +.25 Rank while fighting for one pick and 2 Arete isn't even a bad deal...
[ ] Fierce Quickening - The absurd violence of Blood unleashed. Let all that falls within its dominion be spilled, if it be in service to the Ringbearer. Adds [++Agility, +Wits] to the bonuses from Quickening, subject to the usual conditions. Can be taken up to 3 times.
Blood buff, it's good.
[ ] Vigor Itself - The primordial might and glory of Blood resplendent. Let all who witness its form tremble, and be subject. Adds [++Might, +Charisma] to the bonuses from Quickening, subject to the usual conditions. Can be taken up to 3 times.
Another blood buff. It's also good, though the penalty to Charisma +s decreased it's value somewhat.
[ ] Augment Dominion: Blood - The world-wielding will of the Ring.
Treat the wielder's Rank as if it were (.5 Low/.25 Medium/.1 High) higher for purposes of the [Ring of Power] effect applied to the Blood domain, increasing its potency and versatility. Repeatable, but costs 1 more pick each time.
The benefits are a little to narrow to my taste.
[ ] Evening Sky - Opalescence - The soft light of evening before which all attacks falter.
Improves defensive parameters. [+Protection]
Not a blood buff and it's value is diminished by the penalty to Protection +s, pass.
[ ] Evening Sky - Iridescence - 2 Arete - The sharp light of the stars before which all malice is lessened.
+Protection, +Charisma. Expands the range of effects subject to the Evening Sky, allowing it to passively weaken almost all forms of magic. Even Nullity itself can be once withstood before the Sky recedes.
We can't actually pick this without Opalescence.
[ ] Exalted Spirit - 2 Arete. Conjunctional [Hunger, Evening Sky]. Mind made vigorous as the body. Gain +Int, +Wits, +Wis, +Cha, -Heartlessness, while in a form with physical blood. Allies under blood enhancement gain +Int, +Cha. Blood enhancement requires physical blood.
Pretty incredible value, but it doesn't really give us anything particularly useful for surviving the rest of the Temple.
[ ] Null Slice - 7 Arete. Conjunctional [Hunger, Gisena]. ++Wits, ++AGI. Severs a conceptual aspect from the target. Resistable. More abstract and difficult concepts are much harder to strike and may induce Tiredness or Exhaustion in the attempt. While this offers minimal power now, it can potentially lead to a wide variety of applications with time and training. Discounts either [Once and Future] or [Cut Through] by 2 Arete.
7 Arete for an ability that offer only minimal immediate power and doesn't even advance us towards the Ring? Hard pass. Maybe after we've got the Ruling Ring?

For now, I'll go for this:

[X] Heal Verschlengorge
[X] The Ring of Power - Dominion
-[X] War

Yup, Ruling Ring will upgrade all of your options should you get it! Given the risks involved, you'll have to carefully judge when to get it, however. Beyond just budgetary concerns there is the unknown risk level of the contest of primacy!
YOLT
The benefits are a little to narrow to my taste.
Remember, Blood does a ton - healing, buffing, debuffing etc. It's arguably better than War; lack of 2Arete cost can be chalked up to Progression+

Slack off isn't looking good, so it was between this and fishing, since I think vacation costs too long timewise. After thinking about it i'm pretty sure Hunger could balance the struggle of the play in the line in short enough bursts to not aggravate his condition, but healing is also a pretty good use of our time, something we'll have to do eventually anyway so now when other choices are constrained and the new monsters won't be extremely dangerous to Gisena anymore is a good pick. Plus we might pick up a small bit of experience

Apparently Rings of Power(i.e. Hunger is Ring of Blood) and Ruling Rings are different things. It would seem that Ruling Rings work on "there can only be one" logic - as such upgrading our Ring can cause us to challenge whatever currently holds Ruling Ring(Astral Lord?), as we are likely to mess with their own Ring.

Before we go into the contest, given the kind of metaphysical and spiritual fight it'll almost certainly be, I'd rather pick up some more +Willpower and Rank.

Consume too much time, for my tastes. The benefits are real but I don't think it's a good idea.

Keep in mind, we're pretty much done for the next three days. Spending more time on this rather than the others doesn't matter because none of them will do any real fighting in the immediate term anyway. I think the benefits of +0.5 Arete, +Relationships and potentially finding some treatment for Lingering Paralysis (which is -15% to our physical attributes) would be worth the costs involved.

Fanwork#1833 Words
Like Hunger used to, Vanreir also has a much more powerful Form of Rage. That's what the title means, right?

No? Good, that would be the worst, he wouldn't even have any blood.
Hunger trudged wearily out of the Temple, kicking up clouds and eddies of dust with his ragged, irregular stride. He had the speed and strength of two hundred men, and the physical resilience to support that power, but the bone-deep exhaustion from his fight with Amarlt left his pace slow and tremulous. The swordsmaster had been by far the mightiest outrider that he'd crossed paths with, and only his last-minute gambit with the Ring had torn victory from the clutches of death.
I see that edit there, I thought it was odd that Hunger was at 50x speed and strength still, because that was so three days ago. 200x is more in line with where I thought we were. And its enough that we're causing small dust kabooms by slowly staggering to safety. Physics just aren't the same when you have superpowers... or they are, and that just makes it weirder! Pretty soon the ground isn't going to be strong enough to support us, so our running speed will no longer be a function of Str and Agi. Actually, Fall of Night is probably helpful for going fast, keeping us on the ground so we can more easily avoid moon jumping or having to do goofy Naruto runs.

Interesting that he doesn't notice the kidney damage until later if his stride is irregular now, but it's not like he wasn't stabbed in the eye, the heart, caught red-handed, and generally beat to shit, so he gets a pass.

When you talk about how impressive Vanreir is you sound like a veteran outrider slayer, but you can stop putting on airs, we all know you just started with this.
He'd tangled with a few more outriders on his path of retreat, but they were no more skilled than the goldenrod archer. Refreshingly, they fell quickly to his standard feints and tactics, requiring barely more exertion than the ghostly Knights. Though he'd not fully absorbed the power from the Amarlt's defeat, perhaps it was already paying dividends. Despite the weariness, in some respects his mind and body actually felt sharper.
Yes, of course, luckily you only encountered cannon fodder enemies on the level of those that had a 35%? chance of killing you yesterday, leaving you partially paralyzed for weeks. Training standards have truly fallen, can't these guys decuple their strength in 30 hours? You snooze you lose, unless you're Hunger, in which case you only win more. Really, though, progression-types are unfair.

I love that even when Hunger is fighting yesterday's enemies, he's still old and treacherous about it. Even if it might have been better to start with Echoes instead of Nightmare Praetor, I love playing a character who gives off such a good-at-things vibe.

Hunger has noticed that his body has become sharper, which perfectly explains why he now has a Charisma mauls! 6/10, elbows too pointy.
Even so, he could go no further today. Slowly he made his way to Verschlengorge, catching Letrizia in the middle of a skirmish against a pack of Astral Beasts. Exhausted as he was, still his power eclipsed these rabble utterly. With a brief exertion he appeared before them, linear slice like a sudden horizon bisecting their angular frames. They chittered and fell over, green blood spouting furiously from their bodies as they slowly succumbed.
Slowly he zoomed at not-even-hypersonic yet speeds, what a scrub.

It's nice to see that Letrizia wasn't bored, but the party's over now that Hunger's here. He kills all the baddies, but I can't help but wonder if he feels kinship for their pointy-bodiedness. You, too, are becoming as ugly as an Astral Beast.

Slashing people like the horizon is my favorite description ever. Good night, everything I see dies. You don't actually see him move, of course, the screen just goes black before a slash appears, because ++Budget was not included in the All Stats.
He frowned. Though the Ring had healed his wounds of the body, something about his restored liver felt slightly off. Had Amarlt's first blow struck also at his spirit? In the heat of battle he'd hardly noticed, but the organ seemed somewhat frailer than before. His healed eye appeared to have avoided any complications, but that had been a shallow thrust, while the swordsman's first strike had pierced cleanly through.
Ah, he was still healing on the run back, that explains it.

It doesn't matter now that Amarlt is dead, but I guess retroactively all of his strikes were capable of spirit damage. Scary guy. I'm incredibly pleased by this complication (what a thing to say), because exhaustion is horrible. And if we took the -40% to social stats on top of the .7 multiplier, we'd never recover from how thoroughly and sublimely Gisena would out-banter us. You want a real devastating complication, there it is.
He would have Gisena take a look when she was finished. He was fortunate not to have taken many true wounds from the battle with Vanreir, despite how taxing it had been. It was a tired cliche that a duel between experts could easily be decided by a single wound, but true nonetheless. In that sense his stroke had cut deeper, though he'd been outclassed both in power and skill. And yet sometimes that was the way of the world. Circumstance was a weapon no less deadly for the fact that it was profoundly unfair.
Dammit, Hun, I'm a magician, not a doctor. Green eyes activate... as expected, it's fucked. The professional opinion of a genius is don't get stabbed.

And it seems like Vanreir's level did retroactively increase, which is the best of both worlds for Hunger. He gets to be both badass and alive.

I can't believe Hunger has the audacity to call winning with a single blow that tells a "tired cliche" with all the Forebear juice we've been guzzling recently. Power? Skill? Nothing compared to the power of the Accursed, even in a, uh, ring. Wait, are we the waifu here? We... did make a promise to him, didn't we.

Nice nod to Liefang, the master of circumstance, the most cynical idealist I ever did see. Admire him, but from a distance. Thank god he didn't have Rank, now that would be unfair.
"You're back early!" Letrizia's cheerful voice boomed over her Armament's speakers. "Also, no stealing my targets! I've got to stay in shape somehow!"

"Oh? I thought I was your bodyguard. Going to prevent me from fulfilling my duties?"

"Gotta stay sharp so I can defend myself!" Verschlengorge punched the air energetically. "Else, I'll be paying for bodyguards forever!"

"Ah, they grow up so fast..."

"Anyway, how was it today? Did you make good progress?"

"In a sense." He sat, leaning the Forebear's Blade against a boulder. Briefly he allowed his eyes to slip closed. The daytime sun bore down relentlessly, but the pull of slumber was stronger still, soft undertow of thoughtless dreams...
Lots of silly juxtapositions in this update, I love it. Letrizia justly calls out Hunger being an XP-stealing meanie, and it's clear that Hunger's pointy elbows are responsible for him losing a banter to Zee. We have to get our Charisma back, it's like priority on-, well, like priority twenty. But it's on the list!

First on the list is a nap, he earned it.
"Wait, is that... ?" Verschlengorge loomed above, its inquisitive face blocking out sun and sky.

His eyes opened blearily. "Hm?"

"A-ah! Sorry, never mind! It's not a big deal. I didn't see you were trying to sleep."

"Don't worry about it. More enemies?" He scanned the horizon swiftly, cloak swirling about as he began to rise.

"No, nothing like that. Go back to sleep! Hehe. Today it's my turn to guard both you and Miss Gisena!"

"Were you looking at my sword?" He raised an eyebrow.

"I-I was just surprised! Did you find a blacksmith or something?"
The giant robot looks inquisitive. I was going to ask if even facial expressions are transmitted, and if all the faces do the same thing for incredible spooktacularity, but then I realized you can just tilt your head, and it's more anime besides. Still terrifying, so Hunger's paranoia is understandable.

Smh, only a kid would be so excited about getting to be the grown up, but this isn't at all bad. Letrizia's cuteness is overwhelming, I'm suspicious that it's the primary stat used for robot piloting.

The appropriate thing to do would be to go back to sleep, but even with Letrizia backing off, Hunger realizes that he couldn't possibly miss the opportunity to brag about his sword. +Cute for Hunger, but he's still far behind.
He called the Forebear's Blade to hand, the bright sharp shard of its silver blade now a full handspan longer than when he'd left. The sword was steadily replenishing itself, feeding ravenously from the energy of his triumph against Amarlt. By the evening he expected the entire weapon to be restored. That was truly a strange feeling. The last time it had been unbroken was when...

He closed his eye. No point in dwelling. "I slew a swordsman of considerable skill. I should have lost. He was better than me, but too straightforward."

"Aha! Your undead chimera powers are growing stronger. Now you've somehow gained the power of... having a full sword!"

"Terrifying, isn't it. A classic vampiric ability. Truthfully, this Blade is much diminished from what it once was. If it's replenished by this evening as I suspect, I'll be able to defend you much more effectively."
You can't walk up to the edge of backstory like that and just stop. Mean. Hunger is good at understatement, because there's no point in worrying the daughteru. It's true, and doesn't even sound like an understatement, but Zee knows that Hunger beats up people he shouldn't be able to, so the fact that he really should have died there stays concealed. And jokes happen! Joke's on you, Zee, we are now less undead and less chimera, having discovered the power of an almost-coherent build.
He remembered now, the heft, the mountainous solidity of the Blade in hand, the terrible crushing momentum of its stroke, the sharp bitter bite of its edge. The shadow of its passing was water made ice; pressed to the flesh, it was ice against marrow. The Forebear had been inevitability made manifest, an overlord so mighty he'd no need of cruelty.
Seems to be a response to the "Forebear was a jerk" going around, but he did give us +Heartlessness... Well, cruelty exists even without need. but at least he probably wasn't a monster. Just cold. It's interesting that the power of the Blade, of Ruin, gets ice imagery. Seems too orderly, but ice cuts better than fire. Oh, hey, my power just came back on after an outage, thanks 4bear.
He would need to restore his other arm. Two hands were needed to wield it properly.
Hint taken, bossman. As they say, two hands are better than heavy work. Ruinous Valor is a three-pick option, therefore we need to immediately find the strongest person in the area and charge directly at them. Wait, Not Dying faction, what are you doing with those pitchforks?

Tune in next time for Hunger's greatest powerup yet: armless no longer. It's a bit melancholic, though, because it illustrates the tragedy of progression. If he advances so far past the masses as to have two hands, will he even be able to relate? Will he still be human?
"More power, huh? I hope you're not angling for a raise."

"Afraid? Does House Artriez lack confidence in the strength of its coffers?"

"A-as if! The Empire's going to pay you, so n-no need to worry about that!"

"Fiscal troubles? I'm planning to work as a mercenary. Help me advertise and I'll give you a cut."

"Are you sure? The name of Artriez does not come cheaply."

"I'm more interested in the name of Letrizia, the Armament pilot. Surely that commands value in military circles."

"Oh! Well, in that case... wait, you can't sweet-talk me into a lower rate! I would require at least fifty percent, and that's with docking Miss Gisena's pay. But don't worry, I'll give your promotion my utmost effort. You can count on me!"

"Thirty percent, final offer."

"Deal. Hehe, I was only aiming for thirty in the first place!"

"I know." He nodded to Gisena, leaning jauntily against the side of her tent with three fingers raised.

"Miss Gisena! You sold me out?!"

"Sure did, Zea! Now what's this about docking my pay?"
However much she pays us, it should be twice as much. Well, she doesn't pay us anything, but that just means it should be easier on her. Maybe the real paycheck was the friends we made along the way.

Looks like the joking accidentally hit a sore spot, House Artriez probably is having financial difficulties. Since Zee's dad was sick, and the house was weakened to the point of almost losing everything, it makes sense. She's very confident that the Empire (the one that almost certainly was responsible for her exile) will pay for her return, so I guess they have a policy in place for similar situations.

I take back everything I said about pointy elbows, Hunger's first-name comment was smooooth. At first it's like a joking, cliche sweet-talk line (teaching moment!), but Zee had just identified with functioning under the Empire rather than her family a line ago, actually does fluff her ego despite the transparency, probes for more information on areas she's been defensive about... while exhausted, and not an iota of heaviness about any of it. I absolutely love this magnificent bastard.

I know we've tossed around the mercenary idea for the medium-term, and it makes perfect sense, but it seems Hunger has fairly firm plans there. Good for him.

Ha ha, Gisena is on our side! That's what happens when you respond to someone undergoing "professional development"/awesome powerups in aim of a raise by docking their pay, what an amateur move. Luckily Hunger is a good boy, so instead of scamming you he gives you what you want.

Unfortunately, Gisena is without mercy. Noogies happened immediately offscreen.
The winner was [X] Uttermost with [X] True Maiming. With his Ring's regeneration now active, Hunger can fight through the severe damage from maiming, though only in short bursts for the next three days. What now?
I... think I said that Uttermost had my uttermost contempt only mostly-jokingly yesterday, but I already love it. Hunger doing swordbeams constantly is my new brain screensaver. It's great that we're not screwed if a fight comes up, too. Even if there should be only peace, our votes will decide.

Fishing is a meme vote, meme votes have gotten us into trouble before. Fishing meme votes have brought great trouble before. It's not even mondo bait at this point, he just threw the Rod of Ages in the water. We could visit the encampment and not fish, but the difference between it being too dangerous and being useless is a few days for Hunger, who is now well on his way to having two hands and becoming incomprehensible to mortal minds. We could still see some of the people in previous options, like Gabri- like the Amia- like the Advent-... we could see the merchants again? Nah, fuck those guys.

Mystery box and naptime in one package, what's not to like? The mystery box, for me. It could be anything, even trauma. Unclench so all the memories come spilling out? Unlikely, but as amusing as it would be to go Even Further Beyond on chilling out, I don't wanna roll the dice right now.

I was a bit confused about why healing Verschlengorge would be physically straining, but oohhhh, the monsters. We should get around to doing that sometime, and now is a time. Eh, all non-fish votes are good, even if they feed our grinding addiction.

Last, but not least, road trip! Even better, we get to do chores for people. Wait, wasn't that a curse, you ask. It's only a curse if it doesn't give you rAnK. Grow Hunger's Astral legend by de-catting trees and helping old ladies across the street, before stabbing the lidless eye of Sauron or something. This option also heals Verschlengorge, because obviously fixing the car before the road trip makes sense, but I didn't realize that earlier. Brb, changing vote. Relationship boosting is cool, we need more trust to get all Zee's secrets, and all these people need happiness.

Vacation takes time, which is bad because Apocryphal's coming back online, but on the other hand we've got three (2.5?) debuffs holding us down that'll clear up by waiting. And I don't really like the idea of stalling for more Arete, that just slows stuff down, but since I'd actually like a vacation update or two it's not a problem for me.

To be honest, I kinda want to do inane sidequests at least once, to see what they're like.

I get the context clue that rings can get in hissy fits with eachother, but not a whole lot of specifics about what that might entail.
Rings might be associated with corresponding Ages, so if one Ring says it's the Age of War and another contradicts that it's the Age of Magic, they need to decide who is in the right.

Slack off... with uttermost vigor. But seriously we've gotta ditch some of these debuffs, maybe we can get rid of Chill by chilling or lose Paralysis? Also we lost some cha with Uttermost, gotta shore up weaknesses. The Quickening options are efficient since we don't have Rage anymore to multiply non-blood stats. Wonder if we can sac second stage too, as is it kind of sucks.

I'm surprised Dominion is so popular here. What if you guys end up wanting to go for Cut Through? There's value in getting the Blood Advancements and saving Arete. You get the power of Blood and keep your options open for any 7 Arete picks you might end up wanting! Philosopher's Wreath, another high-tier magic system, some utility effect that saves you a lot of quality of life, or a critical combat upgrade! The Apocryphal Curse lying dormant means an opportunity for you to accumulate Arete towards flexibility in planning! You could even save up for Once and Future, not just for the power but for that sweet Forebear lore!

Easy, I want the Ring. End of discussion for me :V

I think one major concern is there being another Ruling Ring somewhere in the Voyaging Realm

Current vote count?

I see that edit there, I thought it was odd that Hunger was at 50x speed and strength still, because that was so three days ago.

Edit?

No, you need it to become a super juggernaut undead etc.

I think one major concern is there being another Ruling Ring somewhere in the Voyaging Realm

Or even outside of it!

If we heal stay and heal Verschle, depending on how long it takes that could mean Gisena is able to scout out the encampment while we do so. Since she should have some free time after powering up and at that point is strong enough it's not particularly risky for her to solo it. Giving us better info on how risky the fishing competition might be in our state. We could potentially have our cake and eat it too!

Less excitingly there's probably some other minorly useful things over there she might acquire or get a lead on.
