So what's the plan for dealing with an Apocryphal proc with over 100% strength? Our last Apocryphal proc was only at 80% and it would of forced Hunger to use the shattering blow if Gisena hadn't gotten Renaissance Woman for free and we had gotten 4 EFBs before that.
Spend Gisena's Pillars time on making some relevant one-use item for Hunger.

Granted, I would rather just tank it, but that's the easiest way to mitigate the proc.

For the two weeks until we activate the time stop, I don't have any specific plan to offer beyond 'RW Gisena + 26 Arete worth of immediate power from Signs will not be accounted for by the boosted Apocryphal Curse.' Once we are safely in the Realm of Evening, we'll have our entire Arete production since Sep 21 to spend on Graces, companion powerups, long-lasting reagent buffs, etc. I'm optimistic about both of those routes.

I also want to say that there is more to handling Apocryphal procs than just comparing the percentage of Curse Mitigation for each event. Our plot decisions make a big difference as well. For example, when we decided to go to Nilfel the blurb explicitly noted that we were not required to rescue the Princess or defeat the Lord Protector. By siding with the Royalists, we chose the more difficult and physically dangerous path. Similarly, we went looking for a fight and had to walk into Augustine's chosen battlefield, which she had already prepared for us, specifically. (This was instead of pursuing a diplomatic approach.)

Similarly, the specific details of our Build can make a difference. We chose to put a down payment on Fisher King instead of improving our magic Protection with Iridescence, saying that "we have enough power right now." This was after choosing not to buy Indomitable Dominion as the second Empyrean Sign, which would have been a perfect counter to the Soul Severing attack that Augustine used against us.)

The punchline here is that the Apocryphal Curse will ensure that Hunger's journey is interesting, but the voters are the ones who ultimately decide how things play out. Don't get so hung up on the percentage of curse mitigation that you ignore the other levers we have access to.

@Zfglx I'd like to use my vote marker. If you don't veto, please vote for Strain, Regency, Consolidate Power, and Intensive Research.

I think we've fought a good fight for fluff, but I'm willing to cross the line for consolidation. Plus, I also like danger and craziness.

Hrm, this one's a bit rough, not sure if I'll come back to this particular one to finish since I feel stuck/like I could do better if I started a new one? But here's at least a first iteration of Adorie, since Priest and I need to figure out what the sisters look like before we start a particular upcoming request!

Maybe Chill is beyond reach but nation building and princess interactions are a grand consolation.

We did not spend 28 Arete on RW back when we had the chance which in hindsight was the MOST OPTIMAL DECISION (suck it GISENA EFB gang members, you were wrong)

On the other hand, we know that EFB can build on each other. So imagine what Gisena could have made if she had RW earlier?
RW is partially a potential based EFB after all and potential does love to build up upon itself.

With the loss of the 100% Arete bonus we actually have to put some thoughts into taking efficient picks rather than rely on brute forcing problems by EFBs. I suggest gunning for Ruling Ring ASAP and focusing on low hanging ultra efficient picks (reminder that Fierce Quickening and Vigor were single pick no Arete provided by +Progression) that the ++Progression RR would give us. If our first jaunt into Pillars would give us 1 pick/day we can still get a lot of the low hanging fruits and collect Arete for the combat EFBs (SJUC,RoB).

Still even with 1 pick a day we could get RR,Stranglethorn and Opal/Irid and focus on Stats (currently lacking for our Rank)

EDIT PS: We have reduced pick and Arete budget -> improve the efficiency of picks is a logical conclusion that hopefully people would not try to fight (but they will ofc)

There were no prey for Gisena's blast-fishing experiment in the river, but scarce hours later they encountered a picturesque lake, freshwater glittering in the sun and spanning very nearly to the horizon. Lilies bobbed across its expansive surface as birds and bugs circled lazily about, the halcyon chorus of life uninterrupted.

"Well, this is downright idyllic!" Gisena exclaimed, spinning around to face the water. She skipped happily down to the shore, humming as she went.

And we're going to ruin it by Fishing with explosives!
"It's downright suspicious." He followed, keeping his eyes peeled. They'd spoken of fishing, and a fishing spot appeared. It could be benign, the world yielding to his whims on this small matter - a faint echo of the causality-bending influence he'd once exerted by sheer power of spirit.

Long seconds passed. Nothing struck at them, from ambush or otherwise; he settled into a watchful wariness.

It's not paranoia when there's an Apocryphal curse out to get you!

Letrizia had Verschlengorge extend a hand over the water, acting as a makeshift pier. He carved a rudimentary fishing rod from a branch and some wire, while Gisena tinkered with one of the Armament's dumb-fire munitions, its fuses safely set aside.

For just a glorious second I thought it was VERSCHLENGORGE that was carving a fishing rod. Just try to picture it!

"You go first," he handed Letrizia the rod, and some processed meat for bait. "It's simple. Flick the rod to cast the line and wait."

"A-alright." Letrizia took the rod from him and cast the line with a determined expression. "How long does it usually take?"

"Depends," he shrugged. "Could be minutes, could be hours."

"That long?" She asked petulantly. "Couldn't you hunt the fish with your physical power? You slew an Astral beast the size of a giant!"

"I'd rather rest for a time," he replied, settling in. "That bandit leader was well-equipped and skilled. I exerted myself more than I'd like. The well of my power has thinned."

"Hmph," She tossed her hair primly. "So, we're to wait your pleasure while you rest? You could just as easily sleep while Verschlengorge is moving."

"Yes, you're to wait," he said dryly. "And fish."

"A-ah."

They sat in silence for a bit.

..Is her ignorance of fishing the fault of her noble title, or of the sci-fi setting, I wonder.

Also what a great idea! Sleeping while Verschle is moving! We should do that too!

Especially if we take the improved sleep option!

"W-well, that's just totally unreasonable!" She finally said, turning to glare at him.

"I never told you I was going to be reasonable."

"That's true... Wait, I-I mean, you shouldn't have to tell people that! Reasonableness is the expected order of things!"

"Do as you like. I'm resting here."

"Mmh..." Letrizia slouched unhappily.

He chewed on a stalk of grass. "Hey. What do you think our chances of getting out of here are? Eight out of ten? Nine?"

"At least nine, I'd hope! Both you and Miss Gisena are strong... maybe ninety-five out of a hundred times we should escape? As long as we don't have too many encounters like today."

"I tend to attract trouble. So does this guy." He gestured towards the Armament with his head.

"Hmph! True enough. Maybe if you were a bit more reasonable, that wouldn't be the case."

Well, if we were more reasonable we likely would have chosen Freedom instead of Revenge, and with that We wouldn't have had the Apocryphal curse, so I suppose she's technically right.

Also we're a tyrant and a cursebearer! Reason is for the weak! Our Drill Sword is the one that will pierce cut the heaven!

..wait, maybe that was Suizhen actually. :V

"Fire me if you like. I'll retire and become a fisherman."

She laughed. "I'd like to see that!"

That would be a bit hard with the fish rapidly dying from Decimator :V

Sorry, but retirement as a fisherman will have to wait until we'll have mitigated nearly all of the Decimator... so maybe in a few billions years if we're lucky.

I wonder, how many Cursebearers have managed to mitigate their curses COMPLETELY? @Rihaku, I don't suppose you could at least tell us if someone managed it, how rare it is, or how long it takes on average?

"Point is, we don't know exactly what the future will bring, or if we're all going to make it. It's worthwhile to look around and enjoy this place every once in a while. Steal what joy you can."

Letrizia looked down, her expression conflicted. "You're right. You're right, of course, but..."

He closed his eyes, letting his instincts guide him. "You feel like you don't have time for that. That people are depending on you. That if you don't achieve what you've set out to achieve, it will all have been for nothing."

She gasped. "H-how did you-"

"I felt the same, once." He paused, thinking carefully.

"There was a magic in my second world. Hard to quantify or explain. As you accumulated power you could do impossible feats. My enemy was very skilled in it. He'd spent centuries upon centuries gathering strength. Fighting him was like fighting the tide. Endless setbacks every week. Whenever we failed, people died. Whenever we didn't act, people died. I fought him for eleven years. If we hadn't taken what moments we could, however brief, we would have lasted... maybe five or six. That final stretch, it was only the strength that I'd gained in those moments which kept me going."

...You know, the hero certainly has changed a lot from his past self. I can't picture the man he's speaking of choosing the Decimator's affliction, maybe the worst curse for the effects it has on our surroundings.

Or maybe he took it because it pushes him to always improving, never stopping, otherwise people will suffer even more for as long as he lives. It can be some sort of grim motivation I suppose... though if he doesn't take the 2 years of curse sated this interpretations doesn't really hold up.

She blushed. "I-I get it. You d-didn't have to make a whole speech and everything."

"Stupid."

"What?"

"'You didn't have to make a whole speech and everything, stupid.' Say it properly. What is the nobility coming to these days?"

"You! Aaah... I was trying so hard not to be a stereotype! Is this how everyone sees me, even you and Miss Gisena? That stupid Old Terra show..."

"I don't remember much. Bits and pieces. But you have to admit... the Armament. And you kind of look like her."

"Yeah. Neuron Genesis Cathedrelion, right? It's been a joke for almost as long as we've had the Armaments. I even got implants to change my hair..."

"What?" He sat up. "So you're a natural redhead as well?"

Her hair shimmered for a moment, then shifted to a shade of fiery red. "Y-yeah. I thought white was more professional and would break the association, but everyone was like, 'That's exactly what she'd do!'"

1)I didn't recognize the quote. Is it actually that famous? I mean, It certainly sounds as something Asuka would say, but I can't remember this specific sentence

2) She's a natural redhead and they have the show! She's truly cursed with awesome!
"Don't fight it. Embrace it. Then people will naturally see the areas where you're different."

"Oh? L-like what?"

"You're childish at times, but on balance I'd say you're much more level-headed and mature than she was. She always acted like she had something to prove. You're truly comfortable piloting Verschlengorge. You and he have a good connection. Though not as good as mine with my sword."

"Well," She said quietly, failing to contain a smile. "I am five years older. Of course I'd be more mature!"

He nodded, leaning back down again.

mh.. How old was Asuka in the third movie? There was a timeskip there, and she certainly was more mature after the near-third impact (at least I think it was the third).

The eyepatch looked good on her.

"Hey," She spoke up again. "That magic from your old world. It sounds a bit like the power of the Armaments. Have you ever heard of the concept of Astral Rank?"

"We didn't formally name it or anything. If you lived and did great things, you grew powerful. As your power grew, the world started to yield to you. First in small ways, then increasingly so."

"It's actually a field of study that I dabble in. A hobby of mine!"

She shifted to face him directly, tracing figures in the air with her index finger. "The most commonly used analogy is this. So, you know how objects within the physical realm have a property called mass?"

"Sure."

"Mass distorts physical space. Some say the curvature of that distortion is called gravity."

"Okay."

"Similarly, some entities have a property we call 'Rank.' Rank distorts the Astral realm as mass does the physical, and the curvature of that distortion is called 'Pressure.' By exerting Pressure, an Armament can accomplish great feats. It's an amazing ability! Rank gives you the power to achieve the conventionally impossible, to overturn the system of the world, to blast with awe and with fear, greatness undiluted like a blazing star! It cares nothing for stipulations or prognostications. It is the sharp bright sword of will that cuts to the heart of the matter, bringing mere physical law to heel!"

"...I get it. You didn't have to make a whole speech and everything, stupid."

Before her shocked expression could subside, he gently raised a hand.

"Just kidding. It was a wonderful explanation. Did you write that? It sounds like more than just a hobby to you."

I swear it seems taken straight out of a manga! The explanation of his powers given by the hero.

..are we sure she didn't take it by the local Evangelion show? Maybe they didn't have AT fields...

Also Hunger's quip was PERFECT!

"Mm-hm!" She grunted, her face still red. She cleared her throat. "I'm hoping to present it at a Symposium one day. The Armaments have been with us for millennia, but we still don't understand all their secrets. Even most pilots only know the basics! You compress your Armament's Pressure into a Shroud and that makes you unstoppable within its radius. But recent studies have shown that even humans can develop a Rank! If we properly apply ourselves, we can go so much farther as a species, and even as individuals! It wouldn't much surprise me if your powers operated off a similar principle!"

"A shadow in the Spirit realm, huh... Let's test it. It sounds like your society has developed quantified measurements for this attribute."

"Yup. Rank is usually measured from 1 to 10 in a hyper-logarithmic scale, though values above that should be possible. An Ereadhihr - an Armament - at full theoretical strength is Rank 10. No amount of physical force can so much as impair their actions! We've made some Armor Prototypes that manage to reach the middle ranks, enough to outclass conventional weapons in dogfighting or ground combat scenarios, though no number of them could even compete with an Armament. Individual humans typically have a Rank between 1 and 3, with anything above 2 being exceptionally rare."

"That fits my observations of your Armament as well. Its full potential is well beyond even that of my enemy at his height. Ereadhihr. The language of the Foremost?"

A shroud.. or maybe a barrier? A field?

...an AT field? :V

there are certainly a few similarities.

Also I wonder, would the Accursed even get a number on the scale, or would it simply read infinity? I suppose the second one is the most likely, what with him being nearly all-powerfull (other than for his curses).

"That's right! You have good instincts for this sort of thing." She hummed happily. "Ereadhihr, the Elder Implement. They weren't just a weapon to the Foremost. The Foremost could harness them for countless tasks, bend realms both physical and Astral to their whims, apply the Interdict of Cognition that immunizes us from rampant intelligences, and so much more!"

He turned to glance at Verschlengorge. "Did they pull the ladder up behind them? Prevent anyone from making more?"

"Ah, no, we don't think they did anything like that. But... it's complicated. To create a true Armament, an entity with the potential to reach such elevated Rank, there's a special component involved. A sort of... Curse that's inextricable from its core essence. Verschlengorge has one as well, of course. It's called... the Affliction of the Decimator."

I wonder, where this some kind of prototype artificial cursebearers for this one specific curse?

Also they got vaccinated against accidental AI development

If I don't sound surprised about the decimator revelation, it's because I had skimmed the quest more or less up to this point in the past, so I already knew of the Armaments being created by the Accursed.

[ ] Spill - There's no way this is a coincidence. The only question is, is this the work of the Accursed, or of the Apocryphal Curse? Whatever the case, you need answers. Tell Letrizia a reasonable amount about your own circumstances, the power you command and the Curses you bear. [+Letrizia]

[ ] Keep Your Own Counsel
- See if you can get more information out of her without disclosing anything about your particular circumstances. It's good to trust; better to trust after you hold all the cards. You've barely known her half a week. You can always tell her more when she proves herself a reliable ally. [+0.5 Arete]

I'm pretty sure I remember Spill winning. The second one would be nice to pay for the Of Fishermen option below though
Though you intend to rest, fishing is serious business. How much should you exert yourself in catching the fish?

[ ] None - You'll conserve your energy. You are already wounded, no need to become winded as well.

[ ] Substantially - Show 'em how it's done. [+Letrizia, +Improved Nutrition, Tired Condition]

[ ] Of Fishermen, A King - The sharp bright sword of will that cuts to the heart of these waters and brings their mightiest bounty to heel! [+???, +Legendary Fish, +Gisena, -1 Arete or Exhausted condition]

ok, let's be real. It HAS to be of Fishermen, A King. With arete growth becoming faster until the next BIG vote (I'm pretty sure this doesn't count) going from the current near 6 arete to the 7 (and 1 of debt) for a 7 point option plus the fish is certainly possible.

Also it's a mistery box! It could be anything, maybe even a Giant Fish! :V

Update tonight. Precursor update, including blurbs for spells discovered, now out on the Patreon.

Gisena's True Nullity was of course the obvious means, but bereft of a specific target to nullify (the Realm itself? some specific command of unknown location or nature? an underlying phenomenon, possibly emergent, arising from interactions within the Realm?) progress was slow.

Letrizia entered his office, alongside Adorie who carried a large stack of tomes.

"Hello, Lord Hunger!" The pilot greeted cheerfully, her wounds magically healed in the wake of the battle's conclusion.

"That's King Hunger to you. You're in a good mood."

"Naturally," she said, sitting down in the plush chair facing his desk. "Verschlengorge is as close to fully-healed as he has been. I think he really likes the new weapons and armor we've installed. I've been thinking of asking Miss Gisena to take a look at him as well. According to her, the Foremost used magics similar to the Graces of her Maiden. Maybe she could even fix him with the Ring of Artifice!"

"Gisena's got a dozen projects commanding her research attentions," Hunger mused. "What's one more?"

"I know, right?! What can't she do?"

"Find a way to extract Aobaru and Aeira in a timely manner. Hence the purpose of your visit today, I assume." He addressed Adorie.

"That's right," The presumptive queen said, slamming the tomes on the desk with a satisfying thud. "I spent all morning looking through my library and finally found these! If your Cloak of Sky does wield sorceries incipient to the Realm of Myth, you should be able to find reference materials in here."

Finding reference materials in a massive stack of tomes? Sounds like Gisenas' fourteenth project to me!
