If Astral Rank in the Human Sphere works the same as in the Journeying realm then mass media is probably really weird.

If you get rank just by being known, does that mean porn stars, politicians, and celebrities are all beautiful geniuses? Would terrorists would gain superpowers after every successful operation? The media would have to be state-run, otherwise things would get kinda crazy.

We don't know how Artifice works but it presumably gives some sort of advantage against technology based opponents. Even if it doesn't Nullity can reduce rank and Gisena's stat build is pretty strong. If we manage to diplomacy the prototype she might even have armour of her own to wear for the fight.

there's some kind of barrier at r3 that most people can't break tho

You need appropriate Heroic Feats for it to count, and an average human even with heroic feats would only get defensive rank. No magic to catalyze it.

I think theres some level of technique involved in harnessing your reputation to turn it into rank. I don't think you passively gain it without trying just by being famous.

The Fate that Letrizia's dealing with might be throttling that kind of Rank gain. Because that's what I'd expect, but it clearly doesn't actually work that way.

I don't see why it would give that kind of advantage? It basically makes her a techonology specialist. But she's lacking the equipment she needs to get real use out of it.

Fame is helpful for amplifying the gain, but you still have to do actually impressive stuff to gain Rank. Or craft well? And there are probably some other factors involved, since we know that Hungegr's former world was more developed in that respect and people seem to have pretty limited Rank around here. Hmm, that knowledge might be one of our chips we could offer the Empire or Republic.

In terms of actual combat results, it would be something like:

Middle Ranks (3.1 to 8) - A 1 point difference in Rank is overwhelming, 2 points is nigh-unwinnable

Both the Hero and the Tyrant were around the high end of Middle Rank by the end of his journey.

With her massive +Men and supernatural knowledge, she'd be able to tear enemy robots to pieces. You know, if she actually had some magic to do that with. Being Gisena is suffering, for at least a bit longer.

The description of artifice is so vague it could be almost anything. All we know is it involves technology and requires time and resources. It could be Vancian magic but for technology just as easily as it could be building things.
 
If fame directly correlates to Rank gain, Armament pilots would have high Rank, insofar as they both accomplish great feats and are very well known. Letrizia did not have a high rank --> Human Sphere folks arent getting much in the way of it.
 
Yeah, Artifice is probably just something like the false hand of the maker we could have gotten.
 
By the way how does that rank gap work with HDS? Does it basically bring people down to our level? Because it can drag someone in high to mid with their new effective rank difference.
 
Also, since Thorn doesn't seem to gain any traction (alas poor Fairbright! it seems your memetic power is to be ignored), I'll switch to the Kaiju fight. For reasons I can't disclose, I really want as much Rank as possible in the near future.

It slices the effects in half, not the Rank. Since Rank gain is exponential, it won't bring enemies down from 10 to 7.7, they'd still be (very) high. Or so I think.
