A New Dawn (Ex-Papergeist) - A Worm/Naruto Crossover

But the seal before me, not even a hundredth of the way finished, was something that I felt was needed more than anything else, even it was ethically and morally abhorrent. It was incredibly complex, and would likely take me years at the current rate to work on, but it would be my final trump card if anything drastic were to happen.

Right now, it was all theory, and it may never be finished. But it wasn't going to stop me. I was invested in this path, both this seal, and being a hero
Is that a Jinchuuriki seal, that will be interesting if it happens

Amy Dallon. Panacea.

Fuck.
Oh dat not good

There was no mistaking the figure sitting at the desk, auburn hair, her eyes half-lidded with bags underneath. You would have to live underneath a rock to not recognize who it was.

Amy Dallon. Panacea.

Fuck.
So is going to be one of those fics then, huh.

Friend or foe, which will Amy be, I wonder?

Either way, good chapter,

I particularly like how, whilst giving us a deeper look into how Taylor operates, you left several points that can be used to further the plot (the merchant store house, Taylor unexplained goals, the Undersiders [nicely introduced by the way] and Coil by extension). It shows good forward planning.

There are a few grammar errors, but I'm sure someone else will point them out.

Regardless, I'm seriously looking forward to seeing how this story plays out.

Keep up the good work.

I think you focus to much on the Naruto way of being a Shinobi instead of how it probably actually was in the Naruto World. Konan was a S rank Shinobi before she died and your writing doesn't really show that. The thing with Tattletale shouldn't be possible because the awareness of a Shinobi especially a S rank Shinobi should be better than this and while Taylor isn't actually Konan she has her ability to manipulate paper. And you show us that she uses her power to create paper birds that should have seen Grue and Tatteltale and noticed their suspicions behavior.
Your story is actually quite good so please carry on with writing it and have a good day.
Ehhhhhh... Taylor has the raw skills and knowledge to make good use of Konan's skillset, but physical instincts and constant observation of the kind you describe here are the mostly likely part not to be carried over. You still have to get into good habits, and frankly I suspect Taylor is being somewhat complacent, because everyone in Brockton Bay looks like a bit of a schmuck compared to the S-Ranks of the Naruto setting.

Frame it more as little Taylor following in Big Sis Konan's steps with a step-by-step textbook on the how-tos of it.

Taylor's hilarious competent. By Earth Bet standards. Konan would call her cute, give her a head pat, and tell her to sit back and watch an expert do it for a little while.

Konan was a S rank Shinobi

True but Taylor isn't Konan, she is living with memories. Things that would come natural to her she has to learn. I imagine it will come eventually.

I agree, Taylor isn't quite there yet. She is also not impressed so far with the heros and a little arrogant. (although she has reasons to be sure)

Of course, no one in the world of Naruto had to deal with ridiculous Thinker abilities either. A bloodline like that would have any hidden village ready to go to war over it.

Why this reaction? Has Tenshi managed to offend New Wave somehow? Or is she worried that Amy could pick up on her being a parahuman?

Thank you for sharing your story with us.
Tenshi is pretending to be a 20+ or even 30 something years old to protect her identity. Due to Konan's memories and her own experiences, there is no way Taylor would trust someone she doesn't know to keep the fact that she is a parahuman a secret, and from that would come a lot of observation that would greatly hamper her future action. Not to mention, Panacea might be able to detect either something strange with all the paper making Taylor's body (outing her right this moment), or just detect chakra coils, which is a can of worms I'm not sure I even want to discuss.

I can't help but imagine that as a subtitled anime scene.
"Kami forbid"
(Translator's note: kami means god)
Yeah, this is one of those bad fanfiction tropes that I find really grating.

In addition to what @Hejtan said she explicitly stated that she wanted to avoid excess attention. Being seated next to a famous open cape is pretty much opposite of that.

Honestly I'm somewhat surprised with Taynon. Storage seals are a thing. Tenten was able to store a boatload of weapons and have them released one at a time or all at once from her storage scroll. Why can Taylor not make herself a portable lab with the equivalent of fold out security? Just make a master seal scroll and seal other sealing scrolls in it as needed.

Arrogance in her position is warranted and even to be applauded, as the effort she spends being paranoid at the expense of growth produces more loss than if she were to face repercussions at every turn.

She's capable enough currently that short an endbringer not much can threaten her meaningfully, and thus she can solve issues caused by her arrogance as less than an afterthought, when they occur.

Yeah, it would probably make more sense if Tattletale and Grue were surveilling her through cameras set up while she was away or a drone or something that Konan wouldn't have any experience with.

Is she made of paper now? I stopped paying attention to Naruto before Konan was more than a mysterious silhouette, but wiki says that her being made of paper is a technique she can activate, not a permanent state of being.

Actually, does Taylor not know that Amy's a striker? That without contact, she couldn't tell if anything's off?

Tats should be in the dark how bad it would be to storm Taylors base.

Also, on the seal, Taylor is working on. I'm thinking more along the lines of a personality-modifying seal given that jinchuuriki seals are not considered immoral to Konan, or anyone really from the Elemental Nations. Shit like that could take years to perfect and make near impossible to detect. Given Konan had zero fucks with Pein leveling Konaha that seal has to be seriously bad news.

Honestly, that last line from the Tattletale section makes me worried that she's gonna do something akin to what happened in Canon and drag Lung through there if/when he chases the Undersiders. Let's not and say we did, hmmm?

Tats is in the dark about WHY the base is dangerous and continues to be after Taylor leaves. The fact that she doesn't know details makes it more dangerous. She works from micro tells, so she is either picking up confidence (flesh) or nothing (paper).

The paper watchers were setup inside the open 1st floor warehouse to spot intruders coming in. She and Grue didn't come in.

When Tats gets nothing, isn't spouting out assumptions on methods or behaviours it freaks her out. Existential dread of suddenly not knowing.

I think the author is handling things on both Worm side and Narutoverse just fine. Wish folks would stop with jogging their arm over SOD. Anyone thinks they "know" how to do it better should go fire up their own thread and deal with their own plot snipers and peanut gallery...

Taylor is not a continuation of Konan. Taylor did not grow up in a paramilitary civilization where believing that you're being stalked by enemies 24/7 is considered appropriate situational awareness, rather than any level of paranoia at all. Taylor did not spend decades of her life pursuing the fantasy equivalent of sentient nukes, and training to have enough power to handle such a foe.
Taylor spent two years being psychologically tortured and then was handed a massive power array and a user's manual.
She's complacent, cocky, and brash.

Where is it said that she's an S-rank at the moment? If I put Taylor anywhere, she's low to mid chunin, which is pushing it. Realistically, the only reason she's even there is because of her versatility, than sheer power and skill. She only got Hookwolf simply because she was versatile enough to match him, was a poor matchup for him, had the advantage of initiative, and because there is barely any intel on what Taylor is capable of.

Frankly, Taylor has only been successful because she has been hitting 'soft' targets with no parahuman presence. She's not arrogant enough to believe that she can start hitting hard targets yet. However this slow and methodical approach has drawbacks in that it reduces her effective growth because she isn't challenging herself and it is likely to bite her in the ass sooner or later once she starts tangling with bigger players in BB.

It also sucks that she can't full time hero, and has to balance her time between irl stuff, and caping.

Nope!

Her reaction stems more from the fact that swhile she wants a better education, and she's aware that New Wave (and likely there are a few Wards) attend Arcadia, she would prefer that she wasn't in a position in which one of her core classes will be situated right beside a member of New Wave.

It's more of a reaction in the moment, because it complicates things for her by adding another layer of complications to her already rather large plans.

It's an unwelcome inconvenience. Yes, it is kinda silly considering public knowledge, but this isn't just Konan, but also Taylor, and Taylor is still a teenager.

Yeah, this is one of those bad fanfiction tropes that I find really grating.

I think you need to think just a tad bit deeper than just an annoying trope, and more like, a little bit of Konan accidently bleeding into Taylor. It was deliberate. But I can understand where you are coming from. It wasn't intended to be a trope, as much as just a small detail tossed in.

Tat's is relatively in the dark, so to speak. What she can divine is solely based upon her observations and what scuttlebutt has been bandied about on PHO. However, generally speaking it is a bad idea to invade a cape's lair and that is what she has been able to figure out. The other parts and her leeriness is because what she is seeing is incomplete data in that a lot of the defenses, outside of what Taylor has posted in paper animals, are unknown, and what possible information being fed to Tattletale is just bad news because she has figured that it is Taylor's lair, and without more information, all she has are guesses, and they are really poor guesses that only make it more worrisome.

As for the seal? Good guess, but still wrong.

She's …… cocky, and brash.

Two out of three. This man gets it. Success can breed its own failure.

2 things in different parts of canon, it's mentioned that Tenten has an exceptional natural talent for (storage) seals and heavily implied a few times, Tenten has LOTS of chakra.
It's left uncertain if she's a talent at seals, everything, or just storage seals, and the only blatantly clear statement about chakra level is from a filler and as such probably doesn't count AND of course the databook entries on her contradicts the hints given in manga/anime so it's about as clearcut as usual in the confused narutoverse.
Still, hints and suggestions are pretty strong.

Also, there's obviously some sort of limitations on "seal within a seal", or otherwise it would be in common use, but it isn't. Not to mention that sealing definitely has limits, the manga and anime just conveniently ignores them whenever plot needs it.

I'm tired of second-guessing myself because I want the perfect product. So I decided to hell with it, and I'm just gonna post what I have, and not give a damn about the blowback.

There is NEVER any "perfect" when it comes to writing. That's also why the vast majority of writers end up failing when they try to rewrite more or less of their stories(well done on getting past that BTW).
And very importantly, what you've posted is good, your quality of writing is already far more than good enough, so just keep on writing.

It's more the fact that japanese Kami are nothing at all like omnipotent Abrahamic God, and as such people would not use phrases like "Kami willing", "Kami forbid" and so on, and that's not even getting into the Naruto cosmology, it's basicly basicly infamous Brock's jelly filled donuts and similar crap but other way around. I'm not against use of Japanese terms, I'm against use of Japanese terms in wrong place and incorrectly.

Two out of three. This man gets it. Success can breed its own failure.

It's a heady cocktail for Taylor. She went from literally 'only refusing to die to spare her father that pain' to 'one of the strongest in the area' with no time in between. I'd be surprised if most people could manage to not become overconfident.
Heck, most capes, according to Worm'verse statistics, go out pretty quickly after getting their powers. Very little prep time, unless they're tinkers (and those only by necessity of their powers). It bears out that overconfidence and the teenage delusion of invincibility combine with the whole 'i have super powers' thing to be a driving force all their own.

I was going to go off about the tendency of inept fanfic authors to blindly search-and-replace "God" with "Kami" when writing Naruto dialogue and the many reasons why they shouldn't (hitting much the same points as @DeusFerreus does above, but probably a lot less concisely than they did), but it's true that Konan in particular -- very unusually for Naruto characters -- actually does refer to "Kami" with some frequency in this fashion. Except, the thing is, when Konan refers to "Kami", or "God" in the English translations, she's referring to Nagato, representing the religious-cult-member levels of faith and devotion she holds toward him and his apocalyptic purpose; when Konan talks about the will of Kami, she is actively and overtly reiterating her faith that Nagato is literally her God to emphasize the degree to which she herself is an unquestioningly loyal agent of that God.

That... feels like the sort of thing that wouldn't just casually bleed over into the mindset of Taylor Hebert.

@Iny

You're both right, now that I review what you're saying. I'll take the blame for trying to argue with you at midnight after work. I'll have it likely fixed up when I get around in the morning. It is contrived and really doesn't work in these circumstances.

@DW75

I completely forgot about the storage seals and why Taylor isn't using them as of yet. I'll discuss that in the morning as well.

I am confused. I think it is pretty obvious what seal Taylor is trying to recreate.

Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation

The Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation binds the soul of a deceased person to a living vessel, restoring them as they were when they were alive in order to do their summoner's bidding. It was originally created by Tobirama Senju, some time after which he declared it a kinjutsu. Orochimaru would discover the technique decades later and improve on its use while his subordinate Kabuto Yakushi nearly perfected the use of the kinjutsu.

Or some version of this.
