It's like an insurance for something terrible.
Except... this insurance can cover a whole lot of things. I don't know if our butterflies are enough to completely avert the War, and even past that, our tendency to explore (and encounter danger) is pretty high. We're currently styling Jacob as a kind of Renaissance Man Indiana Jones/Batman, which means we'll probably encounter our fair share of life-threatening occasions, especially once we graduate (and even before that). It's always good to have a contingency plan.

As mentioned above, we can also hand them off to someone else as a safety measure, you know? That future scene in our 7th year where we tearfully say goodbye to Megan, our love torn apart by the ongoing War, and we give her our gloves as a parting gift and a final wish, so that we can one day reunite a few years later when Harry's Protagonist Skill EX saves the day (lol).

[x] Flipendo (Deep Understanding) - Charm. With an advanced understanding of this spell, you are not only limited to knock over an opponent or object anymore, but to create a mighty force push instead. This is beyond what is usually expected out of the simple jinx.

[x] Shoes, I want Shoes – While you do not own a broom, it is a practical thing to conquer the sky's. Try to start the process of enchanting your shoes with the help of Nicolas. You will not be able to soar and fly through the sky, but to step on it as if on ground. This will open up many new possibilities for you. (Add new Alchemy Idea 'Talaria' to your Notebook.)

That update was wonderfully bittersweet

And we know French, that's good. Especially since next year is the tri-wizard, and Beauxbatons is going to be sitting in our table.

[X] Reparo (Deep Understanding) – Charm. The Mending Charm, also known as the Repairing Charm, is a charm that can be used to seamlessly repair a broken object and works on most materials. This useful charm was invented by Orabella Nuttley, in or before 1754. There aren't many things with too heavy a damage or that are simply too large for you to not be able to repair them as swift as a blink of the eye by now.

I'll be honest I voted and am still voting for the shoes mainly because of the style factor.

In my opinion, it just fits Jacob to stroll through Hogwarts lost in his own thoughts totally disregarding missing staircases to the horror of some onlookers.
Or take a leisure walk over the Black Lake where no one can bother him.

I'm suddenly not too sure on the alchemy pick if these are one-offs aslthough it still makes a great deal of sense to get the map, as we're likely to get other unlocks that are good in the future so I don't feel that we're going to be too limited in choice honestly. My favorite one is still the map though, maybe something else will come of it too given he's friends with Dumbledore.

[X] An old Idea of a Map – You had the idea of creating a Map of Hogwarts to track the hidden secrets you uncovered and reveal the people that move on its ground. With a mind as great as Nicolas, you can try to start this project earlier than you had planned out. (Lower the DC from 400 to 100.)

[X] Avifors (Deep Understanding) – Transfiguration. A transforming spell that could be used to change the target into a bird, flock of birds or occasionally a flock of bats with a vivid flash of blue light. Transforms the targeted object into a bird, which can then be used to carry a small object or message to someone. With the deep understand you have gained, it is possible for you to guide the birds with new orders, even after having cast the spell.

I've been convinced on the Avifors though, as I was originally just gonna go for Reparo. The unique capability that understanding this spell gives us is pretty great, as it's overall fantastic even for duels of our levels as you can do more complex maneuvers with the creations so instead of just attacking in a simple manner they can attack from behind/sides/above or just distract the person with noise ect, they can intercept spells in canon too which is invaluable particularly when spells start getting more dangerous, and there is interesting capability in their non violent uses. In the description you get given they can deliver items or messages which can be valuable on it's own, but there are perhaps other specialties say if you create crows or ravens which are highly intelligent creatures (even before any potential magical intelligence buffs ala Owls (which are quite dumb in nature) or Kneazles for example) that may be able to perform independent tasks or find things for us. The number of creatures it could create has a great deal of potential given the wide variety of animals with different capabilities within the avian family, particularly if you can branch further out like how it describes bats being possible, and we know magic can effect things differently for example humans/house elves and how Owls can find things.

I've gone with the shoes, I'm hoping that making them uses normal actions rather than personal. It's still not going to happen by the end of third year but maybe in year four we can knock it out. Especially as we'll be much higher in the skills by then.

On the other hand, I'm not sure that there have ever been shoes that can walk on air in Harry Potter.
Mostly because spells to float with and brooms to fly with are the typical transport options of choice. Seriously, this is like choosing a jetpack over a first-aid kit or something. Yes, it's way cooler, and yes, it gives us a broader range of combat—but it doesn't matter how many different ways you can attack when duels are decided by a single spell, and Jacob gets clipped.

We can dodge upwards? Why do that when you can just jump to the side or bring up a wall? What about when we fight indoors, in a cramped area? The option for 3D combat is not going to always be useful or applicable, and exploration is easily taken care of with a Wingardium Leviosa or any old broom. Hell, just wait until we learn how to Apparate.
However, a nigh-perfect defense that blocks any 1 lethal/dangerous attack will never be useless.
Remember the Weasley twins' shield charm hat/cloak/whatevers? Those should be what those gloves are.
Shield Hats only defended against minor charms and jinxes. The Gloves are an item partially designed with the help of Flamel. Nicolas Flamel. The guy who made the Philosopher's Stone. One of the oldest wizards in the history of magic. Our friendly neighbor, who regrettably is not long for this world.

We have been told, WoG, that we will never get the chance to learn to make an item like this again.
Why are we going for the flying (not really) boots instead of the item that will literally save lives!?
I'm genuinely confused.

I doubt that it would block "any 1 lethal/dangerous attack" because canonically the killing curse is considered unblockable by magic.

Well no, but the description says the gloves defend against things like poison. This implies, though it might may not cover everything, it does cover things we typically would not be prepared to counter.

Which is what we'll be using Avifors for, but honestly if we're getting Killing Curses thrown at us we're already in deep enough shit that a pair of air boots will do far less to help than a counterspell charm.

How about we look at this from a more meta perspective? Narrative-wise, it would take off quite a bit of the pressure when up against actual threats, but Jacob probably shouldn't die unless we screw up something major regardless.

The curse of having old parents/family when you are young. You have to watch them go away. At least Jacob has Hogwarts to take his mind off things. Sad what happened to the Flamels though.

I like all the choices tbh. Gloves or shoes, whatever wins, I'll be fine with it.

[X] Gloves, I want Gloves – You have many plans of doing things that may be dangerous, and while you are no one to recoil from simple risks like that, it may be wise to get one measure security before that happens. While it may be too much to aim for eternal defenses, it should be possible to create something that can guard you once from a spell, a venom or a similar direct attack that would otherwise kill or maim you. (Add new Alchemy Idea 'Járnglófar' to your Notebook.)

Why does so few pick the map though?

Seems like a good option for both exploration, social, and intrigue.

The main reason is the fact that the other options are one time deals.

I'd definitely go for the map otherwise. It's tricky but we might be able to do the map in this year, depends on how quickly we can learn all the required materials.

It's four personal actions on alchemy and 8 standard actions to make the map so I don't want to put the work in on this until we've done the other stuff first which is all end of year required spells and potions and then raising all class related skills to O level for the year..

More protection is always good, and It matches the inspiration we got from Isaac.

I'm glad we got to spend time with our family.

Ps :
If ever needed, I can help with the french.

I don't like the one time deal arguments, as inevitably they'll be other one time deal arguments that come up later and we've been consistently getting more potions/spells/alchemy throughout the story so its not like we're ever going to suffer a lack of options.

Taking the map just makes everything easier, and given how many actions we spend on things the map would help with, theres loads of action synergy and positive effectiveness so the earlier we get it the better.

having a simply jinx be more powerful than expected sounds amusing to me :)

a rechargeable automatic counterspell would be an absolute godsend.
@Tabula Rasa Would the gloves be one use only, or would we be able to 'recharge' them in some way? Presumably via AP and/or money and/or rare reagents?
