[X] Red Wideye Potion I

After more thought I realized that although blue potion were more helpful to Wizards it's the red potion which is useful for all classes. Inb4 we distribute the red pill during Voldemort's second reign of terror to warn unsuspecting Muggles.

Like the idea of an emergency potion that isn't an incredibly expensive and/or dangerous addiction we have to upkeep, because the extra action will dictate the thread chug it every month. Hunting giant spiders in the forbidden forest is pretty eh as a plan.

We'd basically be forced to spend action(s) each month on Hogsmeade to maybe get the 15 galleons* needed to earn another personal action. Long term thinking it might improve and become more economical, but the startup costs are rough.

Now if we were planning on selling the Blue potion to the upperclassmen, so stressed studying for their OWL/NEWTs, at an extreme premium I'd probably be swayed, but I don't trust us not to sip from our own supply haha.

*Pint is 100 galleons and the vial we got was estimated at a tenth the value +5 base ingredient .

More actions => More chances to fail badly and get a debuff. If we had a lot of bonuses this is good.
Bonus to everything => More chances to succeed or crit, shaving time needed off. Remember all those progress rolls for Charms/DADA/Trans? A +5 would save us actions to progress.

We need money for the bigger more dangerous study of magic. So we will need people to help hunt giant spiders in the forest and people desperate enough not to tell anyone about a secret passage into the forbidden Forrest. The twins do want to get enough money to make thier joke shop happen.
First of all, where is this need for money coming from? Looking at the CS we have at least 16 Galleons and the priciest thing we can buy right now is a potion where the Ingredients cost 5 Galleons, which we can't even make because our potion level is too low. There is no dangerous magic that we can study right now that will break our bank. So we really aren't hurting for money, especially since we now charge 15% on our Hogsmeade trips instead of 10% like before. We are actually doing pretty well. And I doubt that we will come across some project that costs 100 Galleons to fund anytime soon. Basically, lets not make a problem when there really isn't one as we aren't hurting for cash.

Secondly, while Fred and George want money, they aren't suicidal. Yes, they want money, but they make it by gambling, probably getting things for people like we have been getting things for the younger years from Hogsmeade, and from inventing Joke Shop items that they sell to their fellow housemates. They don't make it by hunting dangerous magical beasts in the Forbidden Forest, killing them, and harvesting their organs and bodily fluids to sell. That was never once something that was hinted at as being in their character. There are lines that are too far for some people, and I think the Twins likely stops before it comes to skinning animals in a forest students are forbidden from entering.

Think of it like this. In a mundane setting, one day a loner kid comes up to some twins from a poor family, whom he has never talked to a day in his life. He then asks them if they would like to go into a forbidden forest with him to skin some animals in order to make money. It sounds crazy because it is crazy. Even in the magical world that is a bit out of there. We don't know the Twins, we don't trust them, and vice versa. And honestly, I hope we don't get to know them anytime soon. I like that our character is a little anit-social. I like the slow burgeoning friendship he seems to be building with Megan Jones and the possible friendship/rivalry there may be with Tracey. I don't want to start piling in more of the canon cast like the Weasleys, Harry, and Hermione and collecting them like Pokemon cards.

Basically, right now our finances our solid. If there ever comes a time where we are hurting for money then we will cross that bridge when we get there. But it isn't that time yet.

Anyways, on to another topic I was thinking about. I just remembered that this is 3rd year and that there are Dementors hanging around the school. As such, it might be wise to learn the Patronus Charm sometime this year. Obviously not right away as we also have a number of other things our our plate (school spells to learn, probably need to level up DADA and Charms one more time, etc.). But I was thinking we should consider learning the Patronus sometime after Christmas. January or February seems to be good time to maybe start attempting to learn the spell as it gives us enough time to whittle down the list of Spells and Potions that are needed for exams at the end of the year. What do you think?

I find it interesting everyone is not only ignoring the possibility of improving the Red potion but also the fact it has a lower DC compared to the Blue.

Both potions have the potential to be improved, it says as much identically in their text, so it's not really a big talking point.

The lower DC to actually get it running, and likely lower to improve upon it later, was a big draw for me though.

You are thinking too short term about needing money. As we advance things cost more right now we are doing low level magic which does not cost much. Long term we can expect prices to rise. It is the way of things. I rather get a higher revenue stream now than later.

Patronus only works if we have a teacher which we don't since Jacob is bad with people right now. Jacob should focus on the spells and skills he has for now and if he gets the chance for the patronus take it. But right now Jacob has no real reason to learn patronus or know what patronus is.

[ ] Quidditch Round 1, Ravenclaw vs Gryffindor – It's time for the first game of the year and while you have a lot of things that you'd like to focus on, most of the school will be present here. Go and watch the Quidditch Game. It could be interesting and if it is not, well you will be high enough up to watch the clouds instead. Win-Win.

this may be a bit late to ask, but does this option mean that canon isn't happening or is it because Jacob isn't aware of what's happening around him?

Ok seriously we don't need revenue for anything anytime soon. Especially with 15% actions. Anyone that argues 'long term' has some kind of money inefficient plan.

Also Blue Potion is not worth it. It's trading one action for another.

We may want to try getting as many classes as we can to P- so we can get month 5 free Point into P.

[x] Red Wideye Potion I
I like the blue one more because its almost certainly better for long term benefits and +5 seems pretty minor currently, but someone brought up a good point that we'd have to spend actions to get the acromantula venom/money needed each month. While we could potentially solve everything with just more money, we're poor as fuck and our current means of making money isn't likely to last. This potion is also more useful for clutch situations, so it might be valuable for upper year students, aurors, etc. A ban on doping substances subplot due to our potion would be nice, like the ban on the liquid luck potion.

@Tabula Rasa
Is there any sort of like, research grant or something we could get for publishing the new potion?

I'm not sure why you think the bonus woukdnapply, as the potion affects daily rolls and the classes are monthly rolls.

Maybe since there's nothing stopping Jacob from selective choosing to take the potion just before class, or before doing specific activities. He does this every couple of days for a month, and that allows the bonuses to apply.

And the acromantula venom for all these potions are coming from ... where? When one of the concerns with red potion voters that for blue to work you'd have to use it once a month and that would be too dangerous to acquire the ingredients.

You're positing using multiple times that amount a month for it to take effect, and that's still not certain it'd work that way, which would be even riskier.

Okay, you're right about supply of Venom, but if we look back at the description:

[ ] Red Wideye Potion I – Learning the Awakening Potion gave you an idea; it is clear that some of the ingredients act as a suppressant for tiredness and sleepiness. If you tweak the recipe and try to understand how the ingredients interact with each other… you may be able to make the potion more useful. Gives +5 to all spellcasting and physical rolls for one hour. Can be taken once in 24 hours without repercussions, if taken more often it may take its due toll. (Requires Awakening Potion learned & Potion skill of at least P-), Cost for ingredients: 5 Galleons, DC: 100 & 1 Vial of Acromantula Venom

you'll see that it works for an hour after consumption. At which point we get a bonus with a time limit, and we cannot stack this bonus by taking multiple potions. I mean we could be that's pushing our luck and stupid.

However, we know that the potion itself can be improved either through something like a tech chain or improvement of features. So something like

Red Wideye Potion I —> Red Wideye Potion II —> Red Wideye Potion III —> Final Red Wideye Potion

Or

Red Wideye Potion II
-[] Make it more potent ( bonus to rolls increase from +5 to +x)
-[] Make it safer ( May now drink up to 3 times within 24 hours)
-[] Make it Last Longer ( Effects last for 5 hours)

So we could hypothetically take it multiple times in a month as long as well follow >24hr. gap between usages.
