Yeah, Jacob is going to figure out that Peter is an Animagus pretty quickly. He has the Map after all. All he has to do is use the map to find where Peter is, see that there isn't actually a person there, and then he will pretty quickly conclude Animagus. It isn't much of a leap at all, especially when he just found out Black is one. Researching Animagi makes it that much more likely for him to make the connection. As a bonus it might hopefully put the idea in his head to make an attempt to become one himself.
Even if Lupin is uncooperative, his responses to some questions could help shed light on the context of the possible past relationship between Black, Pettigrew, and himself.
And I do sort of agree with this, though I will say that I think a meeting with Lupin is less of a potential waste of time than researching Werewolves. And while Lupin might not be forthcoming with any questions that Jacob may have, I think what he doesn't say will provide Jacob with some clues as well. If Lupin avoids certain topics, or is evasive about certain things, those kind of reactions themselves can help him put the pieces together.I'll be honest, I think that talking to Lupin is probably going to be just a little more than a waste of time.
We haven't particularly bonded with him and he probably underestimates Jacob's abilities.
And, considering the personality of our character, it is probable that a visit to Lupin will be either limited to discovering if his friends were Animagi and, if we succeed, maybe even what animal Peter trasformed into (but if we fail we get absolutely nothing), or maybe something we will do when things are basically over to show him specifically that we were actually capable.
