However, much like Perenelle, Jacob has the opportunity to learn the Dark Arts. Regardless of what happens to the creature, the moment Jacob puts a point in that skill, it's all over. He's a criminal practicing forbidden magic.
You know, didn't they learn about the Dark Arts in year 4 in DADA, they learned about the 3 unforgivables and imperio was used on them, its kinda hard to justify that being DADA

Just want to say you did an amazing job with this update @Tabula Rasa especially since it has lead to such an interesting discussion.

Alright, so when it comes down to it we are gonna need a guide if we choose to explore this place again. Something I see as being very likely to happen considering how it relates to the founders and is just super interesting. While the Imp can not enter Hogwarts, nothing says it cant guide us through the dugeon, something we will absolutely need if the challenges from before are anything to go by.

Should we decide to make a Pact I think that Jacob will go about making a very ironclad set of terms and conditions, ones that should prevent the worst from coming to pass. Killing it may be tempting now, but that is shortsighted in regards to figuring out what exactly is going on here. Once a pact has been made, and it becomes saner we can ask it a few more questions regarding this location, as well as what dangers we may face in the future. That way we know what to prepare for and start getting mastery over some more spells, just in case. (Deep Understanding Protego, Patronus, etc...) Perhaps even some alchemy items as well might help, such as seeing any hidden dangers and a bonus to combating creatures. (Ghostly Goggles)

As for the Dark Arts I like to think that they have a fraying effect on one's sanity and that we should touch the skill sparingly. However, if we want to explore this place further and make the most of it a higher skill in the subject couldn't hurt. Overall my point is this, we need to make a pact with the creature since its knowledge and assistance since its help will give us a better chance of making it farther into the dungeon and learning just what exactly this place is.

[X] A Pact, I agree – Agree to form a Pact. But you want more than just this book. The creature will be freed by your hand. In return it will swear to not harm you and share with you all the knowledge you need to further explore the deeper levels once you return.

[X] A Soul for a Soul – Take the book with you, but do not form any kind of Pact with the creature. You can't let it roam free, so you will kill it on the spot. End its miserable life. You will not be able to carry the dead back on your way to the Castle. But you will at least have avenged their deaths.

The potential of the Imp having a subtle loophole or having a countermeasure to the 'Pact' that will most likely get us killed is too big of a risk when we are just a beginner, while injured and tired, and doesn't even hold a candle to the founders. Plus as I have been informed by Nando, Unbreakable Vows exist which is basically a more reliable 'Pact' and can probably be taught by someone who doesn't want to kill us.

Best to either leave it there and give the book to a Professor or deliver it to Flamel.

I don't want to take any risks here and I don't want to trust a creature that spent who knows how much time alone in a dark room to let its madness fester.

Jacob is currently dead on his feet. The last thing on his mind will be to carry two skeletons all the way back to the castle.

On the topic of carrying the bodies back... well I don't know that seems like an awful amount of work and it's totally not like there's a spell tailor made for carrying heavy objects for a person.

I mean geeze really that sucks that no such spell exists. It sure is a shame that there's no first year spell calledWingardium Leviosa that can fit the bill.:V

joking aside he probably is too tired to remember said spell and to use it. Probably just wants it done and over with really.

I would prefer for Jacob to avoid jumping straight into making John Constantine's mistakes, which is why I voted for "A Soul for a Soul."

Not really, and that 'teacher' was a Death Eater pretending to be Mad eye, on top of that he never actually taught them the dark arts, he did subject them to the Imperious curse and show the killing curse.

Nope, nope, nope. It turned a normal book into a dark magic book, it actively undermines magic, it has killed students before. Kill it and be done with it.

Ok I see killing it as never being able to explore the dungeon until Jacob is much older and it will be more dangerous. If we form a pact it will tell us what dangers we will meet in the future allowing us to prepare.

On a slightly different note, after this adventure I kinda want to tell Dumbledore about this whole business (or show it in the pensieve).

Earn some browny points, maybe talk about Nicolas Flamel, but more importantly to seal/protect the path to Hogwarts. Who knows what temple of doom we just opened.

I see forming a Pact with a Fae or Demon to be inherently dangerous long term as even if we have the upper hand short term it will adapt and work its way around the conditions imposed on it to cause problems.

I see it as a natural part of being a wizard. There is a lot in cannon alluded to about pacts that is never fully explored that I think Tabula can do justice too. As for the dungeon I believe having a guide would serve us well. These is a place that the founders wanted to find and may lead to secrets and knowledge that can greatly help us.
