Being serious, guys, we can at max help with Ice magic in an indirect way, or call to help. Anything else has too big a chance to fuck it or backfire...

[X] Get to nearest servant and tell them to go get reinforcements while you keep an eye on the fight
-[X] Then aid Leona with ice magic.

So glad we didn't take the shiny bait...

So unless we have a genius form of combat that we're sure we can win, probably best not to bet our soul.
What is there to be glad for? Dueling him is one of the few ways he could be fought, because he is more powerful than Leona - he explicitly matches his power to hers, and warns her it won't last unless someone picks up the challenge. Implying that if he doesn't get what he wants, he'll up his game and kills somebody.

I don't have particular faith in that adding our pitiful combat experience on top of what our mother can dish out would fend off the Duke of Hell. Unless a factor hidden even from us is in play.

The other way he can be fought is with some overwhelming advantage, like an army behind our back, or another of the Holy Relics, except I doubt Cervitou is going to steal anything for the second time.

Okay, yeah, you make a good point.

The only thing I'm worried about is that the Duke will have a chance to curse us before he dies.

I think we should take the challenge, if he agrees to scale down to our level.

Plus, a Duke of Hell servant could be useful.

A duel is a prearranged combat between two persons, fought with deadly weapons according to an accepted code of procedure, He didn't state that he will hold back, so he won't taint his honor if he wipes the floor with us because we did know the danger and we accepted it. And I don't think he is holding back.

He didn't state that he will hold back
...
"Trying to fight me is futile and will lead to a tragedy unless we fight on even grounds. And unless you fight me by accepting my challenge, I don't intend to make it fair."
We are reading the same update, yes?

And I don't think he is holding back.
He came in here alone to pass time and challenged us for the evulz. He warned us that either we do it his way, or he kills someone. What do you think is happening?

Well I think we ought to be pretty glad our soul isn't on the line. Dying is one thing but being enslaved to a demonic entity is much worse.

Not sure how helpful animals would be since they're just as likely to get in our mother's way as the Duke's. Even ice magic is more of the same but we'd have slightly more control.

Actuall, I don't think he means his power. He means he has an unfair advantage, not a power boost waiting to happen. Making it a duel will give it rules (choosen by us), and thus can nullify his advantages. So... Yeah, his wording is not like he is holding back, but that he has something in reserve.

Hum-hum.

  • [X] Get to nearest servant and tell them to go get reinforcements while you keep an eye on the fight
-[X] Then aid Leona with ice magic.
[X] Use Spirit Magic to look at the mana currents, and/or the Duke of Hell's aura, to check if there's anything we can do there.
[X] After that, call nearby animals in the forests to our aid, if we can.
[X] After that, go to a nearby servant, and tell them to call for aid.
[X] Finally, aid Leona with Ice Magic, focusing mainly on debuffing the Duke of Hell.

Chapter 3: Days of Glory - Part 8: Lost Hope...?
"Why not lay down your sword?" Galiel asks.

Leona answers with a mighty motion. Galiel stops Excalibur in place by blocking it with his own sword.

"You still hope to defeat me? How uplifting," Galiel mocks. "Hope, however, is a scarce resource. And it is overrated."

Galiel collects force in his hands. He breaks the sword-lock with a fluid motion of his arms, that led to him knocking Leona back several steps. She is off-balance, and even though Galiel has a perfect chance to stab her in the chest and end her life, he doesn't.

"I am his majesty's greatest warrior. If you maintain your disposition of trying to fight me, you will fall from hope and into despair. Accept my challenge instead."

Leona, once again, runs at the knight. She swings her sword from the left to the right. Galiel easily jumps over the attack, then over Leona's head. With her back turned to him, he swings his sword just in time for her to catch it with her own. The two exchange five, maybe six more blows before Galiel breaks Leona's guard once again, and delivers a powerful kick into her upper torso, just below the neck. The kick has such inhuman strength that it throws your mother across the hall and into a pillar upholding the balcony that the stairs led to. The impact makes the pillar crack, but the most damage is done to Leona's back.

While your mother is now injured and recovering, Galiel isn't even phased. Before Leona even hit the pillar, he collected the force in his legs and leaped after her. He waves his sword in a wide arc, cutting the pillar in half while Leona ducks. She then proceeds to deliver a sweeping kick to his legs, knocking Galiel to the ground. She brings Excalibur with the tip aimed downward, aiming for his head, but Galiel rolls away from her. She attempts to stab him, but he keeps rolling away until he turns into an inky cloud of smoke and flies up into the air, in the middle of the room.

Galiel gestures with his arm, closing his palm while pointing it at the cracked and cut pillar. This caused it to split into two pieces, that Galiel hurled telekinetically at Leona. Leona jumps on top of the first pillar and uses it to jump even higher, above the other one. The rubble hits the wall and makes a hole in it.

As the two of them fight, you've gone away and told the servants to inform someone. To get reinforcements. Anyone they can.

Now, you enter back into the foyer, only to witness the resulting destruction. Pieces of rubble and cracked marble floor tiles everywhere. White dust was thick in the air. The same kind of dust that you see during the construction of a new building.

You focus your mind and materialize ice. The solid water sublimates into several, blue crystals floating around you. You mentally aim them at Galiel, then fire.

Galiel exchanges several swings with your mother. The crystals of ice hit him, but they shatter as soon as they impact his armor, not even doing the slightest bludgeoning damage to him. Galiel nonetheless lets out a groan of annoyance. He jumps high, onto the balcony of the foyer.

Galiel sits down at the railing in a casual manner. "If you won't accept my challenge, then, well. There's other ways to entertain myself... Bibbidi-bobbiddi..." he snaps his fingers.

With the gesture, a heavy odor of burnt coal and sulfur fill the room. Before you realize it, a pair of imps are trying to chew on your legs, but their teeth merely slide off of the dragonbone armor which is too durable for their fangs to penetrate. You slay the creatures with a swing of your sword, then you turn.

To your eyes, reveals itself a room full of demonic creatures. Your mother is fighting a crowd of twenty-eight knights of hell, holding them back and slowly destroying them with fair ease. In your direction, however, is running a flock of imps, and a pair of knights of hell. Galiel is underestimating your potential.

[x] Fight and await reinforcments.

There isn't any threat or offer that'll convince me offering him our soul is a good idea. Because let's be honest, that's exactly what accepting this duel with a guy beating our mother is.

Oh snap. The guy has a sense of humor. That complicates things significantly!

You didn't miss the bit of exposition talking about the meaning of keeping one's word in a demon society? You could probably set rules an limitations for that challenge, and he will abide by them.

I mean, the act of gambling a soul is stupid, yes, but probably not meaningless.

QM Advice:

You guys aren't seeing the full image.

Normally, a challenge means an actual duel with weapons. But this guy is bored, so he might as well accept any challenge you throw at him. You could make a talent show with three, neutral judges. Or a dance-off. Or play chess, except each piece is magical and has their own willpower (like in No Game No Life,) or even a Fantasy Rap-Battle.

I mused about a riddle contest for a bit, but then thought better of it when it comes to several throusands years old Duke.

A dance-off, huh? Could we teleport to borrow Tavish to partner with us real quick so we could reenact the Beelzeboss clip by Tenacious D?

I figured there's options but we don't have any special talents I'm aware of nor do we know he isn't a better singer than us etc. We could pick a game of chance but even with even odds I don't consider enslaving him as a prize equal to the risk of the same being done to us...

Suppose we could go for it anyway but it doesnt seem a wise decision.

Man, if that wasn't a particularly nice display of our future prowess... You know, things aren't that badly, actually, they look better than before. So why change ships? :B

By the way @Grigori, double post?

Am I just being a killjoy, rejecting the challenge? @Birdsie seems pretty eager for us to give it a go and losing here would probably mean death of Artoria and the quest. Whereas enslavement probably only lasts so long as Galiel lives.

Being overly cautious does make for a less engaging story.

You... May be right. But isn't it too soon for us to become demonic slaves? I mean, we haven't even grown yet... *Looking at own chest*
