Bleach: Derailed

The idiot wants to mess around once we want to let him show off. There is a time and place to show off. That he doesn't accept it, is what keeps him stifled. If Ichigo can swallow his pride for his end goals, then Zangetsu can too.
Except you're not letting him show off at all and that is what is pissing him off. You seem to be calling for moderation, but then enforcing extreme control, which is only going to alienate Zangetsu and make things WORSE. Like over controlling parent with a rebellious teenager, trying to force your rules on them rather than talking with them and trying to understand them is only going to make them act out even more.

Hence, Tinygetsu, and most likely tons of other petty ways Zangetsu will fuck with us.

Ichigo isn't swallowing his pride, though. As @Probellum said: Zangetsu's pride isn't Ichigo's pride.

This is happening because Ichigo wouldn't set aside his pride, and now that pride is clashing with Zangetsu's. Zangetsu wants to be released, and Ichigo doesn't want him to be, so he sealed him and then tried to go even further by shrinking him; there's no compromise being made here on Ichigo's end. He's just imposing his will on Zangetsu and stubbornly refusing to give any ground.

Everyone wants better control, but that control really isn't worth alienating what should be our closest ally. Especially when he can make things really fucking difficult for us. Like by making us look bad in front of the people we're trying to impress. Whatever control we might have had doesn't make up for the damage Zangetsu's spite could do to our rep.

On the bright side, though, Tinygetsu will be hilariously dangerous. Like, none of his mass goes away. It's just smaller. Anybody tries to block that and he's going to hit them like a wrecking ball that is also a ludicrously sharp knife, which is exactly what he will be.

And it gives us an excuse to learn the spinning-cloth trick, too.
That would make that legitimately useful, true. Might even be able to use that like a hookshot.

...we have swallowed our pride. We swallowed it and left Rukia behind instead of getting in a fight. We are swallowing it by accepting that there are expectations placed on us to be controlled with the size of our sword. Zangetsu needs to stop being a BRAT and learn that sometimes, you need to KNEEL for your goals to be accomplished.

I mean, we don't have any reasons beyond personal preference to want him small. If we walked around with him in full shikai, we could get away with that without damaging our reputation; permanent shikai are an acknowledged thing in Bleach, it came up when he first got his in canon, before they fought Jidanbo.

Only acknowledged due to a misunderstanding. And if we can one day put him back, than they will consider us a liar.

Bluntly speaking, you are letting what Yachiru said blind you that there are consequences to just letting Zangetsu fully hang out freely.

Also, no, not JUST personal preference considering that a FREAKING CAPTAIN told us to make him smaller.

I mean, no, people with a natural state of shikai learning how to compress their energy back into a sealed sword doesn't make them a liar, it makes them somebody who can keep their shikai as their base state, Yachiru didn't influence my argument because I always wanted to go around like in canon, and while my memory isn't that great I'm going to have to ask for quotations on a captain ordering us to make Zangetsu even smaller than he already is.

And while you're at it, elucidate the consequences of having the default state of our sword be a shikai, a state most shinigami never even reach, much less become capable of maintaining on a permanent basis. Because I'm not coming up with any negatives.

"Matches are until one fighter cannot continue, or ring out." A captain says from the VIP box. At a glance, he's tall enough that you're going to need to stop calling people 'giant'. You have to revise your expectations of what that word means whenever you see a taller guy. This one is ten feet tall, and not just stretched out either. He's simply proportionately a little under twice as large as a normal person.

He wears a wicker helmet and huge thick gloves, obscuring every inch of his skin, which makes him the seventh division's captain, Sajin Komamura, if you remember right. "You are here to show the efforts of your studies. Do not forget that." He booms. "Blood will be shed, but blood itself is not the goal of a soul reaper. If you find yourself on the other end of a friend's blade, then treasure the confrontation, and let it go. Do not let this consume you. Do not let it endanger the bonds formed between you at this academy. That is all."

The captain sits down.

A vice captain stands to take his place, a woman with tousled white hair cut short around her head. "I am Isane Kotetsu, vice captain of the fourth division. There are members of my division stationed nearby to patch up your injuries, but please be polite and keep the intent behind your blows less than lethal."

Then the tan man with the glasses who gave the acceptance speech at the beginning of the year steps up. "In order to create a more level playing field, I have decided to randomize the matches. When I call your numbers, step forth into the ring. You will begin when I say 'go'."

The first four matches go by quickly. Academy students mis-matched against others of higher skill quickly find themselves either sent to the general seating instead of the part of the stands reserved for competitors. Your first round comes more quickly than you expected, and you're actually surprised when he calls out, "number fourteen and ten."

Your opponent is a thick man who quickly whips out his blade and charges at the mark. He's coming straight at you, and Zangetsu is still on your back! He barrels forward with the force of a truck, unstoppable.

Predictable.

He's so much slower than Kukaku. You step into his guard before he can bring down his sword, throw him over your hip, and then help him on his way with a pointed finger and, "Hado One, Sho."

That pretty much sets the tone for your first few matches. You bash the man in the second round out of the ring with your shield bakudo, and things don't get better from there. The people in the stands notice, quieting down when you take to the ring and watching you with keen interest. You can almost feel the weight of the captain on the back of your neck. His spiritual power is... actually something you can almost feel, like a warmth or a breeze. Is that what people feel around you?

There is one other person watching worth mentioning. "That's it! That's my cousin!" Kukaku hollers as you send your third opponent down with a cry of "Hado Four, Byakurai!" and a flash of electricity.

Blushing slightly, you go back to your seat and do your best to think about the rest of the matches. Round one had fifty, round two had 25, round three had 12, or was it 13? You weren't counting. You're not sure if you're going to fight Takako before that Jirobo guy or not, but...

"Flap away, Tsunzakigarasu!"

Takako must have gotten called up while you were distracted, because she's in the ring. Glints of silver metal arch through the air around her in a storm of flashing steel. It only takes a second for her pale skin and white uniform top to turn as red as her pants, and she drops like a stone.

"Winner, Jirobo Ikkanzaka." The announcer says, but your attention is focused on the man in the ring, all your intent bent toward the back of his neck. Sweat suddenly covers his skin like a sheet, and he slowly turns to face you.

"I'm not actually very good at hado, or bakuda, or hakuda." You say, and Zangetsu almost leaps eagerly to your hand. "But you're not the only person in this tournament with a shikai. Be ready."

And then you sit down again. Jirobo licks his fat lips, but soon regains his earlier bluster.

What are you going to do to him for being so brutal with your friend?
[] Just beat him down and be done with it.
[] Beat him with your most impressive moves.
[] Drag the fight out until he regrets it.
[] Throw him out of the ring to deny him a fight.

[X] Just beat him down and be done with it.

He wants aggressive? He'll get aggressive than.

Edit: Also, Chocolate, I know you probably don't trust him, but it was Gin.

And cue the paranoid insanity explosion!

No fancy gimmicks. Just focus on defeating him. Anything else is a distraction.

Not to mention there's that canon scene between Isshin and Grand Fisher where Isshin explains exactly why Captains keep their swords constrained/normalized/whatever-the-fucking-term-is in which it makes the goddamn sword stronger(and why having FUCKHUEG blades isn't a good thing) and it helps in restraining spiritual pressure and not affecting the Living World. Zangetsu really will need to get over it eventually, especially with Ichigo's stated goal of being able to head back to the Living World and check up on his family. It's not like canon where Ichigo was an ally to SS/on his own side/Urahara's side and there was never any real time to train Ichigo's control to the level necessary to do so(I don't count filler crap) and most of the fights were in SS/Hueco Mundo/False! Karakura/Wandenriech(?). We're under the command of Soul Society and unless we decide to go rouge, what they say goes and we(Read: Zangetsu) are gonna need to learn restraint. There's only so far that they will allow for Zanpakuto behaviors and shit anyway I'm sure.

E: Oh, hey update.

So, in order:

Curbstomp
Style on him
Cherry Tap
Ring out

... I'm tempted to go for cherry tap, as that'd actually probably be more impressive than anything else, but on the other hand... Styling on him.

[X] Beat him with your most impressive moves.

Only damn reason Kenpachi is an exception is due to the fact that he willingly lets himself be restrained by 90%

[X] Throw him out of the ring to deny him a fight.

Injuring his pride like this will hurt much more than a beating :drevil:

[X] Just beat him down and be done with it.

Denying a fight will not make Zangetsu happy, and Ichigo's not really one for needlessly dramatic or flashy statements, so let's just go for the straitforward 'yeah, I win' option.

[X] Beat him with your most impressive moves.

Styling on dudes is always a good idea. And in our case, we're capable of not overdoing it, but we will anyway.

Can't see how a ton of flying blades would have a not 'completely wreck' state, really.
