It's kinda too bad it won't win, as presumably Zangetsu has ABSURD spiritual density at knife-size - and that, as well as being able to at-will shrink your sword could be pretty darn useful.

Get in a sword clash with default size Zangetsu? Shrink him down and cleave through the suddenly far less spiritually dense (in comparison) sword.

Trouble getting past a foe's guard? Size-shift Zangetsu so it's flat out not physically present where the blocking sword is.

It'd be funny if Ichigo valued the skill Zangetsu showed off in an attempt to tick off Ichigo... would probably rustle the sword's jimmies that it can't even in good conscience object since that squarely falls in the 'do whatever works to win' category.

EDIT: Also at that size Zangetsu could do a whole lot better at pulling off a Flying Dart impression, with its cloth - and be more functionaly as a ranged weapon, sans energy blast, for it!

Hell, if Ichigo does that swinging ribbon thing Zangetsu did in the canon King and the Horse fight, I'd still consider that a massive improvement over canon Ichigo's fighting style.

Well, it's definitely more visually impressive, certainly. Definitely not as bare bones as his canon style. Does introduce a noticeable opening, though, what with at various points the actual weapon being a distance away from where it can be controlled.

Yeah, that's true, but that's why when you're dead you aren't constrained by petty mortal concerns like that. Otherwise Ichigo should've been able to take advantage of such a thing. Well, ignoring the fact that they were philosophizing at each other(More so Zangetsu than Ichigo, but still...).

The previews have been slightly misleading before. All we know is that Zangetsu shrinks himself. It could be after or during the fights. We don't know the when or why!

But I want to know! @TPK this isn't fair! Why must you torture me in this way, each and every time?

I'm not sure why people seem to think that Zangetsu's not going to do the same thing in all of the options. This is something you set in motion the moment you decided to try and get some more control, after all.

Since it's outta the bag I've been laughing for a couple days now about the fact Zangetsu was going to shrink himself. Like, seriously. Pissing off our Zanpakutou by keeping unreleased and then trying to make him shrink? YACHIRA, a ZANPAKUTO SPIRIT HERSELF told us Zangetsu was 'Proud' just like SHER is. They are the type of Zanpakuto Spirits that hate being restrained.

Of course he was going to take a bit of petty vengeance. You pissed him off. This is exactly what Yumichika's Zanpakuto does to him when he pisses it off.

...Yachiru is not every prideful Zanpakuto. Besides, unfortunately the only way to get Zangetsu to listen to you is by beating it over his head many times.

Ehh I don't consider her the expert since literally every sword master dynamic is difference, and reflection different aspects of each person plus good relationships take time. We've known the guy a couple weeks we need more meditation and soul exploring

As someone who voted "hold back a little" starting before the previews, I really hope we do get to have the tiny zangetsu conversation. I almost changed my vote to get that, and I'm happy that it might still be on the table.

I'll admit, I misremembered the update a bit and Yachiru isn't that proud, but my point stands. A Sword Spirit outright TOLD US ours was Proud as fuck, the update after we achieved it outright said that when Ichigo tried to keep him unreleased Zangetsu bucked and strained against his form, and we still chose to proceed.

There were plenty enough hints foreshadowing something like this would happen, and now it's come to bite us in the ass.

Yeah, except the type of Pride you are talking about that will get us killed IS hubris. It is RIGHT THERE, in the TAGS! You say pride will get us killed? It's not ICHIGO'S pride, it's ZANGETSU'S. Zangetsu would be simply content to just be in a released state. that isn't PRDIE on our end. We're not saying we're better than anyone. But ZANGETSU wants to show off, but people keep deciding to STIFLE him.

it's like you people forget that we need to reach an understanding with Zangetsu, to realize he is a part of ourselves and find harmony in that. NOT forcing him to heal. You can't force your Zanpakuto under your sway through sheer power, or it fights you constantly. There is no breaking in Zangetsu like you would a Wild Horse. You have to ACCEPT HIM!

The idiot wants to mess around once we want to let him show off. There is a time and place to show off. That he doesn't accept it, is what keeps him stifled. If Ichigo can swallow his pride for his end goals, then Zangetsu can too.
 
On the bright side, though, Tinygetsu will be hilariously dangerous. Like, none of his mass goes away. It's just smaller. Anybody tries to block that and he's going to hit them like a wrecking ball that is also a ludicrously sharp knife, which is exactly what he will be.

And it gives us an excuse to learn the spinning-cloth trick, too.
