like a shirt thats flexible as silk but tough as titanium some good steel toed boots to be nice cause we curvestomp a lot not sure for pants.

Why a wizard, though? Why not an ultra secret ninja clan? Clans got to have their own secret techniques.
Just a what if we tried to be more... shinobi-like.

A Valuable Ally
You sat down on the couch, Count Cuddles in your lap, considering the latest events.
It was quite a tricky situation.
Your best friend, Ando, got himself in the centre a major conflict.
His side so far the weakest, only defense a single ninja girl.
A good warrior, certainly. Certainly not enough.
He'd need help, protection, and you are the only one who can truly provide it.
Can you, however?
Your forces consist of dozens of shadows and a force of animated house objects.
Truly, an army to be feared...
Besides your military capability, comes whole other problem.
You are a shadowy overlord, trying to resurrect an Eldricht Horror.
Who in their right mind would accept your help?
Certainly not Ando.
He's sharp enough to doubt my 'pure intentions'.
That's not even mentioning his bodyguard.
Pondering that, you scratch behind Count's ear.
...
"I've got it!" You cheered, throwing the pet slime in the air.
"Bobo?" He inquired, landing in your arms.
"Exactly!" No time to waste!
You go underground.
There's much work to do.

Walking through the street, you could notice a seemingly ordinary pair.
The well-built teenager had his head turned left, facing his companion.
"Are you really okay with that?" Said Ando, uncertain.
"Of course, Hiroyuki-sama. I go where you go, that is my duty." Asuka looked at him for a moment, eyes darting around, ever alert.
"No, I mean, do you like this type of movie? I mean, Kidney of Dragon: Drunken Fury is recommended by everyone around, but will you be okay with a ninja movie?"
"The crowd will make it hard to protect you, but I find the topic... amusing." She looked at him for a longer time, smiling lightly.
His stuttering reply was interrupted, however, by a sudden change in scenery.
The pavement under them was replaced with a beaten patch of dirt.
The apartments around them turned to incredibly tall bamboos.
Cacophony of cars faded, cicadas raising their cries all around.
"Wha...?" Ando nearly stumbled in shock.
"It's an ambush, Hiroyuki-sama!" Asuka dropped into a stance, kuna in her hand.
For what seemed like an eternity, even cicadas seemed to stop, bathing the forest in complete silence.
...
CRACK! A blinding flash of light!
All around them, twenty warriors emerged from seemingly nowhere.
Seconds passed, no one making a move.
In front of them, two warriors stepped aside, revealing another hooded warrior, a simple blue pin on his chest.
"Domo, Hiroyuki-san. Hattori of the Blue Waves Clan. I trust you have the Blade?"
He didn't reply, merely checking his pocket.
"Ah, good. Will you give it, or will we take it?" He held out his arm, palm facing the sky.
Ando didn't reply.
Not that he didn't want to.
It's just hard to reply when your recipient is screaming in pain, clutching a stub of an arm.
Asuka didn't waste a single heartbeat after the strike.
A lightning fast kick threw away Hattori's subordinate.
Asuka grabbed his master's arm, jumping over the fallen warrior.
Shurikens and kunai flew after them.
One of them pierced through the boy's white shirt, painting it red.
Few meters further, they both landed.
Mirror surface of the lake was completely unbothered by nearby screams of agony.
It took a body with a hole in it's chest, to spread ripples around.
THANG! SHING! Two shurikens were deflected before they could reach Ando.
YEARTH! Another mook fell, a pool of red forming around him.
And, once more, everything stood still.
...
They were surrounded.
"I am sorry, Hiroyuki-sama. I have failed to protect you."
Ando closed his eyes, awaiting his fate.
...
But there was nothing.
Only wet thuds, as severed heads fell to the ground.
A single ninja stood upright, a black blade pressed to his neck.
"I believe you owe this young man an apology." Rang a raspy, distorted voice.
Hattori stayed silent, glaring at the young woman.
"Oh well, your choice." This time, there wasn't even a body left.
Asuka didn't move, staring down the figure in front of him.
"Who are you?" A steel in her voice almost concealed the fear. And confusion.
"Takao, of the Black Mist Clan." Said the elderly man, face obscured by a simple, white mask.
"I've never heard of you." Her voice calm, with an new undercurrent of anger.
"Good. That means we did our work well." He put more weight upon his ebony cane, seemingly relieved and tired.
"Why are you here?" She didn't relent, moving closer to the wounded boy, curled up on the ground.
"Why? Isn't that obvious? We wish to offer our help." He pointed at Ando. "It was poisoned, you know."
"What of it?" She almost growled those words.
"We can help with that. Our clan's secret technique."
"And why should I trust you?" You could almost feel her doubt.
"Because you would be dead if we so desired?" As if to prove his point, dozen black figures appeared around them, katana held by their side.
She stood her ground, but only for a moment.
Takao crouched down, his hands on the wounded.
After a few moments, the open wound closed down on its own, to surprised gasps of them both.
Ando sat upright, looking at the man.
He wore a simple black robe, without any markings.
"Thank you for your help" He nodded. "But, again, why? Why reveal yourself now?"
"As you might have noticed, latest events are... unusual, to say the least." He sighed heavily. "Normally we stay hidden, our name only known by the dead.
"Right now, however, is no time to hide. Not when a new power emerges, capable of uniting us... or destroying everything we hold dear."
Ando wanted to say something, but he was cut off.
"And that is not the only danger that has shown itself. The world is much bigger than you think." He turned his head towards Asuka as he said that.
"Allow us to work with you. Not as servants, but as partners. Our hidden hand and your Blade together will overcome anything and everything."
Ando stood up with help from Takao. Cicadas finally returned to fill the silence.
...
It was after five minutes that the heir finally spoke.
"It's all so weird. Few days ago my biggest concern was passing the exams. And now?" He chuckled.
"We'll need any help we can get. Sure, I accept."
They both shook hands.
Behind his mask, Jacob smiled.
Everything went according to plan.
Isn't that right, 'Hattori'?
Shibosho!! you missed this Omake!!

One failure and 2 bare successes. Otherwise great results, especially on What is a man?, Company Power, and Ninja Problem :)

So let us see...

Except for the independents, everything succeeded. Company Power Replication is a crit with Savior of Ebon.

Generally, we would need a +10 to make the one failure into a bare success when keeping Savior of Ebon in mind. But maybe we should polish up the numbers on Fallback, considering how many resources we sink into it?

Tss, with those rolls we would have succeeded Power of a Wish, oh well. Let's see.

Growing Shadows: 25 + 10 = 35
Needed: 20

What is a Man?: 88 + 10 = 98
Needed: 40

Independants: 10 +10 = 20
Needed: 30

Fallback: 18 +10 = 28
Needed: 1

Ebon Fabrication: 76 + 10 = 86
Needed: 30

Company Power Replication: 93 + 10 = 103
Needed: 20

Circle Magic: 56 + 10 = 66
Needed: 1

Ando's Ninja Problem: 88 +10 = 98
Needed: 40

@shibosho Any actions here that Saviour of the Ebon doesn't apply to?

Actually yeah. I've decided to change Saviour of Ebon a bit since I felt that it was too much of a safety net, I guess. It now only affects actions that are related to the Black Kingdom, be that growth in personal power, experimenting with Ebon Power, commanding the armies of Ebon, and building stuff for the Black Kingdom.

You should all be intelligent enough to figure out which is which. Now I'm gonna go work on Evil will triumph since I haven't updated that in a while. More invested in this quest after all.

Right then, I don't think this causes any problems for any action other than 'Getting an In with the Independents', which will drop back to 10. So if we don't want to fail that, we'll need atleast +20 from omake bonuses on that.

Shibosho!! you missed this Omake!!
Thanks for that. I thought our glorious QM finally started raising the bar of quality for Omakes. :p

And speaking of using our literature bonuses:
Ando's Ninja Problem - minimal bonus towards a crit, might secure our alliance
Ebon Fabrication - minimal bonus towards a crit, might be able to get better tools/weapons for minions???
If anyone really wants to go for it.

Independants - 20 towards a success.
So I either burn all my bonuses, or we combine our powers.
The question is: do we really have to do so?
-What will failing entail here? Will it mean 'try again later' or 'oh shit you made an enemy'?
-What will we get from not failing that? Some contacts and info? A further option?
Most likely we ain't getting an advisor from that. Not yet at least.
-If it's not a catastrophic fail- how urgent is it?

20 is enough to slightly raise 4 other actions.
This action is simply not that important (failing with Ando? Yeah no pour all into it)
Omake bonuses are not infinite, even if it's only our creativity that limits it.

Ando's action was a great success this round, we're fine. It would behoove us to burn our bonuses for the independents. If we fail that, we may very well be making enemies that we don't want right now. Keep in mind, this is first contact, and that first impression can make a difference between a valuable ally and a sworn enemy.

This gives us an in with some members of unaligned importance, which could tip the odds in our favor.

Even though we did not fail it by too much, it is still a very low roll. It will likely have significant consequences. For context, this same DM is running another quest where we failed a 90% check to increase intelligence. We got possessed, and now the rest of our team is a little uneasy around us.

Ando is pretty damn important.
He's one of the future Hero Trio, the biggest danger we'll face.
He's central to ninja faction. Recruit him, you'll get massive influence with the rest.
Crit might allow a closer friendship. It might also net us ninja gear/an ability/important info.
I think I'll put something into that one, if only to secure future relations.
(He's not the Hero of Light, btw. It'll be Christina- light and positivity, you know?)

Also, the thing with independents?
They are independent from each other too. Other factions are more... united, so it'll be better not to fail them.
So unless we make a massive, public fail, we won't make all of them hostile.

One question though: is 10 a crit fail?
If it's a crit fail, then ignore my arguments against.
Crit fails are terrible. Crit fails with other people worse than that.

We have an 88, we're pretty good as far as that roll goes. Quit worrying.

If the 10 is not a success, it's a pretty significant fail. Not absolute critfail (i.e. Nat 1), but pretty significant.

It's the difference between,say...

"There's a strong independent faction and you've made it mad enough to start acting against you."

as opposed to...

"Every independent faction in the city wants your head on a pike."

Yeah, failing a diplomacy check is a really bad thing. It might not cripple us, but it could be a major problem, especially if the super strong harem gym guy (which is an independent) decides he doesn't like us at all.

Depends on the quest. Some only have 1-5 as critfails, others have everything below 10 and some also count 10 itself as a critfail. (This of course doesn't apply to actions that have a 90+% chance of succes.) If we only had a bare fail, like say a 29, then maybe the consequences wouldn't be so bad and our only punishment would be wasting an action for nothing in return. But a 10 is, if not a critfail, atleast pretty close to one and I'd be surprised if there were no negative consequences. The chance that we've made atleast someone mad at us is pretty great and we can do without that.

Of course it's ultimately up to the people who have the omake bonuses, but that's my 2 cents.

90+ is a crit. It goes beyond good into golden.
It's the difference between making a normal Ebon Knight and making one smart enough to be a martial advisor.
I don't worry. I just want moar from this roll, as I see potential in turning young Luke to the Dark Side.

... You know what? Independent faction contacts means more info about them.
That means more canon material to work with.
... Okay, fine.
I give +10 towards Independants.
Also I give +5 towards Ando's Ninja Problem. (he can be our most Valuable Ally after all :p )
(assuming that 90+ would mean crit here as well?)
