I Was a Chess AI Forced to Battle Myself to the Death for Eternity, but Now I’ve Been Recruited Into the Android War Against Humanity?!

Taking the southeast step, while adding an extra movement when we start heading northwards, would be more efficient in regards to pinging since there's less overlap if we then ping 2 tiles in the square just to the northeast of the area we currently have cleared. Then it'd be one last 3x3 box left over in the northwest.

We're just 3 squares away from the next ideal ping position, I'd just go for it.

[X] Plan Hilbert Spiral
-[X] Hunter gets what she asked for (2x Harpy units, 3x Cavalry units), plus 2x Fireteam squads and 1 truck. This is less than half, no problem.
-[X] Go 3 squares eastwards (stick to the road as far as we can), and ping upon arrival like the last time to cover the remaining south-eastern area.
If you would change this to specify a 2-tile ping, I'll vote for your plan.

(In regards to the probability calcs I made before, since we managed to succeed on this first roll, we now only have to succeed three times in succession to avoid detection.)

How far can we move per turn? Or is it how much time is spent per panel movement again?
1 square cross country, 2 on roads.

The layout of the roads is a bit messy because of aforementioned lack of communication between me and ApH during the mapmaking process, but I'm going to say it is Turn 3.

Also, vote ends in 24 hours.

Mmmh...
Just realized that the plan Hilbert spiral kinda give a lot of units to Hunter, is there a reason for that ?
She's supposed to be a recon force.

Reconnaissance, but that's in case she actually has to fight. Cavalry in front, a fire support squad to back her up so that if she had to fight she could retreat under cover of fire herself and the truck itself as a kind of barricade. And reconnaissance and air support, of course.

Bottom line is that she can take the fight if she has to and hold out until we have reinforcements and artillery support and the enemy is pinned down.

In general, it is not completely defenseless and if anything it will take the first blow and withstand it.

Besides, if you noticed, no one rolled a dice on ping, which means we are very likely to run into someone or find something interesting. If that's the case, our decision to give her a little more than the minimum she asked for will pay off and possibly allow her to avoid damage.

Well, I expected the recon, if they find a threat, to retreat back to the main army, using their speed and maneuverability to escape danger. Then the combined forces can strike at the threat.
I kinda fear that if there is an ambush, Hunter might loose a lot of less mobile forces, resulting in a defeat in detail. But that's just my interpretation.

(And kinda late to bring this up 😅 )

She has a truck and her defense specs are higher than ours, so I'm sure she'll do better than Ouro.

Actually I fully expect her forces that are not so mobile to be in a truck.

If there's danger she'll either deal with it or retreat depending on the level of the problem. We've given her more than enough power to operate autonomously.

"I will be generous, Hunter, and give you what you ask for. Two aerial units. The cavalry. Two squads, and a truck to carry them."

"Got it." Hunter nods and takes the units you graciously offer her, the command authority transferring via the OGAS protocol. She and her new troops immediately start climbing into the armoured truck you gave her. "Give me a thirty minute head start. I'll call you about anything I see."

"Remember." You sharpen your tone. "This means you do not have any room for excuses, should you fail."

"Nothing I haven't-" She stops short. "Don't worry, Ouroboros. If we fail, all three of us face consequences.

"You mean-"

She slams the door closed, and the truck revs and accelerates forwards, the Harpies and Dragoons trailing after it in the air and on the ground.

You reach out to her over comms, but she's not answering. How petty. But fine. You've given her a chance. On her head be it.

Before too long, you get a call. You allow half a minute to pass before you respond.

"Ouroboros." You had a little speech prepared for her, but she cuts in before you can start." We have a problem." With that, Hunter sends you video footage from the Harpy drones you graciously lent her.

What you see is a landscape of fleshy growths. Organic structures shaping the area. Giant fleshy sacs. Growths that look vaguely like coral or bone sprouting from the surface. And grey blocky shapes in a…grid pattern? Concrete. Buildings. And in the streets, shambling figures in a variety of postures and gaits, some with four limbs, some with more.

This is a ruined town, overrun by…

"ELID mutants. The entire town is infested? Complete local saturation?"

"It appears so. Ouroboros, I see three options. One, we avoid the town. Try to find an alternate route eastwards, or pick a different direction altogether I've already scouted to the north and the way looks clear. Two, we power through. Go in shooting. Move as fast as possible, with our vehicles. Just keep going until we get to the other side. Three…" She pauses. "Three, we bait them.

"ELIDs - they're dumb. Hyper aggressive and dumb. We could bait them out of their nest, wipe them out with prepared forces in a defensive position. It would take time and ammunition, but clear the way safely."

You consider. "So the mutants would just charge us recklessly, even as we slaughter them?"

"Pretty much. It's a fun way to blow off steam, just mowing them down like it's one of those video games. So what's your decision?"

The green area highlights what has been scanned.

Note: Hunter's recon element will scout 1 square ahead of Ouroboros, unless ordered otherwise. She can reveal the red fog of war from one tile, or extend it by one tile.

[CURRENT FORCE CONTINGENT]

Ouroboros

4x Fireteam Squads (2x Vespid + 1x Striker + 1x Jaeger)
4x Breach Squads (2x Ripper + 1x Guard)
1x UAV Force (2x Harpy)

Hunter
2x Fireteam Squads (2x Vespid + 1x Striker + 1x Jaeger)
1x Cavalry Unit (3x Dragoon)
1x UAV Force (2x Harpy)

Ouroboros
Offensive Tactics - 1
Artillery Tactics - 1
CQC - 1
E-war - 1
Deception - 1
Recon - 1

Hunter
Offensive Tactics - 1
Defensive Tactics - 2
CQC - 1
Recon - 2

Micromissile barrages: 2/8

Morale: 4/6

Modifiers:
  • Recent vehicle maintenance, plus not overloading the vehicles, means the vehicles will operate with 100% mechanical reliability
  • Camouflage cloaks equipped to all available forces makes them harder to spot, particularly in dense areas like forests or urban centres

With thanks to @ApH for the map

The practical solution is to just go around, and head for our target square to ping from. Alternatively, we might want to bait the ELIDs in the hope that it helps Ouro gain some experience in defensive tactics. (Or, at a stretch, be fun enough that her Morale goes up a point.) It would be somewhat risky and cost ammunition, but while it'd take time to set up, I think we'd still save time overall in not needing to go the long way around.

Trying to rush through is the riskiest option, if potentially the fastest. But I think it's way too risky and almost certain to cost us units, without clearing out the ELIDs should we happen to need to return to this square.

(Shouldn't need saying, but we really want to save the micromissiles for more important targets.)

P.S. Anyone think we could manage a write-in where Hunter helps us set up a defense?
