It Belongs to a Museum

[X] Plan: Haakon's Landing
-[X] Create Exhibit (an exhibit focused on the events surrounding the landing of Haakon the Bloody in Lustria)
-[X] Investigate (Haakon the Bloody)
-[X] Acquire Relics - via Princess Aelsabrim Fallenstar
--[X] Skeletons (Rare)

Given the info we got on how tags work, I no longer feel the need to specify exactly what's going into the exhibit. If Paht thinks it fits, it can go in.

[X] Plan: Journey To Create The Codes
-[X] Create Exhibit (an exhibit focused on the events surrounding the landing of Haakon the Bloody in Lustria)
-[X] Acquire Relic (Lizardmen skeletons)
-[X] Acquire Relic (copies of all the pirate codes of Awakening)

[X] Plan: Journey To Create The Flags
-[X] Create Exhibit (an exhibit focused on the events surrounding the landing of Haakon the Bloody in Lustria)
-[X] Acquire Relic (Lizardmen skeletons)
-[X] Acquire Relic (copies of all the pirate flags of Awakening)

Reasoning here:
I still think multiple personal acquisitions are a bad idea, though. We'd get more bang for our buck by ordering bulk skeletons and seeing what we get.

EDIT: If it helps, I think Lizardmen skeletons are what you get when you order 'small' skeletons? Since 'large' seems to mean dinosaurs and such.

To business, then. First plan adopts @Sinsystems' excellent, thorough and comprehensive Exhibit proposal and commits fully to getting the biggest bang of an opening out of what we've got, researching the most enigmatic part of the exhibit and drawing in a potentially very interested (and mobile) crowd. Second and third plans look to make that potential exhibit even better first!

[X] Plan Sufficiently Maximised Martial Mien
- [X] Develop Museum - Research Relic (Palanquin)
- [X] Broaden Horizons - Cultivate Audience (Skeggi Sailors - for Lizardman plunder, skaldic tales and the Norscan history represented by the Niflhundr and Fire Serpent Fortress)
- [X] Develop Museum - Create Exhibit
-- [X] An Exhibit depicting Luthor's early days in the region, how he and his men laid claim to these lands, battled against the natives and conquered it! Mainly focused around Harkon, with Lizardmen and Lustria artifacts acting as a means to show the challenges he faced, along with the wealth he acquired.
--- [X] Centerpiece: The Niflhundr
--- [X] Companion Artifacts (Piracy): Fire Serpent Fortress and Death Mask of Haakon the Bloody. These will be used to build a more complete picture of Harkon's early days and represent him in the exhibit's narrative.
--- [X] Companion Artifacts (Lustria/Lizardmen): The assorted Dinosaur skeletons and Lizardmen artifacts. These will mainly be used to represent the challenges and dangers that Harkon faced during his early days. Put emphasis on their strength and power, until further research can be conducted.

[X] Plan Even More Maximised Martial Mien
- [X] Develop Museum - Acquire Relic (Lizardmen Bodies/Skeletons - Awakening)
- [X] Develop Museum - Acquire Relic (Lizardmen Weapons and Armour - Awakening)
- [X] Acquire Relics - via Princess Aelsabrim Fallenstar - Plants

[X] Plan Even More Maximised Martial Mien (Now with Flags!)
- [X] Develop Museum - Acquire Relic (Lizardmen Bodies/Skeletons - Awakening)
- [X] Develop Museum - Acquire Relic (Pirate Flags of the Vampire Coast - Awakening)
- [X] Acquire Relics - via Princess Aelsabrim Fallenstar - Plants

In the example of what we might get for that action Boney listed dinosaur skeletons, which we have. I mean more is always good, and they'd be rare dinosaur skeletons, but I don't think it helps us create any new exhibits or develop what we can currently do very much. I'd rather just go for the gems if it comes to that.

Would the way to get lizardmen skeletons then be a personal acquire relics option?
Regular skinks and sauruses, yes.
With how things stand in regards to our relationship and her abilities, Fallenstar can/will only get us animal and dinosaur skeletons. She's doing it all through her late husbands company, which did that kind of thing. I'd imagine she's not eager to piss off her neighbors by trafficking in their corpses.

-[X] Learn (Lizardmen)

Also using @Sinsystems well thought out exhibit but I really want to learn surface lizardmen asap as they make up a large chunk of our collection and the fact we know almost nothing about them is going to make their artifacts display lacking until that is fixed.

The other matter you see to is a set of counterparts to the reptilian skeletons you've been acquiring, with the genera idea of depicting Luthor Harkon's invasion of the mainland.

[X] Plan: Landing and Learning

Our Skald's knowledge of lizardmen is entirely in how to fight them. If we spend goodwill for another researcher, I think we're unlikely to get another one with a Lustrian bent any time soon, so it behooves us to plug the gap in non-combat lizardmen trivia ourselves at least a little. We've got a decent chunk of a Lustrian exhibit ready to go and waiting on an appropriate centrepiece. May as well get enough background knowledge on the topic to fill out some tiny plaques ahead of time.

Plants will only help to supplement what we do have even further because a good chunk of poison is plant derived as well and it's an important part of the Lizardman arsenal.

I'd imagine such would be important knowledge to visitors who wants to raid Lizardman areas themselves afterwards too so that might be a good draw for people to come in.

As these things are going to get lost in the thread very quickly, the 'QM-approved' options for personal relic hunting so far are:
Things that either: can't currently be done as a personal action, or whose acquisition is probably worth less to the museum than you might think due to the goal of the project being prestige rather than education:
  • Building a Nehekharan tomb as a centrepiece (at minimum, need a Necrotect on staff)
  • Hosting a gala (need a lot more traffic)
  • Paintings or other depictions of famous people made without the person on hand for the artist to work from.
  • In general, replicas of actual relics have zero prestige value
  • Passing off forgeries and fakes as real relics, while plausible, isn't a path to pursue in this particular quest.

I think collecting a full set of (thing) is what turns ordinary relics into centerpieces? Any kind of collectable that's hard to get and notionally comes in a set would probably do. In this case, the full Luthor Harkon Deathmask set would be, at minimum, a twelve-action project... though perhaps it might give some additional insights into the nature of our patron's identity issues? Probably not an immediate priority, but it might be a fun side project.
I can't help but imagine that, If the deathmask(s) and it's exhibit grows popular enough it might become a cultural Thing for local vampires/notable undead to take on deathmasks in light of their histories, backgrounds, and deeds, and once there's a critical mass you might even see other aspects of Luthor take on deathmasks of their own accord.

Even besides all of that, though, it would be a neat way to signpost portions of the museum dedicated to different eras Luthor was involved in. In a "we have this exhibit ready to go for this era of history, so why not ask the right aspect of Luthor for a deathmask of significance to it?" sort of way.

Considering that the exhibit is going to be about fighting the Lizardmen and their martial might that Luthor overcame (plus their very shiny things that he stole), why do we especially need to learn or communicate information about their broader society just yet? Considering Pahtsekhen's skillset, I'd say his very limited research time before an exhibit opening next turn is best spent on the mysterious magical palanquin, which I'm sure that people will be drawn to. Then, if we do have the option to get someone with Lizardman knowledge on board next turn, we'll have saved ourselves the trouble; alternatively, if we don't, we can always have Paht delve into the subject of the Lizardmen personally thereafter.

I'm more looking to the future exhibits with the remainder of our relic/skeleton haul for the learning action, rather than the current one. And yes, we could potentially get someone with a different facet of lizardman knowledge in future. But that will always be the case. On every topic.

With the first exhibit already being launched, I'm happy to take one longer-term action in a three-action plan. Personal knowledge on a topic we're likely to keep encountering again and again through the quest (being based in Lustria) is useful to have in general.

This point needs stressing, I think. Note that the action "Acquire Relic (Suitable Preserved Corpses + Clothing & Deathmasks to represent Harkon and his initial crew - Awakening)" produced exactly one capital-R Relic, the Deathmask of Haakon the Bloody. We incidentally fished up some corpses in the same action, and they might show up again as flavor when we make the associated Exhibit, but they didn't appear as a Relic, weren't added to the list of Museum Contents, and so are presumably worthless (in Museum prestige terms, at least).

To put it another way, it seems like tailoring bodies into dioramas and such falls below the level of being a Museum-level action? It's the sort of thing Paht might casually do in the background as part of preparations for an exhibit to fill it out, along the same lines as figuring out which words to write on the plaque describing the Relics presented... but it's not a thing that we need to deliberately spend actions doing.

Agreed on just about all counts - but the first exhibit hasn't been launched. We've got two actions to prepare for the launch of that exhibit, which will shape the amount of goodwill that Luthor Harkon is going to have for our efforts and will in turn influence our capacity for subsequent turns! This isn't the time to plan for the future - it's the time to plough everything into our current endeavour!

(Assuming, of course, that we do launch the exhibit on our current turn, which we may elect not to do.)

My votes not counting for this so I'ma give it a bit and check again

[x] Plan: Attract likely New audiences with Value and Magic
- [x] Investigate Relic - Palequin
- [x] Acquire Relics - Gems
- [x] Acquire Relics - Plants

I suppose we did make the "mistake" of picking an enthusiastic educator and historian instead of a proper (for the time period) museum curator

Truth was always going to be important. There's going to be emphasis and misconceptions and unknowns and agendas but actual history was always going to actually matter.

That was a bunch of great lore, and the existence of a Lizardmen necropolis is interesting. The way they're depicted in other quests on the site* would make one think that non-Slann aren't really honored posthumously.

*Not that this should have any bearing here except where other quests and IBtaM are both drawing from the same source material, but y'know.

The buried 'City of the Dead' on Fuming Serpent Island is 4e canon. I figure they'd be pretty cavalier with the bodies of the rank and file, but those that go above and beyond would earn a more respectful treatment.

Hmm... Okay, thought - given that your post on the topic noted that it was the uncertainty of acquisitions that made putting an acquired item into an exhibit immediately difficult, Boney, would putting an item that Paht created himself into an exhibit immediately be fine? Thinking about the possibility of creating a second death mask for Harkon the Sorcerer - given the note about his history, it seems apt for an exhibit covering conquests in Lustria! Of course, if you'd prefer to keep the rules consistent, that's entirely fair.

That would be fine, but in this case specifically I'd say it's not really a priority. The invasion of Huatl was during a period of transition between the Bloody and the Sorcerer so it can't really be said to belong to one over the other. Either mask works as well as the other here.

The bodies were filed under Props, at the bottom of the Museum Contents post. They'll give you more options for what an exhibit actually looks like but won't contribute to the raw numbers.

I see; they weren't flagged explicitly in the turn's text, and I must've missed them at the bottom of the list when I skimmed the Museum Contents post while comparing tags. The "Props" wording is helpful, though; it makes a clear distinction between valuable antiquities and set dressing.

[X] Plan: Landing and Learning

I'm not sold on creating the exhibit in the same turn we're getting the proper learning and research as its going to immediately highlight what we got wrong. But the parts of researching lizardmen and acquiring those corpses are more important, and the process of creating the exhibit will be a learning opportunity itself.

Given that people seem in favour of covering our bases on the Lizardmen, here's a plan variant that goes for that rather than researching the palanquin specifically. Really would urge people to consider the value of attracting an interested audience from beyond Awakening for our opening - Luthor Harkon wants this museum to spread his prestige and if we can prove that it can do that from the very start he's likely to look upon us favourably.

Luthor Harkon wants this museum to spread his prestige as it pertains to convincing the captains of awakening they better fucking not jump ship.

I don't think he'll COMPLAIN about an outside audience getting attracted but it is not at any point something he's talked about as a goal of the museum.
