After the Ashes: A Fire Nation Chancellor Quest

Somewhat more concerning was the presence of his Water Tribe mistress - he didn't like the hard look in that child's eyes -
Random thought but I'd love to be a fly on the wall when someone accidentally cottons to that little notion in front of Katara and Zuko

[X] a subdued and almost strangely normal woman; a part of him was surprised that the guards managed to pick her out at all, though he supposed that the Ministry of Domestic Harmony was well incentivized to keep tabs on individuals such as her. After all, she was a Sanctioned Broker, a more polite term for a spy, and one of the few people that the Fire Nation retained to handle under-the-table talks with the Earth Kingdom, a fraught endeavor given the hostility that exists between the two powers. Still, given the Fire Lord's evident intentions of making peace with the Earth Kingdom, it might prove advantageous to have someone familiar with them to arrange it… and her lack of allies in court would make it relatively easy to see her removed when the time came. Earth kingdom contacts, the merchantilists who want to keep receiving valuable resources for fire nation processing plants and factories to process, the militarists who can avoid having all of the fire nations soldiers shifted to other careers by reforming portions of the army into a new caravan guarding corps as the earth kingdoms now defunct armies go increasingly bandit now that the war is over.
Hmmm now this is actually a plausible long term game plan for the spy. Okay changed my mind on the spy being extra hard mode to just being hard mode(we still need to convince the military and mercantilist to this game plan not to mention will the EK contacts be enough keep up trade relations and stop 7/24 local outrage at seeing (former) fire nation soldiers just marching around in their lands(protecting trade) so soon after unlimited genocide had been put on hold)

on the notion of paperclipping the Dai Li: Not attainable. The Eatth Kingdom will demand their blood for the Peace Treaty and we will be forced to give it to them leaving asides, well, we have a Fire Lord who's inclined to give it to them. We have better things to spend our time on.

Hmm... I dunno about the Dai Li. I think Zuko might be amendable to the idea that redemption is possible for those guys. Especially since the same people that want the Dai Li's head probably ALSO want Azula's. And especially since all that's waiting for them is an execution and Zuko is trying to embrace some kindness. The Dai Li are a skilled asset. If we and/or Zuko put some pressure on keeping them around, they don't really have anyone else to go to. Our enemies within the Fire Nation despise them, the Earth Kingdom despises them.

[] family code reform, where she's taken the controversial position of arguing for the reform of the family code set out by Sozin a century ago. The family code lays down standardized national laws around marriage, divorce, abuse, adoption, and inheritance. The code notably restricts divorce, mandates single-child inheritance, restricts domestic abuse, and bans homosexuality. While it has since come to be lauded by some as a defense of the family, there is a quiet movement for its form; supporting such openly would be controversial, but has the potential to be a somewhat popular move should it succeed.

Okay here's my arguement for this. Probably the two best options for culturally pulling the Fire Nation out of the pit Sozin dug is this and bending revitalization. Bending Revitalization will help pull fire bending away from being literally powered by hate, that's super important. That's also something Zuko can do on his own, he's met the dragons, he's gone back to the roots on fire bending, this is somthing he knows and understands the importance of. Odds are, once we're in a stable situation this is something he will have some thoughts.

While Zuko does understand what it's like to have an unhealthy family, he probably blames that mostly on his horrifically toxic father. He does not understand the single child inheritance clause turns familys into rat races and pushs far to many into the military sheerly out of a desperate need to make something of themselves. He also probably doesn't know anyone who is openly gay. If we want more than token reforms here we need someone who's passionate on the subject.

Zuko doesn't understand how single-child inheritance causes a family to turn into a rat race... with Azula as his sister and Ozai as his dad, the same dad who killed his grandfather (by proxy, it may be) when his uncle was grieving...
As for doesn't know anyone who is openly gay if Ty Lee is straight I will eat my hat.

While I can see Teen Spirit's point perhaps that Zuko will also be working on Bending Revitalization , and having our passion for it might be 'double up', I think having both our character and him be into that actually is a boon. We are probably going to have to convince Zuko of a fair few things he's not going to like, and having a good rapport with him will be vital. Bending Revitalization not just being a political agenda of our faction, but a genuine passion our character feels strongly about will be an excellent way to do that. And I like Zuko, and I'd like our Chancelor and him to actually have a warm relation.

[X] a beautiful young woman, clad in the disconcertingly foreign garb so favored by the socialites and debutantes of the Colonies, though such was not a surprise given the fact that she stood foremost among them. While holding no official title, she was a sufficiently Popular Debutante to have attracted attention even within the home isles, an unusual feat for one so disadvantaged by the nature of their lineage. That alone was not sufficient to warrant her for this position, however; the fact that she'd carried modernist politics to the colonies was far more relevant to their reasons for meeting here tonight. The salons, reading groups, and rallies that she'd played a role in were… numerous, to say the least, and extended to those within the Fire Nation proper, where she was apparently seen as a prime exemplar of their goals. I'd like to have our powerbase in the old colonies as that provides us incentive on top of others not to have them removed during the Harmony Restoration. I'm perfectly fine giving up the new territories and new colonies though. Simply not enough fire benders and creoles there for us to have any legitimate claim. The enclaves in the new colonies can move to the old colonies and I doubt we have any sizable sort of civilian population in the territories at all.

I'm generally for reforming the family code as a partial effort that has unspoken support and doesn't break the bank like public benifits would.

Also I would argue Zuko benifits in this…sorta. If divorce becomes legal then his mother can divorce Ozai and remarry her old boyfriend and her children are also included in inheritance alongside Zuko and Azula. I know that technically Zuko's the Fire Lord and he could just make it happen, but this time he'd have legal precedence. Also having heirs to the throne who have not had a toxic family life/drunk the kool aid.

-[] a wiry woman of middle age, possessing a scholar's frame much similar to his; that wasn't much of a surprise given her role as a Scholar-Bureaucrat in Yu Dao, though he found some satisfaction in the idea that intellectuals might once more find influence in the court, even if they were Colonial. His office had dealt with her in the past, her authority over commerce in Yu Dao having made her a necessary contact for the construction of the air fleet, and the things he'd heard were good for the most part. She had little fear of the new but was not an iconoclast or radical; he was told that the mercantilist faction had fostered a healthy partnership with her over the years, in large part due to her influence over colonial commerce. [Tactful, Diligent, Scholar-Bureaucrat, Mercantilist Inclination. Mid 40s]

We will use Economic excuses to keep the older colonies.

-[] bending revitalization, a movement across both the home isles and the colonies that sought to maintain and restore the knowledge of the traditional forms of fire bending, both those of a ritual and cultural nature. Fire dancing, calligraphy, and sky shows were all major features of the movement's efforts, all of which are arts that were significantly deemphasized in the national academies which have since begun to focus primarily on the combat applications of firebending. This is respected among the traditionalists, though lacks broader appeal outside of those who yearn for the largely lost arts of the Fire Nation's past.

We need to get away from Bending thought Anger to Bending thought Passion.

This might also be useful, for winning Zuko over.

Zuko doesn't understand that is a norm. That it's not just his father but his whole culture that breeds Azula types.

And Does Zuko know Ty Lee is queer?

Also yeah, reform allows Zuko's mom to divorce when she's found.

In a regime of private property that permits inheritance at all, single-child inheritance is the only sort that permits the accumulation of large properties and rationalization of the economy. Splitting-up of property only transfers the rat race from within the household to between households, as smallholders compete among themselves to accumulate enough not to fall into propertylessness and pauperism anyway. That said, marital slavery of women (read: restrictions on divorce) ought to be a greater concern of family code reform in any event.

I just kinda want to double up on passion. Meaning the Popular Debutante combined with restoring the lost bending arts, not only for the interesting synergy on that front but also because it would grant us a support base entirely separate from court politics. We'd have starting connections with all three of the modernists, colonials and traditionalists. Along with the social skills to leverage that support base. For most of our political opponents that actually seems like it'd be a big out of context situation.

Being from the colonial security forces would be my second pick. If only because the military connections would be very handy in what we're going to have to do.

[] public benefit reform, where she'd advocated for the further modernization of Sozin's Prosperity Programs, a wide-ranging package of welfare programs that sought to provide for the health and well-being of the Fire Nation and its people. In recent years, these programs have failed to keep up with modern issues, most notably the labor laws and the national apothecaries. The first is not well fit for the modern needs and risks of the workplace, while the second has failed to integrate modern medicine into treatments. This is a broadly popular position, though one that has the potential to be both expensive and step on toes.
Out of curiosity, what approach does the Code take toward labor organization? I can't imagine it permits free trade unions, but of the remaining policy options, does it aim to suppress labor organization entirely while relying on state aid when the market will not provide wages, or does it create state unions with sole bargaining agent status staffed by state-accountable bureaucrats?

Yeah there's a lot in the Family Code that's just so bad. Sozin, like most Gay Conservatives, just had to spread his misery to everyone it seemed.

Azula is a Minor and our sister. We can say No, she's being dealt with by us and not take too much of a political hit. The Dai Li are traitors to both the Earth Kingdom and Earth King Kuei, the man we must negotiate with to end the war. Insisting on keeping them burns exceptionally valuable Political Capitol for little to no gain.

Azula being a secret Morishita would no doubt be a coup for that family. Unfortunately it is almost certainly not so.
Lol, lmao. But fair as I was about to say: we should focus on whats in character for our person, not specifically what's good for the Nation. I personally want a career diplomat and politician who's well versed in political machinations, the sort who thinks about Benefits and how to make the most efficent system for everyone. But hey, let's roll with what people want.

I'm down for the family reforms, because one strong incentive of single-child inheritance is to either get *new* lands for second-children or never have them at all. And, even in fascist countries, such family restrictions on inheritance are often looked on disfavorably by the common folks, even in regions with traditional single-child inheritance. Cutting off your maiden daughters who care for the elderly parents and your other children entirely from their family supports save for the whims of the heir seems cruel no doubt. Women have been able to serve in the army for many years, but have been unable to share in the benefits of thier service after.

And of course, the theatrical side of the fire kingdom will thank us for this as well
