Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

Hmm, nice of the Shadow Demon to show himself again.

Guess we'll have a chance to get one step closer to wiping the escaped moon-demons out today.

@DragonParadox, given that we knew we were heading into a fight with a large group of Ogres, would it be okay to assume that Mina and Sirim might have adjusted their spell loadouts a bit?

Makes sense that one or both of the Shadow Demons is directing the Ogres to attack Sylestrix. It explains how they even learned of her existence so quickly. I worry that it may be how the Kobolds learned about her as well. That's a problem for later, though.

For now, we have a fight that just got much more complicated by the presence of at least one Shadow Demon. Mina's Daylight spells are great for locking the Demons down, but that also distracts her from CC'ing Ogres. I was counting on her to open the fight with a Web spell. Ogres have piss poor Reflex saves, so it could have easily crippled most of them and given the rest of the party nearly free reign for the opening rounds of the fight.

Sirim, Kori, and Cob are all using their opening actions to inflict a bunch of CC effects. Between Hypnotic Pattern, Burst of Radiance, and Fungal Stun Vial, most if not all of them should be some combination of Fascinated, Blind, Stunned, or Confused for at least a round or two. The Demon's presence escalates this enough to make it worth using a Fungal Stun Vial, IMO. This will hopefully give us enough momentum to deal with the most dangerous threats quickly.

Gorok is our best bet for quickly eliminating the Shadow Demon. It's Incorporeal, so any of his attacks only has a 50% chance of actually affecting it, but Evil Outsiders are one of his Favored Enemies so he gets big bonuses to hit and damage them. Shadow Demons aren't that beefy, so he might be able to take it out fairly quickly, especially if it is crippled by Mina's spell.

I assume Sylestrix is just gonna Dragon all over the boss Ogre. That's fine with me, since it's the greatest physical threat and she will be keeping it occupied while serving as a distraction and target for the other Ogres. It would have been best if she was able to hit a bunch of them with her breath weapon first before they knew we were here, but it seems like she's going straight for melee and that might be for the best. Better to keep the rest of the party from being targeted.

Approaching the Ogre camp with everyone except Sylestrix Invisible means that we should be able to surprise them pretty thoroughly. Hopefully it means they will be fairly tightly grouped and subject to multiple CC effects before they can split up.

[X] Surprise!
-[X] Preparation prior to setting out with Sylestrix:
--[X] Mina prepares two extra Hermean Potential spells in place of Ear-Piercing Scream and Sleep, an extra Invisibility spell in place of Glitterdust, and an extra Heroism spell in place of Dispel Magic.
--[X] Sirim prepares a Ray of Enfeeblement spell in place of Silent Image, and an extra Invisibility spell in place of Darkness.
--[X] Gorok keeps an Ant Haul spell prepared for the return trip, but also prepares a Lead Blades spell.
-[X] Pre-Fight Buffs:
--[X] Mina casts See Invisibility and Mage Armor on herself, Hermean Potential on Sylestrix, Hermean Potential and Heroism on Cob and Gorok, and Invisibility on herself and Cob.
--[X] Sirim casts Shield, Mage Armor, and Mirror Image on himself, Invisibility on himself and Gorok, Magic Circle Against Evil on himself, and Haste on the entire party.
--[X] Kori activates his Cloak of Darkness Revelation, casts Protection from Evil on Sylestrix, Cob, Gorok, and himself, Divine Favor on himself, Bless on everyone, Invisibility on himself, and Channel Vigor on himself with it set to the Spirit effect for now.
--[X] Gorok casts Lead Blades on his sword.
-[X] Fight:
--[X] The Ogres will respond very differently when they expect a lone Dragon when the fight starts, only to discover she brought an entire group of Invisible adventurers to the party.
---[X] Mina casts Daylight. If a Shadow Demon Dispels it, she immediately moves to cast another Daylight spell. If it it not Dispelled, her next move is instead to cast a Web spell to capture as many Ogres as possible. She is careful to avoid affecting allies, and instead uses Glitterdust from her staff if the Web spell would hit them.
---[X] Sirim targets the lesser Ogres with an Hypnotic Pattern spell. He next moves to target one of the lead Ogres with a Ray of Enfeeblement spell, choosing whichever seems most dangerous at the time, unless an Ogre approaches his position, in which case he targets them with a Color Spray spell Throughout the fight, he remains close to Mina to make certain she is protected by his Magic Circle.
---[X] Kori targets the Ogres with a Burst of Radiance spell, aiming to affect both apparent leaders if possible, or the boss and nearby subordinates if the leaders are too far apart. His next spell is another Burst of Radiance, again aiming to Blind as many Ogres as possible, especially any that get close to his position.
---[X] Cob uses the Launcher to shoot a Fungal Stun Vial into the group of Ogres, attempting to affect as many as possible. Afterward, he uses the Gem of Foe's Pyre to Summon a large fire elemental to attack the lead Ogre which Sylestrix isn't already fighting. Afterwards, he closes to melee with the Ogres, Sneak Attacking when possible, using Debilitating Injury to Disorient targets (-2 penalty to attack bonus, or -4 vs Cob).
---[X] Sirim, Kori, and Cob all try not to overlap their attacks if the Ogres are spread too far apart, but if they are bunched up tightly, they pile them on for maximum effect.
---[X] Gorok focus on the Shadow Demon, either Power Attacking it with his sword if it is within melee range or Deadly Aim with his bow if it is out of reach.
---[X] Sylestrix targets the boss Ogre.

Completely unrelated, but can Bestow Insight be cast on self?

Follow-up, can one cast Bestow Insight a skill on person A (they are normally untrained in the skill), and then person A qualify to cast Bestow Insight on someone else? Can that 'someone else' be the first caster?

Edit: I do think that with PfEs up, we might be safe enough for Mina to open with a Web and is ready to react with Daylight on following turns.

My reasoning lies in the fact that Daylight replaces Deeper Darkness, and DD replaces Daylight, so the best time to cast Daylight is directly after a Shadow Demon uses their ability, if we are lucky with the initiative order.

This is Pathfinder, not 3.5.

Gorok would reliably deal 50% damage, instead of missing half the time, if I remember correctly.

That is now how it works in Pathfinder, instead of a 50% chance to do full damage you just do half damage with every hit. Over a long enough time it comes out to the same thing, but it's more consistent.

Edit: Cob'd ;)

No, you need actual proper skill points ('have one rank in'), Bestow Insight does not let you qualify for itself.

That was my read of the spell, but.... man. I had to ask.

But, just to be clear, can once cast it on themselves?
The name wouldn't make me think so, but the description just says "the target", and I've always taken 'one creature touched' to also include 'caster' as a possible target.

Oh yeah sure, anything with a range of touch can be cast on self or others unless it does not make sense for some other reason. Like you can't cast 'shield other' and designate the other as yourself , but apart from that you're golden.

:D :D :D
Look, if this goes really really well, I want to ask to look at the Mind-Core, on the promise of sharing what we learn. I don't even want to have it. I'm still just intensely curious.

Fortune
Hermean Potential
Bestow Insight

That's three re-rolls, putting aside whatever buffs we get from various spells (including Shadow Enchantment) to Lore checks

Lore (Azlanti History): 9 + 1 (INT) = 10

Edit: Actually, @DragonParadox is there anything stopping Pepper from using his Figment-Eidolon ability to get a +8 to lore/knowledge skills like Lore; Alzanti History or Knowledge; Psionics?

The Shadow Demon can do a lot of stuff to mess with us if we don't move to lock it down ASAP.

We need to act before it can, which we will be able to do because Invisibility means it won't know we're even there in time to respond. It should effectively be a Surprise round for the purpose of our actions in relation to the Demon.

If we delay, the Demon could cast Deeper Darkness, which screws with everyone except for Kori, or use one of its other SLAs before the next round when it's Mina's turn again. Web on the Ogres would be nice, but they're still getting hit with a bunch of other CC effects.

*thinks about it* That's clever.

He can access all skills that anyone who ever dreamed had and that includes those ones.
Ok.
So we missed a trick when it came poking to the stove, though I would like to point out that I don't think we actually learned about it, just had it awaken Cob's psionic potential.

Sage's Knowledge (Ex)

A sage stores information on every topic and is happy to lecture its master on the finer points of a subject. A sage can attempt all Knowledge checks untrained and gains a bonus on Knowledge checks equal to half its master's class level. Additionally, a sage gains 2 skill ranks each time its master gains a class level. Its maximum number of ranks in any given skill is equal to its master's class level.

This replaces alertness and the familiar's ability to share its master's skill ranks.

1. When it comes to planned Alzanti lore checks, I'd like for him to Aid Another to Kori.
With a +8 racial, and 10 INT (should be 11 as Mina is level 6) and +3 from Mina being level 6, he should autopass the DC 10 check to Aid Another.
Does that read as sensible/within rules as intended?

2. When we get the time in the narrative, I'd like to do a maximum-buffed Pepper do a poking session on all the psionic items; Reroll order: Hermean Potential, then Fortune.
And we stop for the day as soon as Fortune is used on him, so he has max rerolls available for each item.

Would that be ok?

(Can Pepper drink tea? After Kori uses the Insight Leaves to try again on the Mind Core (if we get an agreement on that), we'll still have one dose left, so that'd be another try on a failed identification check, with a +2 alchemical bonus).
----
I do think that if Pepper knew he could help, he'd have spoken up.

So as a suggestion for a loose justification of Pepper not speaking up; how about him previously not having any knowledge of psionics at all to use as a 'jumping off point' to find it in dreams, but seeing Cob's awakening was enough for him to target the relevant dreams.

Second justification: And now Pepper is practiced at 'jumping off' he can now do that from much smaller bits of context/information, so he doesn't need anything big like Cob's awaking in the future.

And none of this was because we all forgot that he can just choose to have a +8 racial bonus to literally any skill, and can change that skill once after each time Mina takes a long rest, and a second time at any point in the day as a full round action.
At 3rd level, a figment is shaped by its master's dreams. Each time the master awakens from a full night's rest, he can apply to the figment 1 evolution point's worth of eidolon evolutions that don't have a base form requirement. At 7th level, he can apply 2 points' worth of eidolon evolutions; at 13th level, he can apply 3 points' worth of eidolon evolutions.
Benefit(s): Once per day, your familiar can spend a full-round action to manually reshape itself, reassigning 1 evolution point of eidolon evolutions. The evolution it loses can't be a prerequisite for any other evolutions it has.

It can use this ability twice per day at 7th level, and three times per day at 13th level.

I'm just glad our dragon ally is willing to work with us and not charge ahead, and shadow demon explains why ogres showed up so suddenly. It wants payback and using them to get it, thinking dragon is now alone and hurt, but we messed that up.

[X] Goldfish

Plan covers everything alright, but... @Goldfish could we not use Fire Elemental gem? Maybe summon it to attack shadow demon or one of of important looking/magic using ogres?

It would be fairly useless against the Demons, since they have Fire Resistance. Could be helpful against the Ogres, though. The first couple rounds of the fight are more about hittin the Ogres as hard and fast as we can with multiple effects to keep them disorganized and discombobulated. No one really has actions to spare on using the gem, except for maybe Cob after he uses the stun vial.

Y'all think we should have Cob six the Fire Elemental on one of the leaders before he gets stabby?

I forgot about the gem, and the summon is a disposable 60hp of a distraction. Also, summoning it won't break invisibility. One thing is that we'll want to keep it away from our web spells, so it should be targeted away from/to the edge of where the most effective place for a web spell would be.

The question is, who'd be best using their action to send it out.

Oh. Oh I have an idea.
Can Pepper (with a +8 to Stealth (or maybe +8 perception so he can keep an eye out for surprises)) activate the Gem of Foe's Pyre against one of the Ogres? (Mina using slumber on herself to summon Pepper if need be)
Due to the elemental wanting to consume the target, I think it should be one of the generic Ogres that probably doesn't have the best loot in the band. Note the limit of only attacking the designated target but I only want it as a distracting HP bag
In addition, when we used it against the Cheliax ship, there wasn't any mention of range, so I think it's anywhere line of sight?
Summon it to attack the moon!
Pried from the work of ancient dwarf artisanship this gem once had the power to summon a large fire elemental to protect the hold in which it had been forged. Through crude enchantments best left unmentioned the gemstone can still summon this protector, but filled with loss and rage. The elemental may only attack one target against which it is directed on conjuring which it must be allowed to consume utterly or else it will turn on the summoner with its full ferocity until destroyed. If it is instead destroyed it returns to the stone quiescent (1/day)

Pepperrrr to the rescue!
