Punching through the Masquerade (Modern Magical Cultivation Quest)

Didn't plan to enslave any spirits and being upfront in bargains isn't too bad. We can still haggle and bargain, just can't force.

Right, we're not not taking the Oath, right? We're just seeing if it's something he'd be interested in?

basically, it would be "I'm making the oath, but would you be interested in the fire based shiny?" Summary negotiation would follow assuming Phlecket wants it in the first place.

[X] Offer an Ember: If a single Ember was enough to give Lord Typhon some measure of wiggle room from his divinely forged chains, what might an Elemental spirit do with it? And what would he offer in return?

Well then...

Hmmm. That's a tad more tempting. On the other hand, we do likely need our Embers for the upcoming threat. I am ambivalent.

EDIT: I think a lot of people are still thinking the trade doesn't involve the Oath, so I'll throw my vote in the direction of compensating for that misunderstanding.

If we get a shot at doing Whatever Fun Shit is apparently on the table if we can generate some Motes of Dust to temper with, that could very well help us a lot.

That being said, I'm surprised that our Ember capacity is Black Bile x5 +3 per Tablet, we really have been operating on a shoestring budget until now, huh?

I suspect it's actually Lowest Stat x5 +3 per tablet, not specifically Black Bile. That would make more sense, IMO.

No, Ember Capacity is based off of your Black Bile stat. Each of the Elemental Cultivation materials have a maximum holding capacity based off of another stat. Frankly Embers are the most straightforward, which is why that was one of the starting options.

Hmm, neat, is there anything special about Embers in particular from our reactions? Or just how we generate them?

It's not risking messing anything up; we're just paying a bit more for a mystery box.

Beyond the fact that they're impossible orbs of fire you can hold in your hands without burning them? Impossible to tell without another Cultivation material to compare them too. Purified earth is the best way to keep such motes of flame, as water would drown them, loose earth would dampen the sparks and air might snuff them out. and where else would one find purer earth then in the soil of their soul? The spark comes from the soul's fire once the soul has been exposed to such things as the fires of divinity, but it is in Earth that the flame can be kindled and held close. Other cultivation materials have similar reasoning pinning down why the other stats serve as the vessel for how many you can hold.

Unfortunately my desperate attempts at trying to sleep at night instead of during the day are leaving my mind scattered and fey like, so you're not getting clearer information from me then that. Should probably write all my lore/information posts like this for maximum frustration and confusion before you have the opportunity to pin down hard facts from experimentation.

I solemnly swear not to be a douchebag.

We are a special snowflake, so lean into it.

If he's got insight on how we can gather the other Elemental Fragments, that could be extremely useful. Especially with the Implications that Motes of Dust + Our Handicapped trait can potentially do some Fun Jailbreaking nonsense.

"I've done some divining, and as far as I can tell is that it's old and that it's aligned with death and winter. The fact something like this is even in the area in the first place when the Summer Solstice is only a few weeks away is deeply worrying. Usually seasonal spirits tend to be dormant or at least passive when it's nearly the opposite side of the wheel from when they're active." Mabel said as she started rifling through the chest, pulling out a disparate assortment of objects you were too distracted to recognize. " Unfortunately we won't know anything more unless someone is attacked and survives or until unusual corpses start turning up. I'm friends with a death witch who works at the morgue and have contacts with every major practioner group in town. As soon as I'm sure what it is, I'll text you the details to any protection or banishing rituals we have for whatever sort of winter gremlin has popped up. Till then. I highly suggest you stay home and out of sight, maybe tone down any rituals you might be doing this month if you aren't sure of your own protections."
(Learned that Mabel likes you enough to prefer you alive.)
Mabel is pretty cool and her offering that advice was nice of her.

Perhaps it was fitting that you were here to re-forge yourself. You gathered the three Embers and focused them within your spine, which in the ethereal view you had was a sorry mess of cracked and chipped bone. As you began to focus on intensifying the heat, your body began to scream in pain, your spine igniting within you as it was turned semi-molten by the focused Embers. You nearly lost your grasp on Embers, but the spirits you had enlisted as allies came to your aid. The Gnome braced your spine in position as the heat intensified, the Salamander lending its own heat to the forge your body had become, and the Daimon whispered in your ear secrets you couldn't quite remember even as you adjusted the Burning Embers within your Sublime Body according to it's suggestions.

As the chips and cracks in your spine smoothed out and became whole, you felt something on the edges of your incredibly narrow focus, sparring a moment's attention, you noticed that the surrounding bones were, at the points closest to the spine, began to reshape themselves in accordance with your magically assisted will. Perhaps if you could acquire more spiritual aid or magical puissance, you could speed the repairing of your body.

(Your spine has been Tempered, this has effects beyond the obvious, which you will discover as you expand your mystical knowledge. Your natural Brazier has expanded by five points, now 5/13. Your increased fortitude has brought you up to the level of health a person with 1 Black Bile should have.)

(Tempering the body option has been updated, rolling high enough on Tempering the Body may allow you to skip steps in Tempering the Body based on which bones you're focusing on. (Gated DC based on relative damage to the bones, understandably your legs will have the highest DC.))
Body Tempering is really great and is something the MC is bound to be ecstatic about it given her difficulties due to her injuries.

"I'd say so, most Practioners don't summon Typhon by accident and survive the process. Yes I'm aware of that." Phlecket said in response to the look of shock that crossed your face at that. "I've got a few Daimons in Typhon's court that were quite happy to talk about the human who loosened their master's chains enough to act. You've upset the long war merely by existing. Take comfort in that even should you not survive the reprisal. Typhon will ensure your soul goes before Lord Hades rather then Saint Peter for an actually fair accounting of your life's struggles. You've earned that in his eyes."
Makes sense that even helping Typhon accidentally would screw over her afterlife.

Effectively. Just remember that your word is your bond and you can't go far wrong. As far as the magic side of things. You've completed the rite, so long as you give the ritual oath to Phlecket the investiture will be complete, you'll gain a smattering of benefits related to spirits as your Meme changes a wee bit and you'll have achieved a notable milestone for mortal magic users. It's only a step past the first milestone, but hey, thats more then the average dweeb with a spellbook does.

As for trading, you'll only find out if you make the offer. Regardless of whether or not you take any trades, you'll still complete the rite and we can move on to the next step.

Vote's open btw.

The oath seems okay since not being an asshole to spirits shouldn't be to hard.
